What is your attitude towards remakes, especially in context?

It was recently confirmed that the new Spice and Wolf will indeed be a remake of the original show. Perhaps with a full adaptation this time. So I want to ask people how they feel about the remakes, especially those who claim to replace the original anime. Are you ready to accept this if you loved the original anime, or is this where your acquaintance with the work will begin?

Most people prefer what they have seen first. I don't care about LoGH remakes, but I liked Bastard 2022 remake without seeing the original.

I'm totally ok with remakes. LoGH, HxH and Trigun remakes are all more or less on the same level as the originals to me. Especially regarding the first two I don't really understand those who believe that the originals are drastically better (a slight preference for the originals is understandable).

Spice and Wolf is one of the anime I dropped after one episode that I wanted to try again, but since a supposedly more faithful remake is coming out, I might wait for that.

I always give remakes a fair chance and go into them with an open mind, but I've still never seen one that I enjoyed as much as (or more than) the original.

One of the above comments makes a good point about preferring whichever you've seen first. Many people don't like remakes of series they've seen the original of, but if your first experience with it is the remake, you may have fonder memories of it instead.
What have you done today to deserve your eyes?

I like remakes. If it's the same or better than the original, then I got to to enjoy a new interpretation of something I probably already liked, or maybe something I'd never seen before. If it's worse, then I still have the original. It isn't gone or replaced at all, I can still watch it in exactly the same way I could if the remake didn't exist. I don't see a real drawback, other than maybe the fact that the money used to produce the remake could have been used to make something new.

I haven't seen Spice and Wolf since it aired, and my memory of it is pretty much nothing at this point. So if this wasn't a remake, I probably wouldn't watch it.

"What is your attitude towards remakes"

There can be good remakes like Urusei Yatsura (2022), Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 and Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Die Neue These...not that those became as popular as the originals. Stuff like FMA:B, HxH (2011) and Fruits Basket (2019) even became pretty big...not that I liked those.

Most of the remakes are kind of meh, tho. Which is showing how the industry is trying to milk the nostalgic fans with zero ambition to actuality revive those franchisees.

"especially in context?"

Never liked Spice and Wolf. Aside from the copy -> past info from the history books how the monetary system worked in the Middle Ages, nothing for me in it.
Same thing with Trigun and Rurouni Kenshin, I am indifferent to their remakes.

Remakes are usually shallower. this comes with time, but man, are they afraid of taking risks these days.

I liked a HxH remake a lot tho. And I think spice and wolf does need one after 15 years. Otherwise it'll probably flop

I loved the original Spice and Wolf, so I want to see how are they going to improve it.

But to answer the question, some stories are worth to be retold. Quite often anime adaptations are incomple or change the source too much, though it's not like I care as a mostly anime-only. If I enjoyed the story, like with Soul Eater, I don't care about how much the different it is. If it gets a remake, then great. I like seeing more of my favorites.

The industry has evolved, so maybe with a new try they can actually do a proper adaptation. Only time I dislike these kind of remakes, when the new adaptation suffers in some aspect to the original. For example, I have yet to see original Orphen, but I can tell that the new version looks much worse style vise, even if they improved something else. Why remake a show, if you will still end up slacking in other aspects?

problem is that back then original titles were  made with the purpose to become popular and successful in ratings. And indeed many reached ratings modern anime could only dream of

But their remakes are never produced with the purpose to replace the more modern anime productions in ratings.

As long as the remake is well written, has decent animation, and is just another way to watch said show and not act as a replacement, then it's fine by me. For example, I loved the new Urusei Yatsura's first cour so if they keep that sort of quality up then I'll be very happy.

It's as the first respondent, Tiosar, said. My attitude toward them is that if I'm already happy and satisfied with the original iteration then I have no interest in watching them and don't do so. Generally, for that reason, all the remakes I have seen (and this applies to both anime and non-anime/media in general), fall into one of two categories.

Either:

A) Ones which I was not pleased with and think the original was poorly handled and so much more and better could have been done with it

or

B) Ones which I watched before the original, which also usually entails watching before knowing about the original's existence, since I'll usually choose the original if I know about the existence of multiple versions

The latter one really more applies to live action films and such more than anime, as I didn't start watching anime until I was already fully conscious and cognizant of such things and heavily using the internet, so everything I choose to watch I could look up and research beforehand, whereas as a young kid I watched some films that, say, came out in the 80s or 90s and were remakes of something from decades earlier, but I didn't know about the originals at the time of watching.

I did watch some anime which were remakes (or could be technically argued to be "re-adaptations") though while being fully aware of the original's existence, such as the Fruits Basket 2019 remake/reboot/re-adaptation, Night Head 2041, etc. In those rarer instances, the situation is reversed, and now I have no desire, interest, or plan to watch the original series instead. Especially in cases like Fruits Basket where the major difference one can glean from reading the information about both of them is that the original one is incomplete. So honestly why bother watching it unless I really run out of other stuff to watch?

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu is one of my highest-rated series and in my Top 20, and I have absolutely no desire or intention to bother with the remake.

And whenever I hear about the announcement of a new anime project related to an anime I enjoyed enough to rate at least a 7/10 or above, or especially one of my favorites, my attitude and stance toward it is that I may check it out if it's a new season or sequel series, or even something else like an OVA/ONA special/bonus content/fanservice, side story, prequel, etc., but if it's just a remake or re-adaptation, then hard pass.

If the series in question didn't get a full adaptation during its original airing/ release due to its source material still being ongoing at the time, I'm open to the development of any remakes for it. Just comes down to how the adaptation gets handled.

I'm a fan of remakes. It lets a new audience experience a great story, plus it gives the opportunity to just adapt the story better and truer to the source material. And they usually look better!

The new Shaman King has worse animation than the original show, while Urusai Yatsura makes the story much easier to sell to a modern audience. I wouldn't generalize so easily.

I'm waiting for a Yu Yu Hakusho remake for so long! That anime needs to get the 21st century treatment.

Im rather indifferent. Some need/deserve it more than others though. In 2D series its not really that important production-wise but if it enhances the narrative than go for it.

DearS, Hand Maid May and UFO Robo Grendiser all deserve a remake.

Yes they waste their efforts on rather recent Spice and Wolf because of all the idiotic Holo fans, the people who clearly have shit taste in waifus.

I did not watch it back then and will not watch now.

Depends on the quality of the remake I suppose.

Personally, I would take issue if a remake ended up not only being a disappointment when compared to the previous adaptation/s, but overall being just plain terrible in most aspects.

Largely not necessary for people who already like the IP but it's important for bringing in new fans if that is your goal. Always wanted to see Sunrise finish Origin's adaption so we can bring in more fans to the UC timeline. Still UC Gundam is kinda the exception because it's still an ongoing story (Hathaway's Flash). Old complete adaptions usually I just don't see the point of a new adaption when we could just see a new manga all together adapted.

As for Spice and Wolf, it was an incomplete adaption so of course more would be good and ideally (otherwise I will be kinda ticked off) a complete adaption. If it needs a remake to bring in new fans so we can adapt the rest of the content out there great (I did also hear that Volume 4 which wasn't adapted is actually kinda important don't know never got around to the LNs).

It depends tbh. I'm not interested in Spice and Wolf, so I probably won't watch that specific remake, but if we could get a reboot/remake of Soul Eater that stays faithful to the manga this time, faithfully adapts the Baba Yaga Castle arc, and adapts the second half of the manga (the end of Baba Yaga Castle was basically the half-way point of the series), I'd be happy with that.

Remakes are not meant to be better than the originals. They are just their own thing.  So, I try to keep my expectations low but I won't deny I feel excited when ever I hear an announcement about a remake of my favourites such as Rurouni Kenshin.

Most of the time I prefer the originals over remakes. I like FMA(2003) than FMAB. Recently I watched remake of my favorite anime trigun but it was not hat good. Especially I have problem with the art style and the 3D animation.

Some remakes make me nostalgic and others make me wish that the ones I like the most should also get a remake..
But the change in voice acting roles is something that is not easy to overcome..

It also makes me sad that some of the voice actors and Manga artists are dead and they are not able to see their works in HD..

I highly doubt that. They would still be around if that was the case.

Not to mention there are many other girls with animal (mostly cat) years. May be you confuse her with them.

cat girls is something I very much like.

That reminds me of time when on nyash 2/3 jokes were about Haruhi and half of the remaining ones were abut FLCL

However world outside of nyash does not care about Haruhi or FLCL.

I like it when it can bring a new perspective of something or give a complete adaptation of an unfinished anime. However sometimes remakes don't feel all that necessary or don't do something that makes it worth watching over the original.
This post is brought to you by your local transfem gamer goblin. Will not tolerate bigotry and will fight against "anti-woke" sentiment to make the anime community a safer place.

I'm a bit neutral and try to be open minded. But I will say I hope they'll genuinely make it enjoyable and fun to watch and having their own thing instead of having it completely utter trash, soulless and lazy like the live action Disney remakes.

It was thanks to "Trigun Stampede", that I finally got around to watching the original anime. That's the case for A LOT of other shows as well.
The remakes inspire me to watch the original anime first, then the remake, so that I can have the best of both.

They're generally bad. Creative people usually have more interesting things in mind to do than make something which already exists, and I would rather watch an anime that's new to me than something I've already seen. But all rules have their exceptions. FMAB particularly stands out in that regard. And Kanon 2006.
