2 things I hate(d):
-Him about to impale himself multiple times with that ice pick
-Alcohol

Even though alcohol both throws me off, and watching this makes me want to drink, I will keep watching. I love food porn and this is that but drink porn instead (which is bad for my (everyone's) health). People said this is apparently a remake. I like the twisting of words for bartender, and how he is focused on his hospitality craft/skills. Alcohol is always poison, but I like the thought of him making it medicine for his guests.

Ignoring the things I hated, I decide to give this a 5/5. Let's see how it goes moving forward, and if I can have zero alcohol the entire anime airing [tough].

They went a little overboard with this remake. I can see why they're modernizing the story to gather more of an audience, but as a consequence they're watering down that engaging atmosphere and informative storytelling the original anime had. Pretty much all of the characters are different as well; I might need to check the manga to really compare the adaptations, but this is so far unfortunately underwhelming.

Probably one of the anime I less expected to receive a remake. Bartender (2006) is actually among my favorites in the Iyashikei genre so seeing Ryuu and Miwa again, with today's visuals, feel almost surreal.

Very solid first episode. I remember the one from the original being even calmer but I think the studio still did a pretty decent job here regarding the overall vibes and atmosphere.

I expected nothing, and I'm still let down.

There's so much anime BS on the side of support cast that I don't know where to begin. The owner of the new building wants a bartender that can be a step ahead from the customer and pretty much babysit them rather than you know what any bartender do is to just serve them the drinks that they want. The owner or whoever is in charge of managing the lower staff also doesn't want to spend extra money to find this miraculous bartender that can serve a god drink. They rejected the hot guy that knew how to keep the ladies entertained. These are already big red flags of idiots that don't know how to run a business let alone a big corporation.

The amount of miraculous encounters from the scouting ladies with the bartender is more ridiculous than those in romance shows. And to top it all, some of the lines are cringy as fuck "there are only 2 professions that you must not deceive" it feels like it was written by a teen to impress other teens. Miwa's reaction to the highball served by the bartender was ridiculously excessive, it was just a freaking drink, he didn't find the cure for a deadly disease, nor cooked a meal that would make their clothes burst into nothing.

I'll keep watching a few more episodes, but my expectations are already below ground level.

  • Though it's written in Japanese, it's a proper site to read and see: Pousse-cafe style.
In case you don't like the language: Layered drink.
These sites say the cocktail is supposed to drink with a straw.
  • As for ice, I don't know what the protagonist told is correct or not. Ice is quite deep. Once I saw ice spike in the fridge and was amazed.
  • If the profiling skill is used often in the story, the show will be an interesting one.

Hoping this anime will be my chill anime of the season.
Episode one was so chill that I didn't even realise it had ended until the bubbles and ED singer started.

Was expecting Ryuu to at least get hired by the end of the first episode, instead he is staring at a different kind of bar(s)?

The last highball was so close to giving me Food Wars vibes, just needed clothes to explode off XD.
I guess anime can even make alcohol appealing.

Ryuu also seems like a very nice gentlemen, very attentive and a good listener.
His little speech about making alcohol medicine was interesting, because for some people it is, but in excess it is a deadly poison.

But what is with Miwa, Yukari and the Chief's boss? Why be so vague but also so specific?
Did he know exactly who he wanted to hire and hoped that they would find Ryuu?
I feel so sorry for the two women and the Chief.

Looking forward to episode two.

Really calm first episode. I like the drinks they made can really implicate the customers own state of existence. Ryuu got skill as a bartender and also knows each little details. I dun remember the original one but this one's not bad.

This season's going really hard with the remakes.
It appears as this one will less episodic ala Mushishi and have more of a plotline which is not a bad thing. Definitely an entertaining and 'feels-good' first episode.

"Bartender" holds a special place in my heart, transcending conventional anime tropes with its subtle charm and elegant simplicity. While it may not boast epic battles or fantastical powers, its allure lies in the art of mixology and the intricate stories woven around each drink.

Indeed, the concept of an anime centered around a bartender may initially elicit skepticism from the uninitiated. Yet, beneath the surface lies a rich tapestry of human experiences, with each patron of the bar bringing forth their own tale to be savored alongside their preferred libation.

The meticulous attention to detail in both the storytelling and animation is nothing short of a masterpiece, captivating the senses and stirring the soul with each carefully crafted episode. As I indulge in the contemplative ambiance of the bar, I find myself drawn into a world where every drink holds a story, and every visitor holds a piece of themselves to share.

It is my fervent wish that more discerning viewers will come to appreciate the understated brilliance of "Bartender" and join me in raising a glass to its timeless elegance. Perhaps one day, we shall gather in our own establishments, inspired by the spirit of Edenhall, to celebrate the enduring legacy of this beloved anime. Cheers to the journey ahead!

I really enjoyed the original but I'm not liking this as much so far. Main thing is no Leo Morimoto doing narration. And it seems much more trope-y. Maybe I just don't remember but it seems like there were all sorts of fillerish plot elements added. And the way they made the comparison between the guy who couldn't do the layered drink while Bartender could seemed like it was really hitting the viewer of the head. Maybe it's just obvious to me now that I'm rewatching though...

The biggest gripe I have is the MC in the original was much more mysterious, just a guy you slowly realize is awesome, although you do see his dorky/normal side as the series progresses, but here it's more like he's a normal guy who may be/become the greatest bartender in history, I guess I don't like the way they're hyping it up and making him more transparent.

I still enjoyed watching it and will keep on, but I'd still recommend watching the original first if this one caught your interest.

Any manga readers who can tell if this remake gonna be a good adaptation ? From what we see of this 1st episode of course.
@JaysonNnN Completed both first anime and manga long time ago here, and can tell the staff does put lots of efforts in this adaptation.

First anime was produced in 2006 and hence can only based on first six volumes of manga, which gave episodic vibe and (almost) none of them were directly nor indirectly related to Sasakura himself.

Referring to OP storyboard as well as characters listed on official site, this time is likely to focus on volume seven and afterwards (although the next episode's title is from volume five) which gradually reveals Sasakura's past and enhance his character development.

This episode is mainly based on chapter one of mange, with proper adjustments (e.g. change of phone, and replacing third interviewee to imply target customers of Hotel's bar, etc.) along with manga's Easter egg (the person who ordered Grasshopper from Sasakura actually got named in cast list and was the Bar Hopper in volume two.)

Don't quote me if original characters screw the plot though since he doesn't have cameo yet.

This line was in the PV too, and it irked me to no end. He's a guy that "tends" the "bar", not a tender guy... What does that make a guy who serves drinks at a rough saloon in the Wild West?

I don't think it's a nitpick at all, and I think it kind of gives away that the writer is just making stuff up to sound profound and sophisticated. I may be wrong, but I'm worried that this could be a sign of things to come.

The episode itself wasn't very impressive either, other than some beautiful shots of the drinks. The story premise and the characters felt a bit plain. But I'll come back for a few more episodes.

"If, when you push open the discreet but heavy door of the Edenhall, you hear the light sound of a piano as well as the gentle greetings of the bartender who works there, it most likely means that it's the Edenhall itself that has invited you there."

After almost 20 years since the 1st adaptation, and almost 5 years since I watched this latest version, I was delighted to be able to dive back into this charming iyashikei, which remains one of the works that has most affected me. To my great delight, this atmosphere has been preserved in this anime, which is much more faithful to the original manga.

This 1st episode was the perfect introduction for newcomers to this wonderful universe. This new version has everything that any good anime fan could wish for. Despite the youth of the Liber studio, we can only congratulate them on the visual quality they have brought to this anime. The art direction is truly exquisite. The OST's that accompany the various scenes are graceful and the animation is very pretty. But, and this is the 1st time I've said this, the sound quality is simply sumptuous. The various sound effects used, particularly during the scene in the Edenhall, were stunning.

I'm expecting a lot from this adaptation, and I hope it gets the popularity it deserves. Let's have faith in studio Liber. I can't wait to see the next episode.

I really loved this anime, and I don't even drink it!

I always saw these movies that had these bartenders making a more beautiful drink than the other and I thought it was cool.

It's not just shaking up the drink to and fro, it's a whole technique, a study.

I myself, as I do not drink, know almost no drink that was presented in this episode, but I found it very cool. For those who like this world, this anime is a full plate.

Soon, you'll have anime of everything!

I know there's a lot of fighting anime, romance, horror, but when I see an anime like that, unlike anything I've ever seen, it catches my eye.

I don't know if this anime will be successful, if it will be just one season or several, but I will watch it.

Pure unbridled comfy. I foresee a minor resurgence in professional bartenders with this anime. No one could resist the urge to get a perfect cocktail just once to see what it's like after watching this. There are people behind the bar and then there are those who can truly make any classy concoction known to man. When you reach the top level your cocktails become ambrosia, your job - liquid therapy.
I want to try something on this level just once IRL.

in love with how close-touching the gentleness is. no melodrama or plot oblivion like in earlier anime, instead, simply following a crew of people in the thick of just trying to do their job. i think this kind of real-life story telling is very stylish and modern (another good example being Journey To Bloom [also a whole series focused on project development])

I think this will be a different experience for new audiences compared to what's been released for the past couple years, which is nice and I'm glad the series gets another shot.

However as a fan of the original, I can't say I'm that happy. The added slice of life segments and slight gags kind of ruin the entire mystery atmosphere the original had. I don't particularly drink alcohol, but each episode took me on a journey and presented the story of each drink, as the main focus was weary customers doing soul searching and introspection in this mysterious bar they stumbled upon. Ryuu's "powers" as a bartender were nothing that flashy or dramatic and they always came from a very normal and logical standpoint, but awed his clients nonetheless. He was always presented as cool and composed, so it was intriguing when we were shown moments of weakness from him, as opposed to him being kind of a dork from the start. The remake seems to go towards more of a standard story with a bartender theme instead, which isn't bad! But it's not something that appeals to me as much. This is still only the first episode of course, so it still has plenty of time to pick itself up and improve, so I'll keep my eye on it.

Regardless if you enjoy the current one or not, I really recommend checking the original! The ending theme is very cool as not only does it give you the recipe for each drink but it also shows a real person making it!

I haven't seen the original Bartender anime but I wanted to check out this new seasonal because the concept looked interesting. Glad I did, I'm surprisingly really looking forward to next week. I think I will be keeping up with this one.

Was impressed by the art direction, not every day an anime has ranged shots of characters that are in full detail in clarity. Always up for a slower paced adult show that explores an interesting off the wall theme.
