I never was obsessed with anime but degradation of other media provoked me to try anime in late 2000s and I watched it happily till 2015 or so but then anime was poisoned with isekai and other typical crap so I became all critical and strict about new anime titles, I switched to manga. I still find old anime which are great and not so widely known, they have pretty low scores by modern standards but they are much better than present anime titles with much higher rating.

They stop as soon as they get peer pressured into "being a normal adult" by their circle of friends.
Or as soon as their first girlfriend tells them to stop watching anime. Many such cases of weak men who become obedient dogs just to score in bed. Pathetic.

I imagine a large percentage of viewers become more casual as they age. People for the most part are naturally curious, and there is so much media to enjoy that is not anime, be it books and movies and video games. I think the stranger thing is when people do not expand their horizons and consume other types of media from different countries. I think for the many people who brag about solely viewing anime that they are intellectually stunted at the very least. Akin to Americans who live their whole lives within the US, or even just their state.

I would not worry then about growing out of anime, but not growing out of it.

It doesn't matter the age, I still watch anime as long I won't develop a normal/common social life, a family of my own, others adult hobbies and activities, or I am too busy with work.

My "hardcore" phase ended after about 8 years, when I really ran out of spare time to constantly be watching anime.
Outside of that, I'm on 20+ years of watching depending on what one would consider a starting point.
Nowadays I keep up with 2-3 new anime a season, and maybe watch a couple episodes every other day of an older anime or two I missed when it was bigger.

I’m also someone who’s been watching anime for a while, probably around 25 years. If anything I feel like I’m more into anime now simply because anime and manga are so much more accessible now outside of Japan.

When I was younger I would be into like 3 anime at a time because those were what I got on cable tv as a kid. Now as a working adult with internet streaming services I watch 4-5 seasonal anime as they air as well as binging some completed shows I didn’t watch when I was younger. It’s a lot more convenient now than it was back in the early 2000s to watch anime.

I’m actually glad it’s gotten a lot more mainstream now. Even if someone only watched one anime in their entire life a friend recommended it. I’m really happy that people now know what anime is.

I wonder if my lifespan is when I get tired of anime...

It is difficult to give an average age because people start and stop watching anime at different ages.

There are people like me who once got tired of watching anime and stopped watching it, but then started watching it again.

From my observation

What kind of anime fans have you been observing, exactly, to come to this conclusion?

Personally, I wouldn't say I've had a "hardcore phase" longer than a few weeks, but I've been watching anime steadily for 4-5 years now, and I don't feel disillusioned at all. In fact, I feel like I'm just getting started.

The few anime fans I've interacted with IRL have been going steady for way longer than 5 years. Many of them do watch less over time, but it's mostly because of how busy they've gotten.

I don't think there would be a noticeable pattern in terms of "lifespan," at least one that's unique to anime compared to other hobbies/media.

I started watching Japanese with subtitles around 2004 and had to step back in 2015 because there were no anime left that I was interested in watching. By that time my anime list exceeded 10.000 entries. I've been cautious ever since to never run into that situation again. It was kinda devastating.

Now it's become a bit difficult to start new anime, since each anime I watch brings me closer to running out of anime again.

This situation depends on how much of a anime fan you are and your motivation for watching anime. If your reason for watching anime is similar to your reason for watching TV series and movies (to have fun and pass the time) and you are not excessively addicted (i.e., not someone whose mind is solely occupied with anime), then your anime journey could last around 10-15 years. However, I must emphasize that being an anime fan does not necessarily mean constantly watching new anime. After a while, you might stop watching new anime, but you will still occasionally rewatch your favorite shows over the years, as long as those shows have qualities that make them "enjoyable" for you.

There are two key points here:
1. Your motivation for watching anime

If we take "average" as the mean then 5 years might be accurate, since a lot of people probably try out anime and only keep up with it for a couple months while others watch for decades. In spaces that attract more dedicated fans a lot of them tend to have been watching for a long time, but the average anime fan probably hasn't been watching for all that long. I've been watching anime for 10 years and I doubt I'll quit anytime soon.

I used to just consoom shows, but after two years of watching anime, I began to consoom while pacing myself. Is that the disillusionment people are talking about? Going back to old shows definitely sparks more interest in me again, 2000-2010, probably because I've been largely watching seasonals for a while now, but I don't think we're talking about complete disillusionment. Just the ebbs, and flows of interest that appear in everything.

If I had to hazard a guess, 3-5 years if we take very average watchers into consideration. People sometimes call themselves anime fans even only having seen 5 anime, which is true if they find they have a passion for the medium, but honestly most people who will say they're fans of anime, probably 3-5 years from my own experience. Lots of friends of mine started to get into it in high school, and haven't watched anything since.

When I was little I was watching some old school anime my parents used to watch, then in 2011 I start watching on my own and I was randomly selecting what to watch until the goated mainstream anime syndrome hit in 2013 and every popular anime was great , the greatness of the mainstream sadly ended in 2017 when iseki took over and I believed it was time and stopped consuming it until four years later I realised the mainstream following was holding me back from enjoying anime and that I needed to dig the gold and find what I actually find entertaining

I lasted about 7 years or so before I completely fell off.

No matter how good a new anime is objectively (cool characters, amazing animation, fresh story idea), I just cannot connect with the medium anymore.

I think I've been watching for... 25 years now? Sounds about right. Of course, not every phase of my anime life was the same, as a child I watched shows in the local language, we are talking about Pokemon, Digimon, Conan, Yugioh and the likes. When I was like 15, so 17 years ago, I got into Naruto, and from there the floodgates opened. Since 15 years ago I have been an avid watcher, high time was 10-5 years ago where I watched even lots of the seasonals. Nowadays I like to rewatch lots of stuff I liked, but also watch new shows when they pique my interest. But I don't really feel like quitting at any point. Anime is a part of me and made me what I am today, and that won't change.
@Play2X @Coaghim me too. I mean, i never saw much as you, but i still watch it and i am full grown adult.

I just dont watch as much as i used to. Sometimes i watch hit shows or shows that interests me, i can stay like 6 months without watching a single anime, then in a spam of 6 month watch like 4. I sometimes catch up, some old interesting ones (for example, AOT and Vinland Saga) or just watch some, to have solid 20 minutes stress free (Nagatoro) to watch it and rest from my responsabilities, when i have time.

I am not the same like, watching half a anime in a day, i can stay months without watching any, but here and there i still watch it. I will be forever a fan.
More then 15 years now.

Maybe I'm part of some exception to prove the rule, but I got into anime in Middle school, so i've been a fan for... 10 years or so. And then, when I started buying merch, my dad revealed to me that he's been something of an anime fan since the 90s, so about 30 years.

I think the secret is the same secret to a good marriage: You have to appreciate things for what they are, even as they change. a lot of fans get really bitter when the thing they're nostalgic for doesn't get much attention anymore. For me, I could be bitter about how mecha is situated nowadays (I might be, just a little bit), but I still enjoy the shows that come out for what they are now. It also helps that I don't genre-lock myself, I enjoy things from Meathead shonen to Shoujo or even "Josei" from time to time. I truly believe anime, and the closely related industries like Video games, visual novels, and manga, can easily be a lifelong passion.

Idk if there is a lifespan, so to speak. It differs for each person.

I still like anime, otherwise I wouldn't be posting here, though I don't watch as much as I used to. Some of it could be because most modern shows don't really interest me, but I don't ever see myself totally cutting anime out of my life.
