Not counting first episodes of sequels, nor first episodes that you believe are way better when reflecting/rewatching the series later on than on first viewing. From the very first time you saw the series, which had your favorite first episode among all anime you've seen?

An example that a friend of mine gave when asking them this question was "To Your Eternity", and how much of an emotional journey that was while feeling like a great one-shot at the same time. The rest of the series didn't live up to their expectations after the first episode, but it's still an episode they remember well and love to this day.

The favourite first episode then? It's Steins;Gate for me.
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

It could just be favorite first episode from the get-go, but there are first episodes that I didn't care for at the start or found to be decent, that I liked a lot more afterwards whether it's with rewatching or just reflecting on them. That's why I added that elaboration. Steins;Gate had a decent first episode for me after rewatching it but when I first saw it, I was a bit indifferent and slightly bored. Luckily it became pretty good after.

I would say either Wonder Egg Priority or Link Click. The Wonder Egg one just kept me so confused and interested throughout its first ep and it probably left the greatest impression on me. Although if we are talking about the absolute best first ep I would probably say Link Click.

steins;gate: i don't care what anyone says, I was 100% hooked om this series from ep 1

the promised neverland: you know why this is here

mars red: I think more most people this is going to be good after a rewatch, but If you pay attention, which I did, it's godly from the very first time

attack on titan: it's a big reason for aot is the most popular anime on mal now

death parade and one punch man: these 2 just have extremely strong and well done hooks

Akame ga Kill still has the best 1st episode in my opinion, I really love the early shocking plot twist which made me so looking forward on the anime before :)

I remember watching Psycho Pass without reading the synopsis and immediately got hooked with the first episode. The song choice, the different camera shots of a gloomy, dark world making it distinctively memorable and intriguing, the introduction to the yin-yang comparisons of Makishima and Kogami from Akane's viewpoint as a narrator. It perfectly sets up on the later episodes which end up got me more captivated with the concept and narrative. It's still one of my fav eps i go back to.

Bakemonogatari is also a very good one. It left me with a very good impression on the story and especially with the characters that will be individually focused on each arc. This what led to buy the monogatari novels too. Thanks Senjougahara.

Just recently, I'm watching Shinsekai Yori and I absolutely loved the introduction to the first episode. The way the modern world is massacred and transitioned into a post-apocalyptic society felt terrifying, raw and authentic. It's kind of sad the Cast isn't taking to my liking rn.

Gakkougurashi (or School-Live!) is definitely a top contender for me. Watching that twist without any prior knowledge was amazing!

Vivy also has an amazing first episode to get the story started with a bang

I had a similar experience as your friend with To Your Eternity. As a short film, the first episode would be pretty much a 10/10, but then the story just got incredibly repetitive, constantly repeating the same cry-bait formula but without as much impact. I couldn't even finish it in the end

World Trigger season 2 episode 1. I was already a fan from season 1 and the manga, but the animation was a huge step up and it focused on a part of the manga I missed reading. It's cinematic, intense and fantastic.

If you count 2 part episodes, Darker than Black season 1 reels you right in with its dark and wild world of super powered assassins who are almost certainly different from any other people with super powers you have watched in an anime.

One Punch Man season 1 drew everyone in with it's first episode. You know exactly what you are going to get if you continue watching and all of it was glorious.

Drifters will get its hooks into you with episode 1 and never let go. Now if only we could get a season 2 at some point. Dorohedoro is in the same category.

Full Metal Panic: Invisible Victory has an incredible 1st episode. The first 4 episodes are great. The last 3 are great too. It's those other episodes that ruin the show.

Aside from the already-mentioned Vivy -Fluorite Eye's Song-, I'd say both Summertime Render and Non Non Biyori EP 1 made a strong first impression.

Dorohedoro. A Lizard head going around killing people. This doesn't perfectly describes it but it's quite bizzare and shocking on the first watch.

Not counting rewatches does change some perspectives. My pick is Link Click, some others are:

Chihayafuru
Kare Kano
Hellsing Ultimate
Fumetsu no Anata e (and I agree that the rest of the series isn't nearly as good as ep 1)

I've seen a decent amount of anime so far, and the best first episode i've ever seen is from To Your Eternity. I was quite moved when i first saw it, and i didn't even know at the time the creator is the same creator of A Silent Voice.

It's far and above any other first episode i've ever experienced. It's the only first episode, by itself, that i recommend to friends just because i want to know their experience from it, and to know they were able to experience it at all. It's the only anime i consistently look for reactions to of the first episode.

The first episode of KareKano is a masterpiece.

And watching the first episode of Haruhi, back when it was new and nobody knew what this thing was or had any expectations of it, what an experience that was!

I would probably say a lot of the new-gen shows started out hot. Odd taxi, To your eternity, Ousama ranking, just to name a few came out of the gate with banger first episodes that set the bar high. And at that point, it is just about whether or not they can keep dropping consistently good episodes, which they all did for the most part.

Quite the unpopular opinion. A lot of people say the first half of Steins; Gate is boring which I wholeheartedly disagree with. It is refreshing to see someone else who enjoyed the first few episodes.

One Piece has probably my favorite introduction for the Main Character out of any anime I've ever seen

Capeta was an anime that I new I was going to love based purely on the first episode.

Cromartie's first episode might be my favorite of the entire series--I can quote most of it based on my memory simply from how many times I've watched it.
