Just to point out, I'm not writing this to badmouth anyone. I really don't judge anyone for having a taste. I love Frieren, and it has been one of my favorite shows ever. I wrote this purely for fun and I'm interested on how many share my dislike for this specific character.

Hello. I honestly hate Übel more than anything I have hated for a long time. I think she is rn something I hate more than taxes. I almost quit the anime, when I realized she was not a throwaway villain. I'm still almost puking from cringing when I watch parts with Übel. I don't care that people only like the character because of their dicks, but I just REALLY don't like characters that whose main character type is being "Idc.". The characters who do everything just for "lolz" and because they happen to be op as fuck. They fit as villains because I know they are going to get killed at some point and it gives me satisfaction.

Übel is epitome of every emo/angst/nihilist teenagers wet dream, and especially in anime, characters like this tend to get way too much screen time. This is because, all the mall ninjas who got stuck into their late teens LOVE them. And to be honest I don't really blame them and it is fine, everyone can like what they want. I just hope that Übel would get tortured to death.

If anyone is interested on why I hate this character type so much, here is why; When I was a teen and I was having my worst god complex phase, I would have loved Übel to smithereens and think that she would be so cool. Now as an adult, the only thing that annoys me more than myself, is the guy who is responsible for what I became. AKA Me 10 years ago.

@Zarutaku Mmhh.. Yeah. I don't usually get bothered enough about show characters to write rants about them, and even I found it funny how much she annoys me. I guess it has something to do with the general fibes of the show and how it changed alot during this act.

I found the earlier parts of the anime very fun, as it was so different comparing to other shows I often watch. All the smooth uplifting stuff. I think this mage trial act has been my least favourite by far, not that its bad or anything. Basically sociopath like Übel is really breaking my idyl, especially when its happening during the coldest part of the story by far ;d.

I was talking about the logic and not about reflecting on anything. Your likings based on someone else's likings, in this case, your past self. That's the childish thing.
In other words, you can't form your own opinion based on your own independent criteria.

What sexualization? Have you seen other anime that aired in the same season or in this season? You literally have semi-hentai "anime" and nobody bats an eye but when you have female chars in Frieren who are the least sexualized and don't have their tits or ass out being almost naked if not naked all the time, they somehow are still being sexualized.

I will take Ubel anytime instead of those half naked, made for hentai big tiddied girls.

I agree with you. I said the same on another post here on MAL, so I will be repeating myself. It is rare for me to hate an anime character (except for some rare exceptions that will not mention, otherwise the zealots of those characters will start a new thread). However, I share your disgust for Ubel.
While, as a psychopath, she has her place in the story, creating mayhem and putting other in a bad place, I am unable to like her characters from any other angle. For sure, her face is a big part of my dislike for her, because I can’t stand the (-.-) + smile face, hahaha.
Anyway, she is an annoying character for me. I only respect her place in terms of script, because she has a place in the storytelling. Aside from that, I hope that Frieren and Fern obliterate Ubel from the face of the planet, and Stark smashes the remains with his axe, haha.

Her know it all and arrogant personality is a bit annoying but follows a certain logic with her might so not that much of a problem to me.

Ubel is enigmatic. She's not 1 dimensional "hurr durr evil" character. We don't even know much about her to begin with. Yet, it's obvious something traumatic happened to her (and her sister most likely), hence why she's messed up in the head and so obsessed with cutting. She isn't OP either. She can be lethal against certain opponents, but that applies to other mages too.

For now what do we know? She killed bandits (in self-defense mind you, as Kraft said) and she accidentally killed the first class mage during test. Since Ubel wasn't prosecuted or even banned, it's obvious her action was deemed an accident at the end, or something that's "acceptable" (just like it's normal for test-takers to die during exams).

I honestly feel sorry for her. She's clearly suicidal as seen during her fight with Wirbel, as well as with her fight with own clone. I have strong suspicion she was forced to cut own sister, or maybe used her cutting magic on someone but killed her instead (maybe fault of bandits? that would explain why she was so merciless towards them) and that's why she's so messed up and not really afraid of getting killed (due to guilt maybe). She did say she's never been lucky too. Also, there's that moment when Fern says she knows see-through-clothes magic and Ubel crouches. By one glance she shouldn't be a type of person who gets embarrassed so easily. I suspect she's hiding scars or something. Found that reaction bit weird.

In other words, I sense she's complex, mysterious and highly likely a very tragic character. I can't really hate her for something as simplistic as "she has those eyes" and "she smiles all the time" and "she should be a villain due to vibes". For all we know, her smile may be her defense mechanism and she's acting all cold-hearted and "edgy" so that others don't realize how fragile and traumatized she really is.

I just hope you actually do an adult thing and overcome your childish hatred. Hating her more than taxes, really? :D

I mean certain character tropes and types really tick each of us off. When I despise a character I try to understand WHY I despise it - because that's usually something that indicates something about ourselves. And if you hate your self of 10 years ago, maybe it would be a good idea to embrace it and accept you wouldn't be the person you are today if you haven't gone through that phase, for better or for worse.

By saying you hate Ubel (or any character) you're basically saying you hate a part of yourself. And that goes for anyone when each of us HATES something to death - be it fictional or tangible. So I hope you eventually embrace your past, cuz thats also part of being "an adult" :)

Übel is a great example that not every mage is good. Clearly she isn’t some villain or else she wouldn’t be wasting her time with the first class mage exam. She clearly has underlying motives that are never expressed in the show. She is surely a complex character, perhaps even an example of a character with autism. Sure she dose not value human life, so what? She clearly has her own motives for doing what she is doing, perhaps in season two we will find out more about her character and better understanding why she is the way she is. We do know she had a sister and seeing as it was the first thing she mentioned when questioned by Sense I would wager she puts a great deal of stock into her family or at least did at one point.

I dislike her mainly for her stupid magic that breaks the magic system and makes some previous scenes ilogical, the character itself is meh and I can't understand what's her appeal, she isn't even that attractive, even Kanne and Lawine were more attractive than her.
