Jesus Christ, the machines just can't catch a break in this show. First their village destroyed but now some sort of infection...?

However, I also think this was an interesting episode showing how the resistance camps has been operating. In the game, there's character dialogues, lore, etc so it's nice to see some segments in the show, even if they seem very different. Machine trauma and tragedies continue damn

This took a massive turn from the game. Not in a bad way though. This felt very interesting to see how it would adapt the true end of Pascal’s village and now it is time for our journey towards the endgame. Hope everyone is ready.

Almost everyone is dead! Except Devola , Popola , A2, 9S.

For the better or worse, Lily let the kids to be dealt by Pascal. Which is nice?

The last few episode made me think that in the Nier Automata world, feels the best is to be a Pod.

In that conversation between 042 and 153, 153 withhold the important part that 9S repeatedly is saying that he will kill A2.

A-1 you’ve delivered a masterpiece yet again. Absolutely heartbreaking episode that is a testament to the job A-1 have done bringing these characters to life, especially Lily and the resistance.

It’s crazy how quickly the logic virus can spread throughout a population and wipe everyone out, we were just seeing Lily and the others laughing and planning their next steps and within a few moments they’re all gone. People you’ve fought side by side with for years.

Even more heartbreaking when you remember the similarities between this and the A2 flashback episode. Twice now A-2 has had to kill the people closest to her. In the end, Lily went out with a smile on her face and should be remembered as always being a bright spot in a bleak world. ❀️

Speaking of bright spots, 9s hearing 2B’s voice memo and her describing her time with him as memories of light was also gut wrenching.

Pascal discovering the kids who had been infected in the shipping container and self destructing with them was such a sad scene man. I’m sure in that last moment he felt a sense of personal responsibility for how things turned out with the resistance because of members from his village .. they all deserved better. This world is so cruel.

We’re in the endgame now, A-1 I have full faith πŸ™πŸΎ oh yea and it was nice to see Devola and Popola get thanked by Lily as well for all their years of service

Pascal really went all-out at the start there. The CGI fight scene was... actually pretty good? You can obviously tell it's CGI but it doesn't look as awful as CGI in other anime. Did they finally figure out how to make decent CGI scenes? I suppose it's easier since the CGI models are machines but still. I remember reading that Season 1 of NieR Automata directly took assets from the actual game to use in the anime which didn't look very good. Did they make new models or polish the existing ones? Either way, they didn't look too bad. Or my tolerance for crappy CGI has increased.

Man, this was such a hard-hitting episode. The first part seems like it's adapting from a book or a manga once again cause I don't remember seeing that happen in the game. At least not in that way. Even though we didn't really spend THAT much time with the resistance members their deaths still hit hard. And then there was the scene with Pascal... My boy didn't deserve this... ;-;

I am glad that Devola and Popola were able to survive at least. Since they were programmed to feel misery and regret 24/7 for the failure of their predecessors, it was very nice to see them finally get some praise. They deserve it so much.

9S found a message from 2B after discovering her flight unit. It felt good hearing her voice again but again... the message made me so sad.

Only 3 episodes remain. Can't believe we're so close to the finale. Season 2 has been great so far so I'm sure they'll do the ending justice. Can't wait.

Anime-only here, I think the message I get is that, this war has zero human involved, but human still continued to be used as an excuse or reason to continue this senseless war by robots who idolized/villainized human. This might be a metaphor to the religious war in the past where human use God as an excuse to start a war, even though God can only know if there's really God or not. Some might even go further by saying that even some wars that still ongoing today (I won't say which one) are stem from religious cause.

For the criticism, the anime lacks the feeling of "hurry" and despair the game has, especially when it used too much bravado and jokes from Pascal in order to fool the viewers that Pascal and children will be fine (WRONG!). I'm also disappointed that A2 didn't watch how the children ended with Pascal, but overall the scene was sadder, albeit still less shocking.

Overall, an 8/10 episode.

Seems like they repurposed the cannibal machines (which are what destroys both the village and the resistance camp in the game) as the end of the children.
Guess that representing a mass suicide with "children" is too much for an anime airing on TV so they made this concesion.

Tower is open and ready to receive our androids.
Since some of the biggest revelations were already semi-portrayed with the premature appeareance of the girl in red, I guess we won't get as much of a kick with 9S learning that many things at all.
Hope the double boss-fight while ascending to the end of the tower is as hype as in the game. They made justice to the section controlling Pascal so I have hopes.

Question for those who played now that Pascal's end has been adapted, which one did you choose in your playthrough?

That was the worst way things could have ended, it's really sad how all of A2's actions were for nothing in the end. Helping Pascal's village only resulted in everyone dying. Seeing what happened to the children was really grim. I wonder how things will go from here, it feels like A2 and 9S are the only two left (and the ones controlling that tower) and I'm assuming the finale will have them fight like in the OP

Goddamnit. The way things were changed up earlier I thought they might give Pascal a better ending than in the game, but they just took a different route to make it even worse.

It's equal opportunity though, since everyone else is suffering even more too.

Oh! But Devola and Popola got out of the camp alive, that's a plus! ... Right? Yeah no, not looking forward to how they're going to get merced in the anime.

Frustrating how rushed this episode was...
I really feel like that ending with the pods did a diservice to the story that we witnessed. I mean, shit...pascal, the children, lily, jackass, and the other androids all died in one frickin episode and then they pull that shit with the pods speed running what we saw and it doesn't do it justice. I'm sorry I might be the only one, but it was totally unnecessary and felt like telling a joke at a funeral.

My emotional stability is just as bad, if not worse, than 9S's after watching this episode.

Only A2 and 9S remain, and they seem to be heading towards some kind of confrontation. And also Devola and Popola, who haven't been given much context, but have also suffered greatly. All of these massacres are horrible and tragic, with Lily and Pascal's deaths being the most painful. With so few episodes left, all my hopes for a comforting ending have vanished, to the point where I don't even want to play the video game to avoid experiencing the same pain of loss.

The power of mother pascal sure was amazing. Its also good that we got to see how the rampage virus started too. But damm that was a harsh lesson for Lily and her men. 2b's final message for 9s though really was quite emotional. The children scene though was ghastly. RIP Pascal and Lily. Lily and her men sure went out with a bang.

Apart from Pascal boasting about his win against the goliath lifeform, this episode truly settles in when it comes to despair and loss.

Rescuing the lifeform children sadly became the very thing that unleashed the virus that wiped out everyone at the resistance camp. Devola and Popola got out just in time under Lily's orders, but her whole group was killed off. I like Lily a lot, of seeing her reach her end and having A2 to put her out of her misery was a really sad moment. =(

To add to the growing mount of sadness, Pascal discovered only one lifeform child alive after killing all of the others, It then bit into Pascal and they both died via self-destruction. Even the segment with 9S as he dealt with the final sub-unit was filled with sadness as he heard 2B's final message play out from her surviving flight unit. It's disheartening to see him pushing further down the road of pure hatred, where nothing can stop him whatsoever.

Now that the tower is open, so we're approaching the endgame segment. Some of my favourite parts of this game reside here, so I do look forward to seeing how this will be adapted.

@StateofOhayo The pods segment is no longer part of the puppet play but something that comes from the game and should have been implemented way before the did.
This scenes play each time you finish an act of route C, which means clearing part of 9S story and A2 story.
For 9S, this is after each tower and for A2 is her backstory, the village destruction, engels fight controlling Pascal and the third tower where both meet at the boss room.

After each segment the pods will talk, not about a summary of the chapter (this is skipped faster than this scene) but as setting the course of action and what things to take account to, like both agreeing at first that they need to reroute A2/9S itineraries in a subtle way so they won't cross paths for 9S mental stability.

But a lot of things have changed, so we are now ~80% in anime original territory.

Edit: also to mention, this pod talks are key for Ending E, which was the happiest ending and is a pod exchange that triggers it.

@CorbanEsp sorry; I got all of the endings but it was a long time ago; still working on a new playthrough so there's a lot I don't specifically remember. I do feel like a lot changed in the anime though. I do like the show, and it's coherent enough, it's just the way some things went seemed a bit off.

I'm gonna be the first to outright say that I was a bit disappointed with how they changed Pascal & the kids' fate. The line "This is because I taught them fear" from Pascal hits WAY harder
(slight game spoilers) instead of just one of them being driven to cannibalism due to the virus. It is quite honestly one of the best moments in the entire game, and it hits even harder if you leave Pascal alive after it and meet his post-memory-wipe self at the ruins of the village.

Other than that, fantastic episode, and I still have hope that this will overall be an amazing adaptation for an already incredible story (which it so far has been).

The narrative impact and structure is wholly intact, and this will allow us to experience both gut punches independently. (joy, weeee)
Nier is a fun game, but in the end its story driven, and I firmly believe that there is some merit for people that have only watched the anime to then pick up the game to meet a .... surprise :/ And vice versa

Gotta say, I'm loving the way some of the plot points are shifted around, and still makes sense. Makes it feel fresh and interesting for me, having just played the game recently. Knowing what was coming with Pascal is one thing, but then realising that the Resistance being infected was indirectly his fault, AND having kids deaths be even more brutal than the game kept me very surprised. I've also been a big fan of how they develop the Resistance in the anime, since in the game, they're just kinda... there. Looking forward to the last stretch of episodes even more now.

@StateofOhayo well the pods are arguably the least conscious out of all the robot types in this world, all they saw was statistic and information, and they just shared that information with each other. it was also happening in the game the exact same way

but also, they way they connected the virus and the machine children works very well for the anime, while I do think the children's death and Pascal's fate was done better in game, I do like that they had an actual reason for these changes here
