Early-mid 2000s anime – what are your thoughts?

This is 2024, and next year will be 2025. The anime from 2000-2005 will be twenty years old.

I was fortunate to get into anime through the Animax channel in Africa from 2007 to 2011, which showed off enough of anime from the 90s and 2000s. It maintained my interest in anime, that has stayed wth me since then to today.

Though nostalgia may play a big part in my thoughts, I thought anime back then had a new feel (I think that word can apply). Everything looked new, I think they were using new techniques (digital effects, camera movements). Also there was all sorts of new content being adapted, more so than previously, though I think the main trend was towards romantic comedy/drama, perhaps due to adolescence feeling stronger around the 2000s era.

Anyway, here are a few clips from 2000s anime.

If we're talking about January 1st 2000 to December 31st 2004 then:

.hack//Sign
Area 88
Astro Boy
Azumanga Daioh
Bleach
Cromartie High School
Dead Leaves
FLCL
Full Moon wo Sagashite
GitS Stand Alone Complex
Gundam SEED
Hanada Shounen-shi
Hoshi no Koe
Interstella 5555
InuYasha
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
Juuni Kokuki
Keroro Gunsou
Kino's Journey
Millennium Actress
Mind Game
Monster
Paranoia Agent
S-CRY-ed
Samurai Champloo
Sentou Yousei Yukikaze
Spirited Away
Texhnolyze
Yakitate!! Japan

If we include 2005 then also:

Arashi no Yoru ni
Aria
Kamichu!
Mushishi
Pale Cocoon
Paradise Kiss
Speed Grapher

While ignoring some others. It was a time when anime had variety. What's more interesting is that i had no nostalgia with this era yet for some reason i feel nostalgic watching them today and i don't get that same feeling with anime released before or since (save for 1995-99 anime).

Btw, Bartender and Fate came out in 2006.

Guess this is just a "Here's what I love from the mid-2000s." thread... Well then, here's two anime I loved from the mid-2000s. (Keeping it from 2004-2006 is a bit tough, but I tried. I didn't read the "early" part until after the fact, so it's all mid 2000s from me.)

Angel Heart

Midori no Hibi

EDIT: Fine. Got some more that I loved, this time from the early half of the 2000s.

Rikujou Bouei-tai Mao-chan

Hanada Shounen-shi

Cinderella Boy

My least favorite era in terms of visuals. From what I heard, it might be because the DVDRips from that time didn't preserve the same quality as the originals.

There were quite a few great anime from that year, including many that went largely unnoticed:

2000 - Miami Guns, Strange Dawn, Banner of the Stars

2001 - The SoulTaker, Banner of the Stars II

2002 - Witch Hunter Robin, Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex, Haibane Renmei

2003 - Stratos 4, Kino no Tabi, Texhnolyze, Gungrave

2004 - Koi Kaze, Cossette no Shouzou, Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase

2005 - Gallery Fake, Stratos 4 Advance, Zettai Shounen, Basilisk, Tide-Line Blue, Canvas 2, Pale Cocoon

No doubt there are more worthwhile anime in the early-mid 2000s too, as long as people are willing to give them a chance. Early digital animation is definitely contentious enough that anime from 2000-2003 in particular are often dismissed as a result.

I spent most of my childhood watching some anime from that time and even when i became a bigger fan of the medium five years ago i still watched more. That era had a lot of gems especially when i glanced at the Spring 2006 line-up which had a ton of classics coming out from that season. Definitely one of my favorite periods of anime for sure.

Who are you and why do you show your hostility towards a complete stranger whom you've not once spoken with before. Are you seriously asking to get blocked? Well, if that's what your intent is; to tempt me into throwing hands with someone as lowly and insignificant as you, then i may grant your wish provided you articulate yourself a bit better when trying to spite a person of my wavelength.

not the biggest fan of that era, but then again, I probably need to explore it more. We had some quality stuff, starting with Naruto (before fillers) and Hajime no Ippo.

We also had:
- Monster,
- FMA2003
- Gantz (despite the filler final arc)
- Midori no hibi (a bit underrated)
- Samurai Shamploo
- HxH99 (most episodes aired in the early 2000s)
- Vandread
- Digimon Tamers

And let´s not forget Interstella 5555, the giant videoclip made for one of the most historically relevant albums in history of EDM.

My top 10 anime has allot of anime from recently but they speak to me on a persona level. Yet I will say they don´t make anime as they used to.

Man 80s-90s and early 2000 anime was something else that they don´t do today. Slayer, Domino tank police, Patlabor, Outlaw stars, Banner of the star, Star zinger, So so so so many great anime and the high area of sci-fi today we barely get any more show like Macross of Legend of the galatic heroes and it makes me sad.

I think that it's the entire reason behind why I got into anime in the first place and is not only the greatest anime, but some of the best media across all mediums and best art across all forms. And make no qualms about or harbor any fear of overstating the case.

Inuyasha (2000), Koi Kaze (2004), Haibane Renmei (2002), and Higurashi (2006) are some of my favorite art, worlds, and stories in all of life and existence. They really changed my outlook on how much fictional media could mean and come to represent to me personally, and I'm someone who was already a movie and TV series junkie watching so many thousands of different ones years before ever properly discovering anime. So for it to change my outlook and calculus later in the game after I had already seen so much old and new, domestic and foreign, live action and animated, short and long, was really a profound and sobering experience. They're literally four of my Top 5 series.

The sense of retroactive nostalgia they imbue is also ferociously potent.

Some other favorites from this period, which I'll extend to include 2006 (2000 - 2003 are early 2000s to me, 2004 - 2006 are mid-2000s, and 2007 - 2009 late 2000s; the same delineation goes for any other decade), are:

Ergo Proxy (2006), Elfen Lied (2004), Aishiteruze Baby (2004), The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2006), Gallery Fake (2005), Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World (2003), Digimon Tamers (2001), Earth Maiden Arjuna (2001), Gankutsuou (2004), Tenpou Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi (2006), Mujin Wakusei Survive (2003), Witch Hunter Robin (2002), Gungrave (2003), Black Lagoon (2006), Kokoro Toshokan (2001), Zettai Shounen (2005), Gakkou no Kaidan (2000), and NieA Under 7 (2000).

I got into anime around that time and a good number of my favorites come from those years. Everything did feel fresh and new because it was, at least to me. Some genres that I really like (e.g thriller) were more common then and in the second half of the the decade.

I also feel like productions took more risk with making original anime and a wider variety of themes and styles. 2004 is still one of the best years in anime ever.

The Industry was, seemingly, mainly still in the hands of of the Japanese Boomers and Gen-Xers back then...
and they brought a lot of personal life experience into their work that greatly enriched their creations
in ways that are sorely, abjectly missing from modern productions in general...
