I don't want to be a hater and I love studio orange, but vash looks like a character skin from fortnite, not someone who belongs in a bleak sci fi western. The flat lighting only makes things worse. I get he's supposed to be a bit goofy at times but he just looks so generic it's a damn shame. There was a certain grittiness to the design from the 99' anime, stemming mostly from strong contrasting colors and sharp lines that just doesn't come out at all in the new version.

Anyone else agree/disagree??

We always consider something to be bad, when a thing or two is changed about it. No matter how good the change looks.

You will definitely disagree with me... But that'd be me as well!! I disagree the new character design for Vash looks butchered. It looks more mordern and I think it fits him really well...

when i first saw him he looked like he belongs in a boy band or something but enough time has passed so i don't really mind anymore. ofc OG vash still looks better.

but even if they used the old design, i don't think it would hit the same anyway with that artstyle.

Not a big fan of the new design as well, just doesn't give off the same vibe.

Vash's original design worked well because it allowed him to appear friendly or menacing depending on what the situation demanded. The biggest issue with this redesign is that it makes him look too soft. The new haircut, bigger glasses, and modernized outfit all take away from his ability to be threatening, which prevents him from effectively (or at the very least, convincingly) using his reputation as the Humanoid Typhoon to his advantage.

this adaptation is secretly foreshadowing trigun x fortnite collab

It’s definitely the glasses. I don’t know why they didn’t go with smaller ones like the original.

It was a bit shocking at first… though the more time passed, the more it grew on me. It’s definitely very different from what we’ve always known, but since the new anime is not even a close readaptation of the manga, i think it’s fine.

Definitely agree with you on this; the classic 90s design allowed Vash to look aesthetically gritty while still leaving room for his more lighthearted moments that make the "Humanoid Typhoon" memorable. Meanwhile his modern day equivalent looks like a Butch at the local dive bar. Hopefully they can pull a Sonic movie on this and fix it a bit, but I'm not optimistic.

The new design threw me off at first, but I've actually grown to like it.

New character designs, new animation style, and apparently a new story. They're clearly not even attempting to re-do the old series and are going for something very different this time around. And y'know what? I'm fine with it. The first anime wasn't even very faithful to the manga, with only 4 episodes that are completely faithful to the manga and another 5 that are modified versions of the manga. The other 17 episodes are completely anime-original. Who's to say that another completely alternate take won't be just as good, or at least good for what it is?

I'm still holding out hope for a new adaptation that is completely faithful to the manga some day, and maybe that one will actually be 2D? But until then, I'm excited to see this alternate take.

Kinda have to agree tbh. As of right now, I'm not too sure. I reckon it has to do with the overall animation and CGI stuff.

they've really gone and changed a whole bunch of stuff, which isn't necessarily bad because the original show can still stand after all these years. so of course they'll go ahead and try something new and different, nothing they do will take away or be as good as the old stuff.
so i'll watch it without any of those weird expectations for it to make me feel like the original did.
i mean, it is a bit sad that there aren't many shows that hit that spot, it is after all a product of it's own time, where japanese media would use western inspiration along with their own essence to create fantastic settings and great characters. but even if that's not what this show does, it might have some value regardless. maybe it'll have good passing and character development, or it's just plain fun.
plus, the animation looks pretty great which already sold me on it a little bit, even if the new desings *are* a bit jarring.

so yeah that, don't be so bitter about it all, let's hope its good and if it isn't, hey, just another excuse to rewatch the original ;)

This show should have taken a note out of Urusei Yatsura 2022 on how to make old style art into modern animation.

Couldn't agree more. Demolished design, such a bdass dude turned into a kpop-bitch look-alike.

Overall animation and background design is great and good job for that but the charater designs with their soulless looking attitude just ruins it for me.

I will still prefer the old one as a huge fan of the OG anime, but now after seeing the EP1 and the new design in full motion it's actually a good "modernised" version of Vash.

But I will not forgive them for skipping on the Z-shaped glasses legs while doing a fully 3D CGI anime!

Overall the use of 3D character models does bother me a little, but I think I'll get over it. Something does seem off, maybe them appearing too flat due to the lighting. It causing a weird issue with my brain where the charters are separate from the world around them rather than a part of it.

From a character design standpoint Meryl's design bothers me a lot more than Vash for some reason.

It's not bad it's different. I LOOOVEE the 99' design a lot, and I do like it more than Stampede's BUT- Stampede's is good. Also Stampede's overall aesthetic is different not just Vash, I would treat it separate from the original 99' anime. It isn't going to be the same and I am fine with that, we still have the 99' anime to go back to.

Yeah. It's going to take some time to get used to the different vibe, style, and approach to things. The major reaction occurs is because it's different. Again, it's something to get use to and it's not that bad.

i will make a guess that by the end of the show Vash hair will go spiky again as a sign of some maturity or enlightenment that he achieves through his journey and battles

Yeah pretty much most hope for that to happen I think. There's a certain risk producers take when zoomerfying these classic series into today's "standards" and the reception would definitely get better if that's how the anime ends. Because Trigun isn't a small series, it's a huge IP in the west. As long as they're able to attract its original target audience then this will be a success.

Trigun Stampede all over the author's legacy, Ready, Steady, Roll? No, Ready, Steady Troll. Trololo lo lo lo lolo lo lo lol lo. Studio Orange is more of a traitor than Jeremiah Gottwald from Code Geass. They Replaced Milly with Robert De "Fucking" Niro.

^^ Integrating CD like this into the actual storytelling, better not be copium.

The original design is just so iconic, so it does make the new one look worse in comparison, but I don't necessarily mind. Pretty sure I'll just get used to it.

hmm. that... isn't vash

i'm going to watch it anyways because vash is one of the greatest anime characters of all time and trigun is one of the greatest anime stories of all time. but... wtf am i looking at?

i'm going to send it to my buddy who likes vash/trigun and just randomly ask him "do you know who this anime character is?" i'm 100% confident he won't recognize vash. which makes me sad

I guess the message of acceptance in the original anime completely gets thrown out of the window when Vash has a different design, it's not like they changed his personality or anything meaningful about his character. Punk had already become somewhat of a commodity in the 90's, so I wouldn't really say Vash's design had any real meaning back in it's day, It's a really nice design though.

I honestly don't mind, plus they pay homage to the old Vash, in the final episode, sort of. It's Meryl Stryfe's character design that pisses me off.

Well, different hairstyle rubbed me wrong way at the start, then I used to it. It reminds me David from "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners":
David Martinez

His mechanical arm I liked more in this version, but his hidden gun was replaced with some cable shooting gimmick.

So some pluses, some minuses.
