@ElmoBoredAsf Serie said she'll give Frieren a chance and to tell her favorite spell, then ridiculed it and told her she failed. But looking at it as a whole, the point there was to test if Frieren would stand her ground.
Frieren failed because she accepted that she failed before the test even started.
Serie loves potential and thinks Frieren is wasting hers. Fern had too much potential to overlook
@watsym I agree, and adding to that, Frieren‘s a hippie who collects spells as a hobby until Himmel urges her to start the adventure. Frieren’s lack of ambition to better herself through power led to her failure. Frieren didn’t pass because she already had the preconceived notion that she would fail, and she didn’t want the title either. During the test, Frieren admitted that Serie’s intuition is always right, showing she trusts her judgment. This suggests that Serie’s evaluations are trustworthy and based on an understanding of each candidate’s abilities. Additionally, the exam measures mages by Serie’s criteria as she oversees the organization. So, Frieren’s failure to meet these standards can be attributed to her lack of ambition in Serie’s eyes and her readiness to exceed Serie’s expectations of her.

Fern exceeded her expectations and has too much potential to fail, whereas Frieren lacks the ambition to become a 1st class mage. Serie deliberately tries to provoke Frieren, testing her reaction childishly but allowing Frieren to stand up or argue against Serie’s mockery, which could have shown her resolve in her beliefs. Instead, Frieren accepted her failure and left, only stating why the spell was important to her instead of arguing against Serie’s authority or being resolute with her worldview. If Frieren wanted to be a 1st class mage, she would have stood her ground and shown resilience and determination to try and challenge Serie’s philosophy instead of agreeing to disagree, like Serie even allows Sense to be a 1st class mage even with the complete opposite world view, so through actions such as an argument or by exceeding Serie’s expectations of Frieren herself as an apathetic elf who wastes their potential learning “useless” spells instead of honing her strength at every opportunity. If Frieren showed eagerness to improve and a desire to excel, possibly by expressing readiness to learn a new spell from Serie finally, she would have passed. So far, lacking the determination, confidence, courage, and resilience to challenge Serie has led to failure.

@postblitz I don't exactly agree, sure the source material is very solid but I think you should not underestimate how hard it is to adaptate a manga into an anime. I have seen too much good manga ruined in their anime version that I think Madhouse deserve huge credit for adapting this manga faithfully.
@33orion77 I haven't seen too many GOOD manga ruined in the anime but I have seen plenty of great manga get great anime. Great manga getting turds are rare and tragic like Berserk's newer adaptation.

@Alepercy
If you both want an example of an adaptation that surpasses this one you don't even need 10 years lol, Dungeon Meshi easily fits the bill. Others from this season that are very good adaptations - albeit of lesser quality stories - are Kekkon Yubiwa Monogatari, Dosanko Gal, Mahou Soujo Ni Akogarete, Solo Leveling, Mato Seihei no Slave, Sokushi Cheat.

If you want masterpieces Vinland Saga was not that long ago. Kimetsu no Yaiba just keeps delivering. I could go on and on and on.

I get that you enjoy the manga and the anime a lot but I stand by my comment and certainly not out of ignorance, I assure you. Of course it takes effort to make anime but they all do. Making the story, design and characters work well and have people interested and immersed is a much larger order that all the effort in the world cannot compensate. The Frieren manga was a standout from the start and still is for people who enjoy a slow burn. It's not even above critique since plenty consider
dragged on and I personally dislike the flippant Himmel-related tearjerk from Frieren. To each their taste, mine included.

Imagine living over 1000 years, traveling a lot, meeting all sorts of people, but not getting why some humans are getting attached to certain items (even if said items are objectively not worth a lot in gold). Yes, Frieren is dense as heck. If not Flamme's training, she would have died shortly after her village got attacked.

So many people failed the exam, including Frieren. Several contestants are still to have a little chatting with Serie. I wonder who will pass it. I hope Denken manages to make it. He deserves the title.

One episode left. Everything should be clear soon.

Serie doesn't always proctor.
There are other 1st class mages that passed but can't see serie's mana fluctuations.
The bar to pass is random decided by whatever random bs task the proctor gives you, like the long hair girl test, letting unqualified pass.

no structure to the exam with clear goals and/or skill needed. If luck or tagging along is viable to pass then its bs.
@Aapjuh the condition to pass is not being able to see her fluctuations. it's whether or not Serie judges them to have a talent for magic / if she likes their view on magic. next episode this will be made more clear with the rest of the interviews. granted, if you're able to see her fluctuations, you automatically pass because that just shows how talented you are, but that's not the condition to pass.

That was nice of Frieren to actually go through with repairing Fern's staff. Though I am not quite sure how her emotions work. She clearly has emotions just she behaves different from the average human.

Serie definitely has an unlikable personality. Didn't even have a change of heart from Frieren giving a pretty valid practicality for a spell that seems impractical.
@traed not everyone has great taste so a lot of people won't be able to appreciate the GOAT Serie. it's a shame but that's expected.

The character depth in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is among the top 99% in all of anime, brilliantly conveying beliefs, ego, and feelings through the voice acting, music, and animation. The dynamic between Frieren and Serie is really unspoken, yet it felt like I understood everything just by the way they played off each other. Frieren accepts who Serie is, but not the other way around, which is just sublime.

In just one episode, Serie's beliefs were challenged by having to accept Fern as a Rank 1 mage, meaning her character deepens even more. This sets up a way to even start liking a character like Serie, as unrelatable as she may seem. 10 out of 10 for me.
@Pixels72 how exactly serie's beliefs were challenged? Serie ALWAYS valued talent above anything else. The reason why she didn't want magic to spread to all people in the first place is because she wanted it to remain special and only people with talent should be able to use it. It makes total sense why she passed Fern, none of her beliefs were challenged. Serie never had anything against humans and she certainly never underestimated them. Remember, it was SERIE who said over a thousand years ago to frieren that the era of humans would arrive and that humans would overtake the elves...

To make you doesn’t feel bad about Frieren failing the exam. Her gaining that title is not necessary. Frieren achieve a feat Serie will never be able to get. Which is defeating a Demon Lord. You can’t EVER imagine Serie the egoistical mage are capable of doing teamwork to beat the Demon Lord.
@Unoriginality Serie couldn't defeat the demon king because she can't imagine herself living in peace, this was already explained. Congrats to Frieren for achieving that feat along with her party but don't speak ill of Serie. Serie can do whatever she wants because she has the power to back that up (since she's the strongest mage in the world) and she's the leader AND founder of the organization.

I LOVE THISSSSSSSSS. Prolly another 10/10 ep. And only one more episode till it all ends for a year as the producers would want to milk all the manga sales they can before releasing a new season i think.
But i dont understand still what type of mage Serie wants Frieren to be, further more the fact Fern saw a fluctuation means that she is also concealing her mana and as per that old first class mages observation her concealed manna is the amount similar to Frierens unconcealed. Prolly gonna look into it too see if its true. Funny af how Serie said she will never take a human student and then meets Fern Lmaoo.
Cant wait for the last ep ee.
@ElmoBoredAsf yes, Frieren's total mana = Serie's restricted mana. that's how insanely powerful Serie is and how much more mana than Frieren she actually has

Also answering your question, Serie wants Frieren to be a mage who seeks to be stronger, a mage who views magic as a tool for battle, that's the kind of mage Serie wants her to be.

i wonder...just a little..if Serie's magical instability is not of her suppressing her power but of her power starting to wane off?
would make for an interesting twist?
@gawed no, it's not because of that. it was explained in the past by Aura and was explained again in this episode that instability is what happens when someone is suppressing their mana. we haven't been giving any other reason for why instability happens.

it's also been established that your mana grows according to the time you spent training, and since Serie is WAY older than Frieren, it makes perfect sense and it's only logical and her mana is way bigger.

there's also no reason for Serie's power to be waning off when she's still in peak shape.

I dislike Serie. She failed Frieren despite the fact that she's probably the second-greatest mage alive right now, right behind Serie herself. She failed her because she doesn't like the kind of mage she is.

But I love the focus on Fern this episode, and how she heralds the Era of Humans. Fern at once saw through Serie's mana suppression. But of course our Fern stays loyal to her Master who's been teaching her since she was a child. Fern is truly incredible. She's nowhere near Frieren yet, but she's probably on track to become the greatest human mage since Flamme.

I can't believe this show is ending next episode ;-;

I like how this third test required no damn time and straight to hell in a ridiculous manner since Serie makes them all failed because no other mage than Serie herself to proctored the test. Except Fern at the end since she's the true goat, or maybe Denken manage as well with the power of jijii, perhaps? Since his time still not added yet, but yeah, that's it for this episode.

Half pouting Fern in a great view with Stark finally on screen, and then half confident Fern crushing Serie belief toward the era of human, still never die.

Also the reminiscing part this time actually the best one with Himmel finally said the reason why he's recruiting Frieren. That's beautiful spell. A spell to create the field of flower, the useless one, united them all and brings peace upon humanity.

A truly an era of human indeed....

im a bit confused. her mana is fluctuating so she is concealing it but exactlty how much? is she like 10 times more powerful than what she shows or is she barely concealing it as a test to others if they can notice it like fern did as the first one ever.

i love that fern denied the yellow haired elf's proposal. she really cares for frieren :3

Serie makes every scene she's in so freakin' tense! I do feel some empathy for her in that it must be hard to see promising students die so "quickly," but I do wish she would chill somewhat. I find it interesting that she conceals her man, too. Love that Fern saw through that.

This episode was one hell of a roller coster, I can't even begin to describe my feelings at this point. The era of humans huh, It's great and scary, it promises a lot but I dislike it as the era of all the others like Frieren and Serie has been gone far long ago and it's heart-wrenching to see all that. I hate how frieren being able to live such a long life, This fact does not always compliment her or always keep her at the top among the best, here her student Fern has shown to be far more promising to Serie than Frieren herself. No matter how much I liked this thing about the anime about being unique and not afraid to do something different like taking away the spotlight of the mc for her student, I still love Frieren, some part of my heart aches for her to have passed and for her to be the best forever but it'd make the anime no different than other still I guess somewhere deep in my mind I'll always kinda wish that you know.

I really liked seeing Frieren putting Fern's stick on repair to clear the argument but without clearly seeing it and showing her feelings. The interviews with Serie were tough as expected, she only accepted Fern. That "useless" flower spell is the one who united Frieren with Himel in the end.

I'm glad that Fern's stick was able to be repaired. Sentimentality is a very powerful thing.

Only Fern passed. Interesting. Frieren definitely has the ability, but Serie doesn't really like her, but Fern is really something special, and has learned so much, in significantly less time than Frieren has spent.

One more episode left. What will happen?
