It was kind of funny how Mayuri was talking to Ashisogijizo expecting it to answer to him (or maybe not). However, it would have been funnier if Ashisogijizo had actually answered Mayuri with this deep male voice. Just to see Mayuri scoffing and contemplating he hadn't put such a function into Ashisogijizo. Today's episode's theme seemed to be unexpected growth. At least in the eyes of Mayuri.
It was nice we learned more about Nemu or should I call her Nemuri no. 7? I feel like the reason why Mayuri settled to call her 'Nemu' was due to the fact Nemu survived beyond his expectations and continued to grow, so he wasn't anymore dreaming. (As for those who don't know, "nemuri" means sleep.) Though, ironically Nemu felt no. 7 was her true name, instead of Nemu. But I suppose in the end she accepted it. At least after her talk with Akon. This made me think Akon acted a bit like a surrogate father to Nemu which was super sweet!
Also, as a side note, it seemed Nemu had a rather sweet childhood even though she was obviously growing up in a laboratory, but even so. She seemed to grow in a pretty good environment (she had toys and all other things a child would need and I bet she was watched over 24/7). Which lead to me ponder did Nemu's 'growth' cease at some point? Because if we compare her adulthood to her childhood the way she was mostly treated in her adulthood was abusive. It felt like Nemu was this genius child, but once she hit puberty/adulthood she became 'normal' and thus a disappointment to Mayuri. which led to Mayuri behaving the way he did toward Nemu. But once she showed once again signs of 'growth' he seemed amazed and almost sad Nemu went and sacrificed herself for his sake. Write about a very complex father-daughter relationship! Because Mayuri was Nemu's father in a sense, even I bet Mayuri would rather gouge his eyes out than admit that.
In that sense, Nemu was the perfect opponent against Pernida when came to defeating him. If not Nemu, I'm quite sure Mayuri would have had a much harder time defeating him as Mayuri mostly ended up being amazed by everyone's growth and in Nemu's case her 'perfection'! Luckily ghost of Szayelaporro came to the rescue which in itself was very ironic. But it was enough to snap Mayuri out of his frozen state and pocket Nemu's brain. Without him doing that...Pernida would have evolved even more. It made me wonder if Pernida had managed to devour Nemu fully, would he have become more human-like? Well, no matter what, I'm sure Nemuri no. 7's brain will be put to good use. (Not to spoil anything, but manga readers can surely agree on this, hm?)
Oh, it was a neat detail it showed how Toshiro and Rangiku got shipped to the battlefield, because as far as I can remember in the manga Toshiro just randomly appeared at one point. My memory of this point of manga is very shaky because this whole Mayuri and Nemu part took an extremely long time to be explained and covered, which goes to show Kubo's favorites... I wonder if Mayuri will combust when he learns about Ururu? Because I'm very sure he will at some point or another go to Kisuke and gloat about Nemu and I wouldn't put it past to Kisuke to slyly mention Ururu and the fact, 'oh yeah, I too created an artificial soul that can evolve'. But while Mayuri clearly geared toward a more shinigami-like existence, Kisuke geared toward more a human-like existence. It makes one wonder...which one is nearer to that 'perfection' that Mayuri was seeking? As Ururu will obviously grow faster and quicker older than Nemu would have.
Random side note, Ikkaku and Yumichika thanking Mayuri, and also Toshiro thanking him was nice. Yet at the same time somewhat bizarre, considering everything that Mayuri has done in the past. But like Mayuri basically pointed out...beggars can't be choosers.
It seems Mayuri wasn't the only one who came with 'luggage' to Wahrwelt as Giselle had brought her girl friends! And good thing she had, because those foot soldiers seemed to be tough ones to defeat with Yhwach's eye power in those. I wonder if those are part of Yhwach himself or his power's manifestations or what? In the manga those didn't appear, so this is all new to everybody!
Looks like the next episode will be about Kyoraku and Nanao, based on the ending "poem" card. The one who talked was Nanao and the next episode's title hinted at Kyoraku. Not going to manga spoilers, but those who have read the manga will know the next episode will more than likely focus fully on Kyoraku and Nanao, just like this episode focused mainly on Mayuri and Nemu. Which begs the question...whose fights the last two episodes (since I assume this cour will be 13 episodes and more than likely the last two episodes will air on the same day just like last time) will feature? Because there will be one last cour and hopefully this cour will also end up with a big bang, like last time. |
