As per title, do you prefer a certain length episode? Short 10min, long 50min or the standard 24min episode? If studios released a variation of lengths based on how much they animated that week would it bother you? (i.e slow week = shorter episode vs productive week = longer episodes) any examples?

I find that episodes that are shorter tend to have more essential character and plot packed into them vs longer episodes tend to expand in scope. I personally prefer longer episodes 55min or longer since there is more opportunity to focus on a single storyline seamlessly. (like Mobile Suit Gundam series)

I cry when I find something interesting and then I see it's 3-10 min. per episode, good it's rarely the case. It must be 24 min. for me, I also dislike those long ones.

A few of my favorite Chinese anime are about 7-10 minutes per episode, and its just annoying as fuck to have to go to the next episode so often, because you have to skip the outro of current episode, intro of next episode, and often go through like three ads and then wait for each episode to buffer

I think the sweet spot is 20-50 minutes, anything over is too long, and anything under is too short.

24 min is perfect, Its already conformed so just keep it consistent, one rule of art i have herd before is to keep the scadule consistent

55+ minutes might as well premier each one in Imax theatres, 45min+ I consider them as movies

I prefer the standard around 23 or so minutes (basically a half hour time slot minus commercial time for series airing on TV) just because I have seen the most episodes of about that length (in anime and everything else) so it's what I'm most familiar with and accustomed to. It just feels right.

But that said, I certainly won't mind or complain if episodes are of a different length if the series interests me enough to start it and continue watching it in the first place. Especially longer lengths, like 45 minutes or more. If I was very into a show, then I'd even lean toward preferring each individual episode to be longer and meatier.

What doesn't appeal to me as much is the extremely short episodes of 3 - 5 minutes (I've seen some 1 - 2 minute ones) in series that are basically considered and formatted as shorts. Occasionally I come across their pages throughout the database on MAL, but I've yet to see one the synopsis of which tempted me enough to start watching and deal with the minor aggravation of having to start and stop new episodes so quickly and frequently on whichever website I'd be watching them.

I'm used to the half hour long format, and I don't mind longer episodes. Shorter episodes are usually OVAs, and movies are just... movies.

Yes. If it's a basic slife of life, I prefer the duration isn't longer than 15 minutes per episode. I don't have any problem with general duration and episodes though (24 minutes per episode, 12 episode per season). I wouldn't pick an anime movie if it's more than 2 hours 30 minutes long.

I think the content of the show is more important; long or short does not matter, as long as it is able to convey the story to its audience.

Sometimes, the duration of a show is also depending on the targeted audiences. In children's shows, particularly for very young ones, the show production tends to be short which is very suitable for younger children since they may not have long attention span.

Standard is okay but I like slightly longer episodes of 32 minutes which you get sometimes in BlueRay releases I think but some as much as 40 I can do with too.

I don't care too much for shorter animes, they just aren't that good because they don't have time do develop well, but the long ones are kinda hard for me to watch. I'm not much into movies, so an anime with more than 4 episodes each having around 1h is kinda hard to follow. Certainly there are some of them that are good, but it's just too much for one episode.

23 or 24 minutes. I hate it when some shitty wannabe isekai kicks off with a double feature like they think their industrial produced trash is high art... but if it's actually good then a double feature is appreciated sometimes.

I strongly prefer 24 minutes.

I've gotten way too used to this that it's difficult to watch longer TV show episodes now, anime or otherwise. I'm still fine with feature-length movies, however.

Pluto with its 1 hour episodes was a chore to get through, unfortunately. I had to put that on-hold. Then again, maybe I just find Pluto a little slow.

Pretty much the same here and I'm sometimes aware of hour long episode depending on the anime and when its generally expected to have that runtime.

If anime was 10min per episode, then one piece would spend 3min on opening/ending, 5min recapping previous episodes, 0.5min previewing next episode, and end up having maybe 1-2 minutes of new content lolz.

Yes. I watched Katanagatari last year and it's a hassle to finish, not because of quality but because it's 50 minutes per episode.

24 minutes is the sweet spot to squeeze an episode in at lunch or before bed.

It depends on the anime. For most anime it'd be the standard 23-24 min/ep. I've seen comedies doing well with 10 min or less (Cromartie, Sexy Commando, Gakuen Handsome, Di Gi Charat). Some like Katanagatari and MiA have done well with 50 min long.

This.

Shorter is better for SoL or comedy. Things you don't need a big investment to enjoy
Longer is better for more serious or immersive stuff. So vice versa.

The standard is generally fine. Some shows would probably benefit from having a bit longer episodes though (like maybe 30 minutes).
I do think it's harder to pull off shorter over longer.

If it is good it doesn't matter what length it is. I really appreciated the long initial episode for oshi no ko. It really would have broke my engagement if it was cut up into like 4-5 episodes. I also found the Rezero first episode to be really quiet interesting as it really captures the time travel premise, which might be lost if its split into 2 parts. I don't think I would be as interested in the show if it had just been the first 24 mins I had seen.

As long as there is a good reason I think having longer episodes works if they can utilize the run time. Also shows who have shorter time can be pretty great as they really need to be precise on how they use each episode. A major flaw of older anime is that they had these heavily inflated episode counts and lots of filler. It just doesn't work in the modern age. Sure people do still watch long running shows, but if they released today they might not be so popular because they almost disrespect your time by having so much filler.

Yeah, it's important. Short episodes, like 3 minutes or less, are almost always used for gag humour since it's difficult to do much else with that format. 8 minute episodes were popular at one point in the late 2010s but that died off, although I kind of liked that length, being still fairly short but still long enough to tell a bit of a story each episode. 24 minute episodes works for most shows but there's some that have to cram a few stories in to get up to 24 minutes and others that have to break stories up into 24 minute segments.

Kochinpa did 15 second episodes for the first 2 seasons and 15 minute episodes for the third, and that drastically changed the feel of the anime. 15 seconds isn't really enough to do much of anything with narratively while 15 minutes is plenty. Even S3 is still episodic, but they do make an overarching storyline to that season and the show is much more entertaining than the first 2 seasons.

Yama no Susume also changed episode duration between seasons, from 3 minutes in season 1 to 12 minutes in seasons 2 and 3 to 24 minutes in season 4. The show itself didn't really change, but the show flows better when it's given more time instead of being given a tiny snippet and then it's over and you have to go to the next episode right away.
