Doraemon (1973) is lost. It was burned in a fire decades ago and wasn't saved so it's impossible to watch. Sad stuff

The JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood movie from 2007 is still pretty much lost media despite a few clips being managed to be found, with some uploaded unto YouTube. Making it partially lost-and-found.

The movie was apparently so bad that the movie wasn’t released into home DVD lmao. Can’t really blame ‘em. They removed Speedwagon of all people AND didn’t follow most of the original manga. Though, it is interesting that the JoJo fandom is still trying to recover this piece of JoJo history. Would still give it a chance to watch it if it ever gets fully found or re-released.

There are a few anime like that. I believe Viewtiful Joe never got a DVD release in Japan. I've only been able to watch the 1st half because that's what was dubbed into English. I heard the whole thing got a Spanish dub, but I have no idea how to go about watching it.

Yeah, it’s definitely aired but was taken away right after, so it can still be found.

This movie it was made as like a short video you'd watch in a museum, but I've scoured the internet for a recording, and couldn't find a thing.

It only aired in japan so the unaired dub versions are lost media.

There are also some early TV anime which have just had episodes lost due to poor storage/archiving. Big X (1964) is one example—I believe almost all of the first forty or so episodes are lost.

I don't really know. I'm simply unable to find the show with Japanese audio, and somebody left a comment somewhere explaining that there are no DVDs.

Ouch, guess that might be an impossible find for a while unless something from it comes up in like the next decade or so. Or maybe not at all.

The Maze movie is in a similar situation to the JJBA movie -- it never had a home video release, so unless you saw it in the theaters in Japan back in 1998, you're out of luck. I don't know if it never got a home release because of poor reception, or if the materials got lost/destroyed. It wouldn't be the first time with that franchise, as the masters for the uncensored/home-video version of the TV series apparently got lost sometime before the 2001 US DVD release, which used the censored/TV version. At least the uncensored version does exist, via the Japanese VHS and laserdisc releases.

A lot of older anime, sadly.

Doraemon '73 is one.

For something more recent, I will never get over the travesty of Anime Tenchou x Touhou Project being lost. I fucking love Touhou and I always enjoyed Anime Tenchou. For 10 and a half years, since November 2010, this crossover short film has been lost. It was made by ufotable.

Here is the trailer.

I've always wanted a full-length Touhou anime... even if it was mainly a comedy anime with some small, more serious arcs in-between, I just love the world and characters of Touhou so much that it would easily become one of my favorite anime of all time... but maybe it's not meant to be, and I already know why.

There was an episode of Ghost Stories that never aired because of complaints about it's content. Also although it was found eventually, there was also the Harmony Gold dub of Dragon Ball.

Two of my favorite series, Touhou Project and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure both have lost anime media. Feels bad man.

Touhou had a crossover short with Anime Tenchou. I believe the short had input from ZUN making it the only official Touhou anime but I'm not sure. Can't find any good source of information about it.

JoJo had an entire movie go missing. An attempt at adapting the first part, Phantom Blood, into a feature-length film. There are various accounts of changes made for the film but without proof I don't really believe any of them.
The film was presumably never released on home video because the studio that made it, A.P.P.P, lost the rights to the JoJo property during it's theatrical run due to a controversy involving their earlier JoJo OVAs based on Stardust Crusaders.

Also, last I heard, the Icelandic version of the first Pokémon OP is still partially lost. Everything from before the singer in the English version would say "to train them is my cause" can't be found online as far as I'm aware. I've searched all over Google looking for it. Searched in both English and Icelandic.

Saki-san Obashi/Saki Sanobashi is also an allegedly lost anime (possibly hentai), although someone claiming to be the person who started the rumor about its existence later said that they just made it up. Supposedly it was about some girls locked in a bathroom before they went insane and started killing each other I believe? Personally I think it was just a creepypasta

As someone who has tried to add all the Pokémon entries to his list, I can tell you about two lost entries:

Pokemon 3D Adventure: Mew wo Sagase! and its sequel Pokemon 3D Adventure 2: Pikachu no Kaitei Daibouken. The first was aired at the temporary PokéPark amusement park in Nagoya, Japan in 2005 and the second had a limited theater run in both Japan and the USA. While there have been reports on their airing after, they're still not available anywhere online or any physical release.

ALL YOUR pictures taken on that flip mobile in 2006.

It is interesting how in future, people will have old family pictures from 20th century, but none from 21th.

And now with the popularity of streaming, the amount of lost media of every kind (movies, series, anime) just will be increasing in future.

Magical Suite Prism Nana is partially lost.

Tsubu Doll is completely lost not to mention unaired.

Almost all traces of Robo Crosser is lost

Quite a few anime from before the mid 70's that weren't super notable back then are at least partially lost.

There are several anime that were only available on phones that are partially or completely lost, Golden Kids is one of them.

A lot of older series and especially ones aimed at children/younger audiences.

Many were never subbed or only have a few episodes subbed in English or other languages, which is one thing if the raws were readily available and you could then watch them if you understand the Japanese or they could at least be theoretically available for subbing at a later date (most likely by fansubbers).

But when you go about trying to find the raws, that too often proves futile.

I'm still searching for the entirety of series like Maple Town Monogatari and Konchuu Monogatari Minashigo Hutch.

There was supposed to be a Ninja Scroll 2, planned to release in 2014 or so, but got cancelled

Satoshi Kon's Dreaming Machine, which is in limbo currently, as only 1/3 of it was animated before he passed due to cancer, and the industry couldn't find another director as talented as he is.

The 5 Killers, from Studio Gonzo, would have been one hell of anime, something like Black Lagoon, Noir, Requiem or Darker than Black

Yeah, but the thing is Shoujo Tsubaki was HEAVILY censored, apparently the censors were so shocked that they forced the lone producer to make several cuts, with said "vile" content now being lost forever.

It's the same as the movie Freaks (1931), which was heavily cut to appease the censors. Both Freaks and Midori are considered "lost media" because they have good chunks missing.

I’m bored so here’s some lesser known ones

Ranpou: an anime from 1984 that was missing for nearly 40 years until it was found and released on Blu-ray in 2021. Highly recommend listening to the opening and ending, they’re both peak 80s

Golgo 13 (1971): a lesser known adaptation of golgo 13, it used mostly cut out animation and out of the 130 episodes made, only 22 aired. For over 50 years no one knew it existed until they found the master tapes and aired the show on tv, I think it’s online idk

Mon Cheri coco: a 1970s Shojo anime based on a manga of the same name. 13 episodes were aired and had reruns until the 90s, but not a single episode has been uploaded online. People have claimed and showed vhs recordings they have of the show and with new clips being uploaded, I’m sure we’ll find the show soon

Sobakasu Pucchi and pinch to punch: including both shows here since they’re made by the same person. SP is from 1969 and PTP is from 1970, both series are completely lost with only a frame of both surviving

Itazura tenshi chippo chan: Ngl I couldn’t find any info on this show in English, so I looked it up in Japanese and found a little more. The show is from 1970 and only two frames still survive, but one I only found looking up the Japanese name, so it’s most likely gone forever

Pink lady monogatari: based on the pop duo pink lady, it’s a 1978 anime and only the opening survives, the show never released on home media due to copyright and it most likely never will

All those traffic safety shorts: there were a ton of traffic safety shorts made, some based on anime, that were only shown at schools and are no where online. Some are so obscure we don’t even know if the masters would still exist. I read about one earlier from the early 70s that basically guilt tripped kids into following traffic laws or else they would die, kinda dark, and there’s one for the 1970s Moomin I couldn’t find much on, heck we don’t even know when it was made! There’s also that Mario one which seems to be the most well known, and while there is a copy of it, it’s not able to be uploaded online, only being shown to schools in Japan, there was also a fire safety Mario one which I believe isn’t online either, but idk

Castle in the sky alternative ending: more of an existence unconfirmed, but basically there was a rumor of a supposed alternate ending for the movie, and since it airs every year in Japan, people are starting to believe it was included in an early broadcast, and though ghibli has confirmed it’s fake, some people don’t believe them. Heck, someone’s willing to pay $500 if you can find the ending, and $700 if you can find the original broadcast with ads and everything. Some of the original broadcasts are lost and some believe the ending is in one of them. I love this movie and I told my friend about it and they think it just ends with a dance party and Muska getting arrested, which would be really funny

Space alien pipi: alright last one for now, but this was a 1960s anime (noticing a pattern?) that was both animated and live actions, only two episodes survive and they were both uploaded online at some point, but aren’t available anymore, it’s likely the rest of the show is gone forever.

Yeah old anime weren’t preserved very well and a ton of them are gone. Its unfortunate, but oh well, there’s nothing we can do about it

Not technically lost anime I know of, but alternate versions of them that were known to exist in some form:
-Streamline Pictures English dubs for Kiki's Delivery Service and Laputa: Castle in the Sky.
-English dub for Gurren Lagann's first several episodes when ADV Films briefly had rights to it.
-The 2000s Toonami edited version of Outlaw Star. Nearly all the episodes of this version are found, but the first half of episode 17 remains lost.
-The Fox Kids version of Escaflowne. A few of the episodes for it are still lost.

I think a distinction should be made, because some of the entries you guys mention are much likely not lost, just unaired and/or shelved, either because they never left past the Japanese market or were held at private or limited screenings. This is a common case for all sort of media and doesn't mean it's lost, since it's assumed copies are preserved somewhere, be in the studio, in a museum or in a repository.
