I wont give any spoilers since we're talking about the anime here but I will say it's dreadfully ironic that this anime has attracted so many people who insist Makoto must be trans or non-binary just because of the things he likes when that goes against the whole message of the series; it's no different than Makoto's mother insisting he likes masculine things because he's a guy.

it's funny that you think this isn't a valid interpretation from a series with multiple queer main characters. not about to sit here and fight with you- i've done this plenty of times before. but this series resonates with a lot of trans people for a reason.
@yoroshikus Stop acting a victim, nobody is here to "fight" with you in the first place. Who the series resonates with is irrelevant because it doesn't change the fact that the character is a male and identifies as a male. |

Am I the only one who thinks Makoto isn't just a 'crossdresser' like the anime is described to be?
I think she shows some various hints that she's trans and not just crossdressing. Yes, she says shes a "boy" but is she really? When she gets to choose the gender she gets to present at school in an environment where she doesn't get pressured by her mum to be a 'normal boy' she chooses to be a girl, and no I don't mean that trans people can choose whatever gender they are at the moment but for Makoto there's been so many flags raised for her to be a transgirl. She shows most comfort when she sees herself as a girl and able to dress as she pleases, so is she really just 'a boy who likes cute things'?

@arlori While you're not wrong to be leaning in that direction, it doesn't mean anything unless the author makes it canon. |

@Kernous It's not remotely just because he "likes cute things", he's a heavily trans coded character, and you lack media literacy if you can't see that. Of course, writing characters that are fundamentally trans and practically live as women 24/7 but default to "I'm a guy" not because they identify that way, but because they're biologically male, is absolutely nothing new for anime. Hell, I don't even trust that the conversation with Makoto's dad about gender/identity wasn't an overreach by localizers. Oh, and you're very clearly giving away spoilers, since he could 100% be closeted at this stage in the anime. |

@arlori Its totally reasonable to read Makoto through a trans lens imo. The show as a whole is very much about gender identity and gender roles, and discussions on that topic will inherently include trans people. As of now Makoto seems to identify with masculine pronouns, though who knows how much of that is them trying to appease their mom and others around them. It'd be really cool if officially Makoto takes on a trans identity, but even if they don't they're still an extremely trans character thematically even if it isn't written in the text xD. I certainly see some of my trans experience within Makoto, and its really nice and refreshing seeing a character so trans coated! ;D In the end gender is a social construct blah blah blah ya know the drill. If in the text Makoto ends up feeling happiest just being a feminine boy, that can exist in tandem with reading them as transfem. If reading Makoto as a trans woman makes ya happy I think that's totally cool and reasonable to relate to them and feel seen! Gender is arbitrary and just kinda whatever vibes you identify with and feel happiest about and I think that's cool. Usually anime, especially older shows arent so kind when it come gender nonconforming characters. So this anime has been a treat for me so far when it comes to this kinda thing! |

The title of this episode “Goodbye, Me” is a little controversial. From this, we can understand that Makoto is done being and dressing like a girl and also he stopped loving the cute things as normal girls do, but it is different when you’re a guy. In the first part of the episode, it seemed weird how spontaneous Makoto did not want to look like a girl. Too quickly, if you ask me. But, later, thanks to Aoi Saki, who always thought that this is a lie, he began to dress again as a girl. I do not know why producers thought to keep maintaining the MC in this way, it would have been awesome if Makoto gave up completely about girly things, since everyone treated him differently when they saw him as a boy. |

It might be a hot take, but I felt quite annoyed by Aoi in this episode. Sure, from the viewers perspective what she said and did was correct with the lucky outcome that Makoto overcomes the internal conflict. But from her perspective, she was consistently and baselessly claiming that Makoto is lying without knowing the whole context, just because her "intuition" told. Imo this is straight up gaslighting. It would've been better if she tried to understand the situation and figure out the reason for Makotos change of mind. In the end, I'm glad for Makoto. Just wished they handled it differently. |

Liking cute things? Relatable. Wanting to wear women's clothing? Fine. Wanting to wear high heels? Nobody should want to wear high heels. Decent episode, but it does feel like they're rushing things (not that I'm familiar with the source material). I'm sure his mum just doesn't want him to have a difficult life and will need to see him at his happiest to understand him, presumably with the help of his friends. |

I really liked this episode. It was a great portrayal of trying to fit in because of societal pressures, and forcing oneself to be “normal”. Which resulted in being liked by said society, even if that version of oneself is but a facade, forcing to be the same as others. This is extremely poignant in Japanese society, since it’s very collectivist and uniformist, where collective good is placed well above any personal good. Also, Makoto’s dad is a Chad. |

Damn, Makoto's mom is so overdramatic but I do understand she is worried but she always approaches things in such a bad way. His dad is way more chill but also seemed too quick to make same conclusions so the contrast was a bit much but he is a nice dad. It actually hurt seeing Makoto throw away things that meant something to him because of his mom. I mean not the superficial stuff just like some of it is connected to memories ya know. Feel sorry for Makotos date. Taking her wig and running lol Saki running after the dump truck and winding up cross dress dancing with Makoto was cute. I just now noticed Makoto switches pronouns around moment to moment and not just when his mom is around. Hard to interpret since I do know that is common in Japanese as is but how someone refers to themself can show some aspect of their personality. SawronZXZ said: Dang Makoto really snapped there for a minute. I get his mom having traditional values or whatever but if it makes your kid happy and it isn't hurting anyone who tf cares. I guess she's too worried about her own reputation than Makoto's happiness, possibly. His dad is a badass for real though for doing that for him. It isnt exclusively a conservative thing for parents to react that way, though they would be more likely to act just like his mom. I dont think "traditionalist" works well when talking of Japan because those views were imported from the West and are foreign to Japanese culture prior. WerewolfAshen said: I'm currently accepting his male identification choice and assuming he's non-binary. I was thinking gender queer since there is a sort of lack of identification as anything particularly other than cute thing enjoyer. Though "questioning" (as being trans) also would fit some of the dialogue this episode. I think only those labels make sense for now but i hate labels in general because they view people monolithically in a narrow scope and there just is getting too be too many labels to even remember and the differences are so mild in some and always arbitrary blurry boundaries. Just a mild writing oversight. We are expected to know Aoi sensed something was up from subtle expressions of Makoto. But also it being so sudden without seeing any previous discomfort. So she knew something was up but didnt know what. I do get why you see it that way since it came off weird when she first confronted him. It would have been better if she tried to pry more if something happened at least. |

The mother is overreacting with Makoto liking cute stuff. I get that she might be shocked on seeing her son trying to wear a skirt but what's the big deal with wanting to have cute stuff!? I'm not into crossdressing boys but I do like guys who are into cute stuff. And I'm a bit disappointed that his childhood friend Ryuji didn't notice but Aoi did about what Makoto truly wanted and how he was just forcing himself when he stopped with his crossdressing. |

@Maou_heika What is the big deal with that? That he will get f@cked up hard by the society he lives in. There is a japanese saying that "the nail that sticks out gets hammered down", and that means most of the times bullying, osctracizing or even worst, physical atrocities in a cases like his. I don't like that how tamely the anime handles this theme as if it was forgetting that this story is not taking place in a "woke" society but in Japan. Wandering son did this way better. |

I understand the sincerity of Aoi's intentions and the context, but I don't like that we were once again one step away from other characters imposing their understanding of his "true self" on the MC. They could very well have had a heart-to-heart with Makoto instead of demanding that he behave in a way that THEY believe is true to him. Also, when "Kohai wa Ikemen Onna" ? @Ishitateso Wandering son was about literal transsexuality and was pre-set to explore issues of bigotry and oppression. Here is a love comedy about the toxicity of gender standards. Not every show about gender representation needs to be a lecture on transphobia. By the same logic, you might expect each of your favorite yuri to be a realistic tutorial on homophobia and heteronormativity. Not to mention the fact that Japan is not the only country in the world where they are trying to silence those who stand out. This happens everywhere, just for different reasons. @Maou_heika His mother is so obsessed with this because, due to prejudice, she is afraid that Makoto is a "pervert" and will ruin his future life because of this. Many parents of “unusual” children go through this. |

His mother just doesn't want to be seen as a weird mother who raised a twisted son so she overreact whenever she see cute things with Makoto. Lucky for him that his father acknowledge him and find a school that let him dressed as a girl. Isn't it beautiful if only we could be true to ourself, enjoy doing and liking the things that we love. The way Makoto and Aoi made up during the party and spontaneous wardrobe change for Makoto was dazzling. The gender role switch between them was fucking beautiful. Him wearing the suit with long hair is truly a sight to behold. I wonder how will Makoto figuring out how he want to be refer as in the long run. |

Makoto is a lot more supported than I had initially thought, aside from their piece of sh*t mother. They even have a father that actually supports them (i.e. they can rely on at least 1 parent since the mother is ...). I feel like Makoto suddenly asking for another person's wig was really out of place though, even if the ultimate goal was to have them wear a dress at the end there. |

@Deryks If you think Ryuuji didn't know it was a lie too, you're not giving him enough credit, he just isn't as blunt as outspoken as Aoi. This literally has nothing to do with "gaslighting" she knew it was a lie because it was completely obvious that it's not how he really felt just by seeing how happy he is when he gets to freely express his feminine side. |

@LostSpectre I never mentioned Ryuuji and he was probably aware that Makoto wasn't honest. That's not the point. You can have the impression that a person is lying and doesn't matter how obvious it might seem to oneself. But if you keep on telling that person that they are lying without trying to find out the truth, this is gaslighting behaviour for me or at least not how you should treat someone you care about. It was more important to you at that moment that you were right. Even if we would say that wasn't gaslighting how did she react? She called Makoto a liar and started avoiding him. |

Idk where this quote was from but I think it fits well and I really love it "Live life on your own terms" Live how you want and as long as your not hurting others that's fine. Firstly to mention the mother she's a bad person if she cant except him for who he is, I love that the father was willing to stick up for him and even the school it seemed. Dam tho those students and classmates are terrible for avoiding him and suddenly being all chummy with him when he changes back to his guy persona. Trying to be yourself can be hard and not having your family accept that can be even harder. I'm a guy and I remember living the first 14 roughly years off my life with short hair. But I finally decided to grow it out and my family never once judged me for it. If you have someone in your corner even if its just one person who accepts you for who you are than thats a great thing. Some may see it as stubborn from Aoi or that maybe she only liked the girl version of Makoto but it was obvious from her first reaction that she immediately could get a read on Makoto and knew he wasn't happy. That's something Ryuuji wasn't certain off and I love that Aoi picked up on that immediately. She's a great person and clearly loves Makoto a lot. I love that Aoi was willing to chase after Makoto's stuff for him I love her so much for that. I love that shot of Makoto jumping down to Aoi, its a nice call back to the episode when Aoi jumped down from the tree's after grabbing the handkerchief and that shot of them dancing was cute. Op and Ed are absolute bangers still |

@LostSpectre Isn't it gaslighting if she ignored any reason, didn't try to find the truth and kept convincing Makoto that she was right? At least from my understanding. But I could be wrong about the correct definition of this term. |

Damn the part with Makoto's mom was pretty heartbreaking. At least Makoto has his dad to back him up, what a great dad. I still find Aoi to be annoying and the way she went about insisting that Makoto isn't telling the truth by ignoring him instead of asking for a heart-to-heart talk was very immature, but I guess it makes sense since they're still just in HS. Makoto's partner at the dance wearing a girl wig (that looks almost exactly like Makoto's original wig lol) and Aoi spotting the tossed shoes on top of the garbage truck felt way too convenient and far-fetched, but otherwise it was a good episode. Kudos to Aoi for having the willpower and speed to chase after the tossed shoes. I especially like the part where Makoto and Aoi exchanged their suits and dresses, respectively, and danced in front of the ocean. That was really cute. |

The more serious scenes before the OP were really strong and a good sign of the potential this show has to be something truly great. Alas, straight after the OP it's back to nearly every other scene being the god-awful, budget-saving chibi that just looks abysmal every single time they use it. It just completely takes me out of the show every time and clashes so hard with the tone this series is attempting to have. The show clearly has potential and something to say when it actually takes itself seriously, so why does it have to shoot itself in the foot and ruin the mood at almost every opportunity? |

correct me if i'm wrong, but this episode adapts up to chapter 16, which was the original ending for the manga. it got popular enough for a full serialisation hence why this is only ep 3
Oh, that makes sense. I was wondering why this felt like a final episode a quarter of the way into the run. |

Knowing the cat's out of the bag, Makoto thankfully has Aoi to back onto for her handkerchief, through one can see why his past was riddled that way that his subconsciousness slowly drivels to that of a girl's, which doesn't sit well with his mother. His father instead was supportive, but Makoto decides to appease his mother instead, which despite her thinking, that's his priority. The surprise of everyone seeing that Makoto is his own self, Aoi is definitely not happy about that, while Ryuji is fine either way, being glad that he can see Makoto as a boy. Still, regardless of his crossdressing, Makoto is just treated more or less the same that it has ever been. But on the cusp of a relationship as a boy and girl, however, that doesn't sit well with Aoi, regarding Makoto as someone full of lies. Oh welp, Ryuji hearing that Makoto confessed to Aoi, he sure is dejected too as well. But Makoto has made up his mind for the upcoming Founder's Day party in school to stop his girly ways, he's also throwing his girlish behaviour aside, for good. As both Aoi and Ryuji are spectators to Makoto's renewed boyish ways, his party date with a classmate of his, Hanekawa, plus Aoi's handkerchief that he must return to her to avoid throwing it away, is triggering his true feelings once again. The off chance that Aoi spotted Makoto's belongings (espeically the heels) thrown to the garbage truck, she really (and I mean REALLY) makes a run to salvage his girly things, and realizing that he can't run away from the temptation of being a true crossdressing boy, admits to Aoi of his true feelings. It's better to stay true to yourself than follow what society laid down for you. Makoto, great job. |

It was two weeks of doubt, yet he returned to his true self thanks to best girl Aoi. How can you draw lovely background scenes yet draw other people like NPCs. |

So what happened to the dad? I like that he was willing to accept Makoto for who they are. Now the mom...fuck her man. Makoto was quick on his feet by saying the handkerchief was Aoi's. This episode actually made me tear up. Ahh, Aoi is such a sweetie. I'm glad she did all of that so Makoto could be themselves again. Its sad how everyone treated Makoto differently once he started dressing like a boy. I've said this already, but Aoi really carries this anime. |

Yeah, I do understand source material readers now..... why they are kinda disappointed in the adaptation. They clearly skipped many materials here, this def feels like a season finale. Still a good EP tho, but can be made so much better. A waste of potential rly. |

Real question, please spoil it for me if you must, but does the mom ever come around in the story?? I'm so close to dropping this anime because it's legitimately triggering me. I'm non binary myself and my gender dysphoria is too strong for this. That anime woman is legitimately pissing me off so bad I almost feel like I don't wanna watch it anymore
@Lay1306 !SPOILER OF THE WEB COMIC! The mother eventually comes around, the reason why she behaves like this is also touched upon later on, although I'm not sure if all of that will be adapted in the anime. Her dad was a crossdresser and her friends saw him doing so, she thought it was weird and didn't want her son to be singled out. Something like that, read it a while ago so it might not be fully accurate. |

Fuck the mother. She reminds me of why I despise religious people. |

I think Makoto has always admired the Cinderella story that he even keeps the book inside of his secret locker. The author created a parallel to that story with Makoto being the princess that lost his high heels and Saki being the prince that retrieves them for him. |

ah ya those extreme conventional hysterical asian moms. such a great dad though, he needs more screentime. lots of sad this ep, but interesting on social norms, how Makoto treated differently. find the faceless classmates weird choice. any long plot eventually the trio may interact & gain more friends, better to setup the side early on. finally mc & Saki made up, well done cloth swap and identity moment. |
