Ah yes they did it, the remove OS chip ending. Probably the most profound and thought-provoking one of them all.

I forgot how much I loved the soundtrack. I'm pretty sure not the only one who aimlessly wandered the City Ruins just to listen to the music.

At least, the adaptation is starting to differ from the original story. I like current level of attention to detail - even some TV frames were selected to have meaning in terms of whole NieR & Drakengard storyline.

I'm still laughing at "a letter from GOOD KID Taro Y. from Aichi". He is an absolute mad lad.

Makes me wonder why Machine Lifeforms decided to use English for their UI text even during very low level diagnostics (like a boot sequence). What's more interesting  it seems that they adapted use of arabic numerals, american date system (MM/DD/YYYY) AND Gregorian calendar. From the scene of the flower-bot's reboot we also know that the last-backup of the "Big Brother" has been done on
Which seems to fit in the NieRs timeline.

Is 2B's booting sequence kinda SUS?

I got a bit lost with the routes, but I think this episode didn't advance the plot as the game does.

Also, the machines at the end weren't chaning "this cannot continue" as they do in the game.

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a E02 mini Ribsview

+ Character desings are shining here
+ Better pacing, introduces more characters and worldbuilding
+ Great use of OST
- CGI still as poor, don't think it'll improve

Much better than E01!

I can say that this episode was great and an improvement over the first episode.

There was a lot of original scenes being used here and it was utilised very well. Seeing the story of the larger machine lifeform and how it found out on how to grow plants was lovely to watch over time. Not only that, but this segment used the city ruins OST from the game and it never fails to send chills down my back when I hear it play. Simply beautiful...

Same goes for the resistance members and their struggle against a rampaging mob of machines, who also killed the flower loving machine in the process, before 2B and 9S came to their rescue. It was well done and I enjoyed it. =)

The ED song and visuals are great. Amazarashi's vocals are still recognisable since I've been watching 86 Part 2 in my spare time and I enjoy listening to their OP play every episode, so seeing them to the ED for Nier Automata made me smile.

were people really bugged from the first ep? it was a decent adaptation of the opening act of the game. I bet the main criticism is the same cgi =bad durrrrrr

If they can keep mixing new quality content along with the original game adaptation and OST the series will be no doubt at least very good. Nice to see devola&popola so soon

Yo this episode was interesting wtf, from someone that never played the game, im really looking forward to discover more about the world and its characters.

Since the first ep was kinda the prologue of the game, for anyone that played the game, this episode was about the game as well, or are we seeing a different story?

I intend to play the game after the anime, don't spoil please, just want to know if they are actually making a different path from the game or not.

We're past all that when it comes to NieR. The storytelling, the build up, the soundtrack... NieR makes you think, instead of being passive and look at pretty graphics that you will forget at the next beautiful thing you see.
Episode 2 was great. I don't know who Lily is but it's already different from the game. So far so good.

A lot of anime fans are "sightseers". They only care about graphics. No matter the quality of the everything else, if anime is pretty it means it's good (cough KNY cough). And other way around, if graphics are subpar (and let's face it, Nier CGI is really bad), then they disregard anything else.

Well, I can only hope it'll be like with Golden Kamuy CGI bears. The rest of the story defended itself, despite atrocious CGI at the beginning and now people are mostly praising this show.

Lots of people are hating on the anime just because... CGI, or whatever. 7.52 isn't a bad score, it just looks bad because MAL has inflated values for Anime, something of which I am also guilty of.
However, when trash like Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute! is more highly rated than this one, especially after Episode 2 being IMHO a masterful episode, makes me question the sanity of the whole platform. Even IMDb has the NieR anime at a 7.9.

Oh my God yes, this episode was masterfully done. While the first episode was 100% faithful, this episode was mostly anime original, but they captured the feel of the game so nicely and it added so much to the atmosphere.

I loved the scenes with the machines so much, I am convinced now that the anime staff knows what they're doing, they know how important the soundtrack was too to the game, it's so nice to hear the City Ruins theme again. That's why I was saying that people should be patient, especially for a series like NieR.

Damn, my soul was destroyed when that flower machine died, but hey, that's what I am here for, let's go!

It was fucking cool as well how the characters from the side quests are making cameos.

I didn't really had the time or dedication to get into the stage plays, novels and such, so I am not really familiar with Lily. It's great that they're incorporating them into the anime, I hope they add all the important ones.

And again, the puppet play was hilarious, Yoko Taro was even mentioned lmao. They even straight up showed the menu screen to for the remove chip ending. Can't wait for the next episode, if it is what I think it is, then I really cannot wait.

Now we know the plot (or the root of it) and we have seen some new characters. But nothing more. I guess this episode is just a link in the chain of future events.

As someone who has not played NieR at all, I admit I was a bit lost with all this info being dumped on us, so hopefully there will be more clarity later on.

I doubt that they'll do that, so I'll just repeat it for you in a simple manner: Aliens attack earth using machines --> Humans escape to the moon and counter attack using sentient androids, the formal designation for this army is YoRHa --> a seemingly endless war breaks out --> Some androids decide to build resistances on earth and fight semi-independently from YoRHa, but still on the same side (like Lily's group)

The bits about the machines meeting a god and the like are not supposed to really make sense yet, so don't worry about understanding those too much.

The game is a practically a cheap wannabe Sophie's World plus some annoying tropes of Japanese videogames/anime. Don't expect something close to Rosseau, Hobbes, Locke, Kant or whichever you like here but apparently that was enough to be hailed as a masterpiece for some people.

As for me, this episode was mildly entertaining, at least if this anime fails to be good I guess it will be decent enough to sent Eve no Jikan to total oblivion since they try to convey some of their main topics. Composition in the ep was lacking in some scenes but those who know me already know I don't care too much about that, OST is nice though, 6.73/10.

Story: 10-Hmm, this is not a cliché, it deserves recognition.. The little robot saying "my brother" and him like a sieve gave me f, plus that robot dying at the end. Interesting that 9S is always more sentimental and 2B is always more serious, but in the end they were both created as androids, so I don't understand how that happens, maybe different software (no idea, I've never built a robot.-.)

Animation: 9.5 - cgi is still bad, but otherwise it's cool, the robot's movement was cool and it wasn't difficult like a doll, besides the line is beautiful <3

Music/sound: 10 - cool

Characters: 9 - I took a point because I don't like this boss, he doesn't give me a very good feeling, but other than that 9S and 2B are beautiful together and fun, although they appeared little this time. And the protagonist of the episode who was the robot bro, it was very good, it reminded me of that Disney movie "WALL-E"

Pleasure: 8.5 - I liked the robot, but I'd rather see the 9S and 2B haha

EP Rating: 9.4 - best rating for an excellent episode ^^

NOTE: Hope they explain more about these green-eyed, red-eyed robots

9S is a scanner model, he observes, gathers data, and hacks. Therefore he thinks and analyzes more, and due to his hacking ability, he also has some insight into the robot's "thinking" and "feeling" (though he thinks about it most of the time as junk, pure imitation, and software errors, it is still in the back of his mind) At the same time 2B is a battle android, a pure killing machine with one purpose. So obviously they have really different experiences and view the world differently. The red-eye green-eye is mostly a visual thing for us to have some insight into the "state of mind" of the robots, and that not all of them still mindlessly serve their original purpose without question and change, hundreds of years after the start of the war.

Golden Kamuy is a good comparison, even story wise. To be fair, GK gets a lot of praise for such an amazing display of Ainu culture. It takes time to deliver and NieR does it perfectly in terms of pacing. While the CGI is nothing revolutionary, it's only a few seconds. If that's what it takes to criticise the series, I guess we deserve a new generation full of people with the attention span of a goldfish.

Instead of an exact copy of the game's story like last episode, we actually get an anime original one like I'm trying to recall the events of the game on how 2B and 9S landed where its actually different. Resistance using mostly AKS-74Us even after 3000 years would make Brandon Herrera go crazy that AKs are still in use on that timeline.

I dunno if anyone else get the reference of the flowers but I could feel what they actually mean because I was playing Replicant. Makes me want to play Automata again after finishing my Replicant runs.
In the game they use StG-44s. Automata is full of direct WW2 references, so I have no idea why they made that change.

The music alone is reason enough to give this show a watch. It made me want to replay the game on steam. And that's a lot considering I'm addicted to WoW now.

I am not gonna speak a lot about the episodes because I have played the game and I might spoil little things here and there. But this second episode was very good. The green haired girl is a nice addition, I really want to see what's up with her in this adaptation.

Also gonna write the common: if you haven't played the game, it is time you do now. Go buy it.

Welp, guess this is an alternate take on the story, considering the co-existence of Lily and 2B & 9S which obviously makes this violently intriguing to see.

Hearing the original score obviously grabbed me by the throat and launched me against the nearest wall because it deserves all the praise it's ever gotten, I mean, I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I just couldn't stop myself from mentioning it lmao

Love the lil paper stories, always adored them in-game too, they never fail to be intriguing and eerie as hell.

I'm always a huge fan of seeing the twins just standing somewhere in the background, or doing something at all while having zero lines, seeing them just be in route A is somehow funny to me and I don't know why, so I liked seeing them here too.

But yeah, I do actually (and I'm surprising myself here) enjoy that this seems to be less of a faithful adaption as yet another 'route' so to speak, it just... it's on brand for the canon, really. It just works (for now, though I'm hopeful).

You'd think I'd mind the lengthy focus on the machine and its flowers situation but that just works for the canon as well to be honest, it was neat, it felt very much... Nier Automata, to put it this way.

And lastly, I'd literally watch 3496845065 episodes of 9S just... being, moving around this fluidly, interacting with 2B, like, you could probably get me to watch just about any alternate take so long as I get to see my lil boy, so, yknow.

tl;dr Let's put it this way, I liked the 2nd ep more than the first because now it's clear it's not trying to stick to the original story and the turn it's taking is an interesting alternate view, so, I'm down. I have more hope, now.

Kage no is a real trash and its score is unbelievably high, but it is actually really enjoyable (don't really understand why, I generally really hate trashy isekai harems and power fantasies, like Anos Voldigoad's anime, which is the peak for many as an enjoyable but trash show). Moreover, Nier's score will significantly improve if the later episodes will be at least on par with the second episode, but the first episode was really flawed on so many levels, so I understand, that its score is really deflated atm (considering the horrendous quality of shows with similar MAL score) due to disappointment.
Just look at One Punch Man S2 which was a huge letdown after S1, but its score is a joke if you actually compare the show to similarly rated ones, even S2 was significantly better than that rating objectively speaking, but disappointment generally deflates scores.
