Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan

To the average person, psychic abilities might seem a blessing; for Kusuo Saiki, however, this could not be further from the truth. Gifted with a wide assortment of supernatural abilities ranging from telepathy to x-ray vision, he finds this so-called blessing to be nothing but a curse. As all the inconveniences his powers cause constantly pile up, all Kusuo aims for is an ordinary, hassle-free life—a life where ignorance is bliss.

Unfortunately, the life of a psychic is far from quiet. Though Kusuo tries to stay out of the spotlight by keeping his powers a secret from his classmates, he ends up inadvertently attracting the attention of many odd characters, such as the empty-headed Riki Nendou and the delusional Shun Kaidou. Forced to deal with the craziness of the people around him, Kusuo comes to learn that the ordinary life he has been striving for is a lot more difficult to achieve than expected.

Good comedy series that sometimes plays around with cool concepts. You should expect to laugh. You should not expect any epic battles, intense drama, or heartfelt emotional moments. What Saiki K does in comedy, and it does it the right way (most of the time).

Most of the humor from this series comes from the characters and their interactions. It is divided into shorts that normally take a bit to build up to the reveal of a big joke or have several jokes revolving around one concept. It does not use a lot of slapstick humor or repetitive stuff you would see somewhere else.

This series actually ... does reference humor the right way. It makes direct references, sometime calling out the name exactly, but doesn't make the reference the entire joke. This allows people who wouldn't get the reference to still understand the rest of the joke.

Mixed Feelings

This is a show that I feel bad for not liking that much, because the biggest issue I have with it, really isn’t this show’s fault. And that is the animation. Now I’m not going to bash a show for a poor budget, nor am I going to praise a show just because the animation is good. But with this show in particular, the jokes just fall completely flat due to the lack of energy the animation has. All of the jokes are told so simply and directly that, even though they are hilarious and the cast of characters are amazing, they just are presented ... in a way that feels like they didn’t care about the jokes. Which I know isn’t the truth. The jokes lack energy. The build-ups aren’t built up enough and the reveals and payoff aren’t shocking enough. Just take a look at their jokes and imagine if it was told with the same animation of something like Mob Psycho or Nichijou. Kineshi’s enthusiasm and pumped-up fiery spirit would be so much more dramatic and pronounced, making his failings be that much more impactful when the punchlines come in. Saiki’s crazy powers would finally feel overpowered and amazing, which would clash wonderfully with his actors deadpan deliveries. As it is, it feels like a powerpoint presentation of a bunch of jokes the writer thought of. It is funny, but not nearly as funny as it could have been if it were given the proper budget. Presentation is just as important as the content itself.

Saiki is an anime about a boy who has psychic powers but despite this awesome gift he is very pessimistic
Story: The story isn't really anything special but this anime doesn't particularly need anything grand as its very episodic and cut up in 5-minute segments.

Art: Pretty awful to be honest. Characters aren't ugly but the animation is so lazy.

Sound: The voice acting was fine, and they have some nice quirky sound effects which can be quite charming

Characters: Saiki is a funny character and is quite relatable in his thinking, however, the surrounding characters are very over the top and can sometimes be funny, but other ... times annoying

Enjoyment: This is just pure fun and something light-heart to put on in the background. The humour was funny at first but after a few hours of watching it became mundane.
