Have you see the 2016 berserk or the 2021 Ex-Arm anime? Those two fantasy and sceience fiction manga were ruined by their horredous anime adaptations.

Don't forget Ambassador Magma, a successful 60s tokusatsu that spawned a 90s anime.

Oh yeah that one too, a great tezuka manga ruined by the anime.

No. At least I can't think of a single one. Rosario + Vampire, for example, is a prime example of how not to adapt a manga, but the manga is still great.

Tsukihime and Persona 5 were greatly let down by their terrible anime adaptations.  Danganronpa series too.

I don't think anime can ruin an IP, even if it's bad it's still adds the source material and the IP itself
samidare anime was kinda bad but it doesn't matter in the whole scheme of things, in fact I read on mizukami's twitter that some people were going to read the manga because the anime was so bad

Jojo had much more in common with classic 80s battle shonen, but animé adaptations turned it into bizarre meme territory.
If those memes existed in the 90s-2000s, I would not have touched the manga, compared to HnK même "You are already dead" for example

Intellectual Property. In this context, OP probably meant source material for the anime.

Marvel has a bunch of anime that are apparently shit (haven't watched them yet but they're on netflix so I'll give them a go) but those IPs are so massive they can't be "ruined" by a bunch of crappy anime series.

Why didn't you use the term 'anime adaptition ruined the beloved source material' instead? Stupid Doug.

if you don't mean just a shitty adaptation and mean an anime that like, actually ruined the reputation of it's source material, I don't really know but there's a lot of stuff out there it's probably more than twice

first thing that came to mind was Tokyo Ghoul cause most people saw the anime, thought it was edgy and thought the manga was the same but a lot of people still hype up the Tokyo Ghoul manga so I don't know

Probably most anime adaptations of VN's. People watch anime adaptation > adaptation bad > people don't check out VN. Maybe anime adaptions of games too, but most anime fans know adaptations of games are always trash.

Toriko was considered a potential next big WSJ IP before the anime basically made it a laughing stock. Then of course there is the case of Chainsawman and the 1735.

It would be one thing if fans agree an adaptation is underwhelming (e.g. Dies Irae), but some of the worst anime I've seen have quite high scores. If I didn't like the anime everyone else likes, what hope do I have of liking the game? I actually HAVE played visual novels with middling adaptations, but only in those rare cases I can recognize the potential for quality.

Surprisingly, this is actually a good question, coming from you.

Yes, yes, it very much did. The Bungou to Alchemist: Shinpan no Haguruma anime is an affront brought to the original online game!

Back in the 2000s, Gonzo was the master of "ruining" classic works of Western theater and literature. I'll forever be disappointed that Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet doesn't have any flying horses or magic trees. And Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo really could've used some more spaceships and mecha fights.

Not just Western IPs, though; come to think of it, Kurosawa's Seven Samurai didn't even have a single flying battleship cut in half with a katana.

This is a really weird take to have on this matter. Because, like I said, anime adaptations of games, specifically JRPG's, factually suck and are not a good representation of what the game is actually like. The games they're adaptations of are generally pretty good.

I'm saying you're wrong, as a few anime are considered by fans to be just as good as their respective visual novels.
Plus, I've actually played some of these "good" games with "bad" adaptations. Such games are in fact terrible at times.

Tokyo Ghoul comes to mind. Thanks to the anime many dismissed the entire IP as edgy garbage with no substance to it. Granted, I do think that the manga can be quite edgy as well, but I think it's mostly well written edge with a purpose. I get that it's a meme at this point for people to say "the manga was better", but if there's ever been one IP that it applies to it's Tokyo Ghoul.

Haruhi S2 comes to mind, it almost killed the Haruhi franchise and fanbase, and led the novel to a 9-year hiatus (after a 4-year hiatus from 2007 to 2011).

Many anime that have a VN (especially otome VNs) as source material suffer from painfully boring and bland to downright horrendous "adaptations." Diabolik lovers that is nowdays knows as "the cringe vampire anime" originates from a dark otome visual novel that is not nearly as (in)famous as the anime. The novel and the anime writing are like day and night. It's still fairly popular in Japan after more than a decade, but it's sad so many people became familiar with it through that embarassment and stopped at that. Can't really blame them, but still, it's a lot more than vampire creeps harassing a religious girl to death.

If anything, I'm for once glad the Collar x Malice VN got a movie instea of an episodic anime.
