Not really. I may have started with 2000's anime, but I prefer 2010's. The further back you get, the less I like the artstyles. This is nothing against the shows themselves, I just don't find the older stuff visually appealing. I'd for sure choose 2000's over anything earlier though. |

Personally I have a soft spot for anime that aired in the mid-late 80s, stuff.like Ranma 1/2, Orange Road, Touch, etc. Each era had its own plus and minus in terms of art style, and there are absolutely gorgeous anime from all sorts of time periods. That said, while I really enjoyed some early 2000s anime like Eureka 7, if I had to choose I'd say the early 2000s are actually my least favorite overall in terms of style. I don't miss that Yu-Gi-Oh/Beyblade hair style at all. |

My favourite period is the 90's and early to mid 2000's with that 'purple feeling' from the gorgeous cell backgrounds (excluding mid 2000's onwards when anime went digital) with Yokohama Shopping Log my favourite example. Shows like Tenchi Muyo, Slayers and old but gold rom-coms like Girls Bravo, Magikano, Magicians Academy, Kemeko DX, Good Luck Ninomiya-kun, Haruka Nogizaka's Secret etc. I love the crazy mid 2000's rom-coms with their energy and silly shenanigans and it was the colourful artstyle and visual aesthetic that gives these shows much of their vibe. My favourite character designs come from the 80's and shows like Dirty Pair, City Hunter, Bubblegum Crisis and Cat's Eye. 80's women look so hot, Rui from Cat's Eye or Saeko from City Hunter being the best examples. |

That doesn't negate the fact that there where plenty of good anime that came out then, in fact one of.my favorite anime came out during this period. I'm just not the biggest fan of the way they generally animated certain things at that time. That's all. |

I do miss the old style of the past. What we have now is simply not as visually stunning and doesn't invoke emotions from its presentation in my opinion. |

I do and i'm aware that it's probably nostalgia because that's when i first got into anime. But i like it, it's still cute but it's not super cute like a lot of modern shows (Even serious, dark shows today have somewhat cute designs). |

It is not the art style, but the story. Art only got better since technology got better. However what is an excuse for stories to get worse? They ponder to mainstream? Agenda brainwashing? Old people in power are too afraid of Lelouch overthrowing them, so they banned everything they fear and replaced Lelouch with loyal lapdog Kanjiro? |

No, I don't have a personal connection to the early-mid 2000's anime artstyle. I don't have a preference for a certain era either, especially as reading this thread further proved to me that a single era can offer so many different looking artstyles. I'll just say that I appreciate the general look of all eras, whatever those may even be, from old school stuff to the modern stuff lol |

You don't even know how much I prefer such backgrounds to the computer-generated ones that prevail in today's series.[/quote] All those, are literally VN adaptations like I said. They were rare, maybe 2-4 a year. Also outside Air, which is another Key adaptation, none have designs so extreme as Clannad. I mean Shuffle and Clannad look very different. |

Yeah, I really like it. Sometimes when I find an older anime, and I see the lower res, and shitty sub font it just adds to the appeal. It was a mixed bag, but I think that was a part of the fun. Not everything needs to look perfect and shiny, for it to be good. |

yes. i miss it a lot. but i think the fact it is a thing of the past is also what makes it special.. it has a lot of ''nostalgia''(i dislike the word and don't know why really))value and it makes me extra happy when you find the bit of merch from a show with the dated ''old'''''' art style. the bug eyes are very endearing. they are cartoon characters, if they looked perfectly human would it really be as special? it adds a lot of character, stylistically i think it is awesome. i conclude |

If you mean by the most common artsyle of that era like most of original Sunrise shows then no. It wasn't bad but i didn't like it either. That said it still had A LOT of distinct ones eg: - Monster (or Naoki Urasawa) - InuYasha (Rumiko Takahashi) - Mind Game (Masaaki Yuasa) - Osamu Tezuka (Astro Boy, Metropolis, Black Jack TV, Hi no Tori etc) - CLAMP (Code Geass, xxxHolic) - FLCL & Diebuster - Satoshi Kon - Ergo Proxy - Mushishi - Cromartie High School - Yoshitoshi Abe (Haibane Renmei, Texhnolyze, Niea_7) - Air & Kanon (Clannad came out in 07 so i wouldn't call it mid-2000s) The list goes on and on. |

No, that era had lots of janky animations. Don;t ge me wrong, they were some anime’s with good animations, but most of them were not that good. Personally, I like how old anime looks like cowboy bepop, eva and YuYu Hakusho, i like how they look and the colors as well. People now only care about sakuga animayiond and dont care about anything else which really affected the anime industry and made only anime with high fluid animations be good. I mean just because an anime dos not have sakuga in one episode does not mean its bad. |

Quite an impressive collection it seems you have of Anime figurines that I always keep seeing you share pics of with the community. Even as detailed as those figurines are. I can't help but notice somethings about how they spend a massive amount of time to add so much detail to them, even going as far as adding elaborate lingerie. Yet looking beyond the fact that when women do wear garter belts to hold up stocking they would normally have the belts fold under their actual panties in real life. lol |

Well, as a anime fan since 2006, I've watched anime from many decades (like 2000's, 2010's, 90's, and even 80's). Anime from each decade have their own charm when it comes to character design, aesthetics, art design, color tone, background art, and lastly plots/narrative. I mean do I missed mid-late 2000's anime aesthetics and design? Of course I do!!! But guess what, I also love the 80's anime because of artsy and creative they were including character design. I mean don't tell me none of you appreciate the level of detail put into this anime: If you watch the whole thing, you can see a lot of work was put into this animation, and this is from 1985, this is when cel animation was still being used. Let me show you another piece of art, also from the 80's (1987 to be exact): Yep, this is from Robot Carnival, you see how beautiful this is. Yes, I became an anime fan in 2006, but I learned to appreciate art, and anime from 1980's has a beautiful art that you can't find anywhere close to this anymore. If you're both a current anime fan, and a art student, these 80's anime would leave a big impression on you. Do I missed 80's anime's design, & aesthetics?? Definitely, but I also missed 2000's anime too because of their art aesthetics too. I just watched a anime music video for the upcoming video game, Wanted: Dead, and guess what the animation used in that AMV is using mid-2000's anime aesthetics. I mean when I first watched this, I thought I was watching a relic from 2005-2009: When I first watched this AMV, I felt like I was 19 years old again (I'm 35 years old) watching a current anime in 2008. Watching that AMV using mid-late 2000's aesthetics brought back memory. I know I missed the artstyle, but I'm happy to see some animators doing a throwback to it and this AMV shows. I appreciate the animation studio that did the AMV for bringing back that artstyle. So, once in a while, an animation studio may use mid-late 2000's in a throwback kind of way like the Wanted: Dead AMV did, and I appreciate that. Does that mean that future animation could bring back 80's style motif animation for nostalgia, and throwback aesthetics for fun? I hope so. |

Mercury-Lamp said: Clannad's art style isn't representative of what anime in the mid-2000s looked like, it's just a style used by said title. You don't have to look too hard to find the ubiquitous style from that period either, just look at popular titles like Bleach, Naruto, Death Note, Code Geass, Fullmetal Alchemist and the like. Do I miss it, hmm... Today's look for most anime is too digitised, everything looks so artificial and I feel like a good amount of the creativity has been sucked out of it. Also, the character designs have become so homogeneous whilst earlier there was more variety. Sure, animation today is more detailed and cleaner but it's not as creative or innovative, it's like the artists working on them have been told to abandon all of their ideas and to just adapt to the established style. Of course there are animators who go against it, but they're a small percentage. It doesn't have any blood to it, so to speak. As for my personal favourite style, the mid-1990s-early 2000s one easily wins for me! Indeed, anime produced today looks too digitized and artificial. I prefer the art styles of early 2000s anime. |

I do miss 90s and early 2000s art, the more saturated colors looked good. Now many anime just look washed out. Also, that one notorious screenshot from earlier in the thread is kind of an unfair example. That anime (Kamichama Karin) was unusually ugly even for its time and was memed to hell when it came out. I'm sure I could cherry pick ugly frames from a modern anime but I wouldn't say they represent the whole of this decade's animation. |

I'm not picky about art styles really, but alot of anime has come out cheap looking like Shield Hero 2nd season and just recently that Yakuza husband show. Anyway since 2020 there's been company's who are really shitty with their animation production, but it is what it is. |

It's really hard to miss something unless it's completely taken away from you. For someone like me who grew up watching Anime from the 80s and 90s, I have still have yet to finish much Anime even from the 2000s that still interest me. If there is anything I really miss about Anime from early to mid 2000s it's how Anime is typically produced. Today you get your cookie cutter seasonal releases mostly with each episode exactly 23 minutes long lasting only around 12 episodes a season. Just about each new franchise is specifically produced for maximum appeal to as broad of a range of viewers as it possibly can. One Anime I have returned to watching again recently is "Full Metal Panic!". Other than it having the outdated aspect ratio of 4:3, it's really not that much different than Anime produced today. CGI is obviously being used more in Anime then it was back in early 2000s but this isn't always a bad thing either. OVA's and movies from that time were about the high quality art (more detailed) like the old school Guyver OVA's as another example, when compared to the later 2005 series which was an eyesore, but furthered the story. Happy belated New Year. |

One of the best anime loves stories I've ever seen. It's like Violet Evergarden, but reverse fXXked. It is a hentai. ![]() |

The visual novel, moeshit art style? Cute, but it didnt translate to animation well. Anime based on Key works were okay, but ones like Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi were definitely kind of ugly. The edgy D-Gray Man, Chrono Crusade sort of style slaps though |

SofiaBulga said: I voted Early-mid 2000s, but I just didn't like the fact that Black Lagoon's character design looked old. It didn't look old in the 2010s, so why the hell, does it look old now in the 2020s, that seriously pisses me off. It depends on your experience. If you watched "Black Lagoon" back when it originally aired it looked awesome because high fidelity has changed. 720 to 1080 resolution was still concidered state of the art back then. If you try watching the same Anime ripped from an old DVD copy over a remastered edition your opinion might change and the remastered would likely look no different than something released today. One reason why Users specifically who watch Anime only streaming who try to watch something released before their time complain about it looking like crap saying it's old is because they are watching an inferior copy. I visisted a few "questionabale" sites in the past where I have seen Anime streaming that was originally released back in the 80s and 90s. It's ussually something that has been either ripped from a VHS, LaserDisc, or an old DVD at no greater quality than 360 to 480. Most Anime from the 80s and 90s were never intended to be formatted digitally and just end up looking like crap streaming where it ussually will stutter during motion sequences when played. Experience drastictly changes when you are actually watching an offical hard copy of the Anime on either a VHS that is still in great condition to even a LazerDisc when you are looking at Anime before a certain time period. I basically don't even bother watching old or retro Anime on even offical streaming services unless it's been remastered. I will now only watch old or retro anime on an offical physical copy even if I have to hunt down a LaserDisc or VHS of it. 20-30 years from now kids might not even touch anime before the year 2020 because it's simply not in 16k resolution. |

Art wise current HD art is the best. It is screenwriting/story that leaves to be desired. Can we have a remaster of our 2000s favorites in modern HD art? Imagine how awesome would something like .hack//Sign, DearS or El Cazador de la Bruja look in modern HD art. Instead they do Demon Slayer about 30s of the bygone era. |
