I noticed this episode how much my feelings on Shirahoshi have changed. It wasn’t until Usopp said that they had to leave soon and she started to cry that I realized I found it endearing rather than obnoxious. I suppose that was the intended feeling we were supposed to have regarding her, as we like Luffy were supposed to slowly realize the strengths that she had making her more than a cry baby. I think we too were supposed to change her name to Yowahoshi like Luffy did. It's not that I didn't like her, I did find the fact that she cried so much regarding her dynamic with Luffy and how she had never been yelled at before super funny. But having her hold the truth of who killed her mother for so long, having her risk her life to chase away the Noah, and probably having seen her past with Otohime, it was enough to make a moment that I perhaps would have rolled my eyes at before endearing! Plus, Usopp constantly apologizing to her after yelling at her and her big role in the story helps. Going on this line of thought, although none of the supporting characters that we didn't already have a personal connection to spoke to me personally in the end, I think that they were a likeable bunch. Fukuboshi, Neptune, and Shirahoshi specifically.
The discussion between Jimbei and Neptune was one of my favourite parts of the episode. It was such a sweet and honorable moment between two men with a long history together, and it definitely came off that way. We got to hear about the Sun Pirates and how they're doing well, and we got to know that the connection with Big Mam was a product of Jimbei working with her. He himself realizes that she is an unreasonable figure, but he does realize that without Whitebeard it's the next best thing. The thing I love here was that Jimbei told Neptune it was just a coincidence, that by siding with Big Mam the Sun Pirates were free. It was like he was telling Neptune that this was no problem, that Neptune needs to feel no guilt over this, nor pay him back. But as if to address that, Neptune obviously see through it and tells Jimbei that he does not need to take all the responsibility alone, rather Neptune has a plan to fight back. The amount of respect between both of them as well as their honour was quite tangible! To finish it off coincidentally both of them laugh about how they would like the Straw Hats as the flag they hold high, and Jimbei confides in Neptune that he would like a situation to form that he could break it off with Big Mam and join the Straw Hats side! I found Jimbei’s line, “the pirate's world is all about obligation and honour”, one that defined him well. It reminds me of when he told the minister in his flashback, “sometimes, paying back a debt of honor is more important than carrying out my mission”. It will be great to have him with the Straw Hats. Maybe in time for their fight with Big Mam!
Pekoms and Caribou’s fight was one of my favourite parts of the episode. Pekom’s design and voice already drew me in, and I was wondering just how strong him and Tamago were, they are pirates under an emperor and at least Pekoms is knowledgeable about all of the notorious pirates out there. He recognized Luffy but recognizing Caribou is a bigger deal. They have to be able to put up a fight and intimidate to make sure people are forced to pay up, so to see his weird lion turtle shell, his shave and one punch finish, and those super cool lines “of course I am!!!”, or the standout line of the scene, “Logia eaters who think that they are invincible die young” sold how fearsome Big Mam’s pirates are. Pekoms appeared to be a 6 power / haki / devil fruit user and he goes to show that logia isn’t a free pass anymore once you’re in the New World! And with designs & quirks as memorable as these two, as well as their linking to an emperor, and generally the fact that I love their archetype means that I'm excited to see them again one day.
Last but not least, we got an update on Smoker and Tashigi. Tashigi has a fanclub under her as the captain of the G -5 branch but all in all, she doesn't seem too different. Her line “don't treat me lightly because I'm a woman” was more Kuina vibes for sure. We got to see the G-5 branch itself, as it's notorious for being a brutal rogue branch of the navy, one that doesn't obey anyone, full of marines who appear more like pirates. But, with Smoker and Tashigi still holding official titles I’d assume they are enough use to the navy that they keep them around! I was joking to my friend that with Magellan not stopping the Impel Down riot that he probably lost his job, and with Aokiji leaving the navy, and Smoker already being pretty gosh darn rogue that perhaps there was a secret navy that represented true justice being formed. Justice in a more Coby sense. This isn't exactly that, and with the notorious cruelty that G-5 allegedly enacts perhaps this is a case of absolute power being corrupted too, Smoker does remind me of Dirty Harry type, but it's so nice to see and I think it's a good approach for Smoker as his moral code has always gone against the navy. Having full reign to do what he thinks is right is something I'm all for, even if only because I like Smoker and I like to see him thrive. |
