Despite the AotD adaptation from MAPPA, massive marketing on the level almost never seen before for a new anime from both Shueisha and MAPPA, and holiday boost, Vol.13 of Chainsaw Man (which went on sale last week) only sold 284,558 copies in its first 5 days according to Oricon, which was down from Vol.11 which sold 328,038 copies in 4 days back in March 2021.

What went wrong? Isn't CSM supposed to be the next big thing like AoT/KnY/JJK? JJK Vol.15, which came out after the anime ended, sold more than a million copies in its first week despite having worse pre-anime sales than CSM while the latest volume of SxF sold 800k copies in its first week. Even MHA consistently sells 3-400k copies in its first week. Why does MAPPA's incredible revolutionary cinematic anime adaptation with 12 different EDs fail to bring in new readers? And how many people will actually show up at the 8k (x2) capacity theater MAPPA rented for day and night slot for the upcoming CSM anime exhibition?

Sales for other series for comparison

Yeah you are right, the anime was a failure. It failed to improve the manga sales whatsoever. I think it's primarily because CSM only got a 12 episode season. If it had gotten a 24 episode season than things would have been much different. Another reason I can think of for the low sales is that CSM was on a break for almost 2 years so that might have had an effect on its sales as well. The other mangas were constantly ongoing even before their anime while CSM was just coming out from a huge break.

CSM still sells decently though so I am happy Fujimoto is still making money atleast. He definitely deserves it.

Edit:- I just learnt that the manga became number 1 in this week's sales with over 640K sales so the anime might not have been a total failure. It did attract new viewers to read the manga. It just failed to attract as many as JJK or Demon Slayers anime did.

Didn't they just change the protagonist? This is obviously just the beginning of it.

Maybe if the anime was actually 24 episodes instead adapting the weakest parts of the manga and stopping at a very weird point............

some analysis from Erzat Blog

A rather interesting turn out for Chainsaw Man Volume 13, its latest volume after the end of its Anime broadcast. The 284,558 copies sold it had produced within its first 5 days is a jump of 21.64% against Volume 12 which made its debut at 233,928 copies in the first 6 days, but the newest volume is still rather far from the 328,038 copies sold for Volume 11 that was released back on March 4, 2021, in its first 4 days. Often times, after the end of an Anime broadcast, especially for series as highly anticipated as Chainsaw Man, we tend to observe a sharp rise in sales, such as Tokyo Revengers between Volume 22 and Volume 23, then Spy x Family between Volume 8 and Volume 9 (Volume 9 was officially released a day before its Anime). Do note that we still do not know Chainsaw Man’s performance digitally (particularly for volume sales, the overall digital segment has become a significant contributor to Shueisha’s income) and that Oricon is missing sales data from stores that are not participating in its daily sales surveys.

Was the Anime successful in stimulating sales of Chainsaw Man? Yes, all of its volumes are accounted for with all of them marking a rise week-on-week.

it's normal and I'm glad, part 2 is bad and shouldn't sell more than part 1, the fans didn't take the bat fortunately

Vol. 13 sold more than 283K in first 5 days that it ranked #1 in the top 50 best selling.
What's so bad or sad about that ?
All the volumes "pre anime" have boosted to reach over 1M copies sold for each
What's so bad or sad about that ?
Vol. 12 keeps on selling that it'd reach over 1M copies sold, surely.
What's so bad or sad about that ?
Maybe the anime didn't help much, but it did well as I see.
Didn't help much because it was slow and the stretched (though it gave different vibes than the manga) STILL, IT DID SO FINE.

Its still pretty strong but just not as strong as people hyped it to be. It might not reach the heights of Kny or Jjk or hell even Spy x Family but its still pretty good enough if we don't talk about the hype.
Also the reception for 2nd part isn't the best either.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

Well that's what you get when you overhype a 1-cour 12 episode adaptation when all the meat comes afterward.

I reckon the 2 year break is a huge reason why the manga doesn't sell as well anymore. Usually when an anime adaptation comes out, people go crazy on all the volumes that are out and there's usually a ton of volumes that succeed the anime. With CSM there wasn't any new volumes aside from volume 12 and 13 that came out recently so I guess most people who wanted to read the manga already bought all the volumes before the anime came out.

Kinda sad to see as a big CSM fan but oh well, the sales are still solid enough to not be worried about the series' future.

Personally I think to some degree sales for KnY and JJK were "inflated" by hype... For KnY no one expected this good anime (ep19) + from what I remember series was already ending or was close to ending. End of the series also generate additional hype. So you could say it was "perfect" adaptation made in "perfect" time.

Definitely it would be nice if someone who knows statistics could make detailed analysis of those data.

For JJK, I don't read it so I can't judge by what is happening there but I can imagine that some JJK fans were also buying volumes to "outsell" KnY... fans can be this petty.

For Spy x Family... this series is crazy good recently, not saying that previously was bad just since Loid's flashback we are in how I like to call it "author's villain arc".

I agree, also so many "people" are writing things like "(Black)Mid Clover sold so bad" and sh*t like that looking at sales became needless for me.
Series sold good? Will not be axed? that's enough for me.

Turns out, as a shocking surprise, MAPPA didnt create a good anime after all. 12eps was too short, the story barely went into motion. And a 2 year wait will kill hype.

I'm not too surprised, the adaption was good, not fantastic. Also it ended at a weird spot before the true good stuff happens. Anime like this should have a 21-26 episode adaption to leave a stronger impression. This isn't a slice of life romance where they can pick and choose any sweet moment to end on and fans will just eat it up.

The anime fucked up because it wasn't 24 eps
All the "boosts" happened in the 2nd cour of the season like kny's sun god dance in ep19 or jjk's hollow purple in ep20
But mappa had to rush and stop right at the point where csm started to pick pace

For real, I think that a shadow drop of the whole Season on Netflix may have actually worked better here.

Doesn’t really matter, the series is still going to be successful.
