Kazuki Takahashi has sadly passed away from a snorkeling incident at the age of 60. As of now, not a lot of information has been confirmed. I hope his family is doing the best they can in this time.

As someone who was greatly influenced by the YuGiOh! franchise and loved every moment of the different anime and manga, I’d love to know everyone’s favorite moments from the show and even the manga here. The cards, films, video games, and other such experiences can be shared here too. I will always love this franchise so much.

As for me, I love revisiting the first two seasons of the DM anime and how peak the inclusion of the Egyptian God cards were to the story. I always believed the 5th season in it’s entirety, including the filler (which tbh most of this anime is) with the KC Grand Championship and Capsule Monsters (an excellent PS2 spinoff game btw) making up the first 1/3 of it, were super underrated and I loved how it all eventually tied up the loose ends of the show and made the Egyptian stories and such feel more complete. It was crazy seeing it all take place and even with the 4kids edits and dubbing felt extremely dark at times. Truly one of the greatest works of fiction I could have experienced growing up.

GX and 5Ds were the last of the series I’d watch and I think both have so much to offer. I think there’s much to be said about both of these shows and their manga too. Sometimes I even like them more than the DM anime. The GX manga for example being one of my favorite manga ever for how it changes the story, the characters, and goes more in depth in feeling like an actual anime that happens to target an older audience.

Thank you for sharing your moments here and thanks to Mr. Kazuki Takahasi for the wonderful memories!

I love mostly all the yugioh games. As for my fondest memories I loved the Zone arc of 5ds and the final dark arc of GX that never got dubbed. I got Yugioh Dark Duel Stories on my birthday from a relative as a kid which was awsome.

The games were so fun! It was really interesting how at the beginning, most of them didn’t play like how the actual card game does now, but they were experimenting and still figuring out the rules of how the card game would end up playing too lol. DDS is one I played a lot as a kid. It was so hard too lol. I still wish we could have gotten that final season of GX and final bit of 5Ds in English. I felt like they really ended off both shows rather flat and I had to scramble to find the Japanese versions of them both online to know everything that happened.

As for the anime, I loved season 0, the Pegasus arc, Battle City and Noah's. Stopped following the series after GX.

As for games, Forbidden Memories was quite fun. I would play for hours just to get that super rare card, like the red eyes or dark magician. I think the strongest card i was able to summon was the Red Eyes Black Meteor Dragon. Nightmare Troubadour was also fun.

one of my favorite shows from childhood, though it isn't a particular moment from the show, i remember going to the cinema for the movie when they had a promotion of giving away one of three cards (if memory serves it was the light pyramid, some cool version from the movie of the dark magician and a cool version of the blue eyed white dragon), i remember being mind blown by this promotion and loving the movie to death back then.

i loved both duel monsters and DX which were the parts of the franchise that i watched on tv in early elementary school and played the card game many years after watching it, i even had one buddy with whom i wasn't as close to as with the rest of my friends, but both of us were massive yu gi oh fans and so we would visit each other's houses every once in a while just to gush about it, make decks and play the game.

one of my worst childhood memories is losing a deck abroad on a vacation with my family, took it everywhere with me and somehow lost it in the Madame Tussauds museum in amsterdam or somewhere around there, still hurts to this day.

it always sucks to hear news like this and it's incredibly tragic for him and his family, especially considering how young he was and how out of nowhere it was, his work was a big and impactful part of my, my friends and so many other people's childhoods and lives, i wish the best for his loved ones and hope to remember and honor him moving forward.

Yu-Gi-Oh was one of my first ever anime together with Dragon Ball. I have very fond memories of it. I'm mostly familiar with the anime, the Duel Links video game, and the card game which I used to play with friends as a kid. I've never read the manga, nor have I ever been that curious about the Yu-Gi-Oh card game global tournaments.

When it comes to the anime, I don't think I can pick just one moment to call it my favorite, every arc was unique, every arc introduced new concepts, new characters, new badass scenes. But if I had to pick one scene from the anime that gave me goosebumps, and to this day it's still one of my favorite anime scenes of all time, that scene would have to be Kaiba sacrificing Obelisk for the Blue Eyes (aka his favorite waifu).

As a child I've had many awesome moments with my friends while playing the card game. So many laughs, heated arguments etc, and I always remember being so hyped to play the game whenever i had the chance. I also used to collect A LOT of cards. I swear at one point I had 4-5 full drawers full of thousands of Yu-Gi-Oh cards, a lot of kids back then, especially in my neighborhood were just as obsessed with it.

Takahashi-sensei will always remain as one of the most influential people in the anime and manga industry, and I can't thank him enough for making my childhood so incredible. Thank you! Rest in Peace legend!

I grew up with the original series, when it was brand new. I had to convince my mom that I needed the cards now, which was an uphill battle, since I was already invested into Pokemon, but eventually she caved, and bought be a pack of Metal Raiders. The rare was the Great Moth, which got me really excited, since I had just seen the episode where Weevil summoned it.

Yu-Gi-Oh collecting ended up taking over Pokemon TCG collecting for me. I bought most of the starter decks / structure decks when they came out, up until 2008, where I kind of fell out of it in high school. In 2013, I watched the entirety of the DM anime, as well as the Toei series, which reinvigorated my love of the series. I still hold it in high regard to this day.

It's a damn shame to hear about Takahashi's passing. His work certainly left a huge impact on me, and many others of my generation.

This ground is soiled by those before me and their lies. I dare not look up for on me I feel their eyes

I only got into Yu-Gi-Oh because it was popular. The inconsistent TV broadcast made it hard to keep up with, and I never liked it as much as Pokemon or Cardcaptors. My friends all quit after Battle City, and I dropped the classic series for good with the end of the Orichalcos arc.
I watched all of GX season 1 and I enjoyed it a lot more. But the TV schedule got in my way again, leading me to quit during season 2. I finally finished GX as an adult, but only the final 30 episodes were good enough to rival the first 52.

The only video game I had was a kid was World Championship Tournament 2004. I loved dueling my favorite characters with the REAL rules, but the card selection was pitiful. By the time I became a nostalgic adult, the card game no longer followed the same rules. I eventually emulated a couple of GX era games and played around with cool cards I had never seen before. I still hate that a bunch of the games' cards can't be used because they're "forbidden," even in single player.

Another one of my favorite memories is the Dungeon Dice Monsters arc. Duke Devlin is a much better character in the anime than in the manga! His game looked so much fun that I went out and bought the Dungeon Dice Monsters starter set as soon as they made one. I didn't have anyone willing to play it with me, unfortunately. I bought very few Dungeon Dice booster packs; they were annoying.

GX would have ended so much better if they had dubbed just 1 more episode. It would have been easy too, since that episode is a recap!

Hell, most of them weren't even based on the card game at all. There was an RPG/RTS style game and a chess style game and a few others.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

I remember an exploit I discovered in one of those games. The AI in that game never sets magic cards, which means playing "Anti-Spell Fragrance" leaves your opponents unable to ever activate magic cards.

Not necessarily my favourite memory, but one thats stuck in my head is that one guy from GX defeating his opponent in like 2 moves. Watching the final arc of the original series would probably be my favourite time watching the anime.

I still have my deck and all my favorite cards are kept safe because they still mean alot to me.

it was literally the show of my childhood and it really made me sad to hear the news of the creator passing away-
I'll always remember waking up before everyone during summer break just to catch on episodes that weren't even in order or would be repeated, but I didn't mind - I was just so fascinated with it
and of course, playing with friends with our fake cards always stays in memory as something nice to remember about school days

RIP. I was really shocked reading the news. One thing I can say about YGO, not necessarily about memories, but Kazuki Takahashi's artwork and style has been an inspiration to me and I fucking loved his style in manga. It is in my favs for a reason.

Regarding my memories of this franchise I grew up watching GX, DM was never dubbed in my mother tongue. I didn't play the tcg since the cards were in english and I didn't know the language. But I had a blast watching GX after school. Years later when they translated the manga I bought some volumes when my family was going for our traditional Easter holiday up in Lapland. I needed something to read for the train travel, and it really hooked me. Fast forward to high school I decided I want to understand the game and so I watched DM, and then I continued and I am still watching newer entries in the franchise and loving them.

Yo, season 3, with the Noah/virtual reality arc is lowkey gas! Very underrated.

I never got to play FM as I grew up with Nintendo consoles until the ps2. I love going back and watching playthroughs and speed runs of it and it’s so interesting see the art design of it and comparing it to how the show turned out.

Also I remember my mom used to be more religious and thought the cards were demonic, which always gave me a good laugh.

The movie was such an awesome experience. I was a little too young to ask and see the first Pokémon movie but when YuGiOh finally had a movie in the theaters everyone I knew was hyped and the theater was packed! I was so excited and got two cards (one for me and one for my mom) and I got the pyramid of light and the dark magician-type card while my friend got that Watapon (pink cloud puff monster lol) and my other friend got the blue eyes shining dragon card. I then found a group of kids who asked if I wanted to trade my magician for their dragon which I did and I was so hyped when I got to see all the cards on the big screen. Sometime shortly after all of this I got my hands on the magician and puff cards! During that era everything felt perfect in terms of friends, YuGiOh, and life.

I loved Gx and although some of my friends and stepbrother stopped watching or were not very into it, I loved it and my interest grew even more than I thought it ever could. They would still play YuGiOh though and everyone I was close to seemed to play it or give it a try just because I was so into it. I’d make so many decks that were based off the characters in the anime. Some were more accurate than others or only missing a few cards to perfect how they were in the anime and some I had to just improvise much of it outside some of the key cards they had haha (like, no way we’ve seen at least 40 non-anime exclusive cards from Alexis, Bakura, and Chumley lol). I didn’t follow after 5Ds but a few friends and I still played online and used XYZs cards. I was exiting high school around that time and was moving on to other interests. Good times tho.

I feel like a lot of us can relate to that struggle. I’ve lost and had stolen so many cards. I remember having a lot of really cool cards that were very new at the time and there were holographics, cards I only had a few or single copy of, and including video game promo cards in there just for them to get damaged from a water balloon fight at his birthday party. A lot were salvageable and could still be used to duel with but I set them down on the kitchen table, went back outside, came back, and they were gone. He told me he thinks his mom took them and thought they were his and put them away, but I don’t know if that was a lie or not… he then conveniently moved away and took my cards with him. Said he’d send them back to me and never did. Oh well. Another time I was 6 and it was my first pack of cards ever. The first rare I ever got was the left leg of exodia and I brought the pack to school with me and all the kids in my classes and all the older kids during lunch and after school and I even had kids ask me to trade or if I had enough to duel them with which I obviously didn’t want to do any of that bc I didn’t really know much about it all. Well, that same day I got all my cards stolen at different points with a 5 min span when my back was turned or set them in my bag for a minute when I had to leave and grab something or another. Tough times but essential times as a young duelist unfortunately 😭.

Really sad that this all happened but I hope we can all remember fondly the memories he created for us and that he’s resting peacefully.

Your qualms on the tv schedule and games are felt 😔. I remember having the starter set of DDM but whenever I went to shops and stores they never had any of the packs (at least none that were not already ripped up 😒). I swear it seemed like YuGiOh attracted more kids that would steal and break into packs compared to the kids who like Magic or Pokémon lol.

Rest in peace Kazuki Takahashi. I'll miss you but I'll always appreciate and love what you've created.

LETS DUEL!

This whole comment. I’ve felt all of this! The shonen jump magazines with the free rare limited edition cards, the tins, the other things.. I wish to experience it all for the first time again

I'll always be thankful his work led to that hilarious 4Kids dub. That and Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's, which gave me Aki Izayoi.

Also I remember my mom used to be more religious and thought the cards were demonic, which always gave me a good laugh.

Demonic… the plight of many children growing up in religious families 😭

Something like this,

As a watcher,
Yusei winning against the God's of Aesir.

That guy with the Loki deck was insane 💀

Now that i checked it,
Loki actually has the most interesting effect of all of them.
Spamming limited trap cards + a spellcaster at that.
Which means something like Diffusion Wave Motion becomes damn broken.

I mean, how are you supposed to beat 3 3k+ atk monsters in the field + they can even resurrect???
One is an automatic Zerofyne,
Another is a Synchro Shien, &
Another has Forbidden Lance buff.
As a player, plot armor for sure.
Luckily, those cards are hard to summon in real games/practice.
Since Nordic's actually suck when you try to use it.

Also i forgot about this one:

Yeah the Nordic cards could have had potential and could have made for a good, next generation of the God cards and Sacred Beast cards but they were too niche, not the most flexible to use/easy to summon, came at a time when 5Ds was slowing down in hype, and people already considered and like a lot more the Earthbound Immortals to be the next generation of God cards at the time, plus those were way cooler and easier to summon.

Also the link is broken or video is just unavailable 😭

If you want to play Nordics, its better to play just one of the God Cards & focus your deck around it.
My problem with Nordics is that they have specific tuners to be viable to summon & only Thor's support Beast monsters are the viable ones.(Nordic Alfar & Ascendant SUCKS!!!)(& Thor doesnt have a great effect either on its own.)(& ofc 4 cards instead of 3 for BOTTOMLESS TRAP HOLE.)

& sure,
Earthbound Immortals have better effects & have better support cards since you can use dark monster support cards on it,(& hence easier to summon??? still not sure about that.)
But other than that, only one of them on the field at any time which stalls the game pretty much.
+ it has Malefic Syndrome.(Which means more Terraforming, & preferably Mausoleum of the Emperor, which also means MST=bye-bye!!!)
The effects are decent but they have horrible protection because of their own effect + its own limitation.
They only work in a Speed Duel due to Speed World.

As a player who once played competitively, anything happening in the anime.
Stays in the anime.
I mean, Crow/Kalin can give Yusei a hard time more than any other character in the show if it were a real duel.

Also:

I did that too and I even had to play baseball in the morning and I’d always get in a bad attitude for having to go and miss YuGiOh by the time I got back home lol. Sometimes I’d record it with a blank VHS I had lying around since I still had my CRTV that still worked at the time well into the end of YuGiOh GX’s 4kids dub.

Man, I remember trying to play locals (I was 8 and around the time of the Water and Fire structure decks coming out) and getting my ass handed to me and it was then I realized, I need to get better. I never really got better lol and didn’t help I didn’t have the money to buy loads of cards, didn’t have the best synergy, and didn’t consider many meta strats anyway (I insisted running three pyramid of light and heavy storm/griffiths feather duster/emer. prov. was a good strat lol… I did use a gren maju de eiza deck before I remember it gained prominence haha I don’t know if that’a really the case but it’s all I had at the time).

Also, it’s so nostalgic watching 5Ds/synchro era YuGiOh. That was a time I really felt like I was understanding the meta a little better. And that clip was very satisfying haha

You did not play YuGiOh growing up if you weren’t making shit up as you went along 😂. Whether that was what you saw in the anime, made up yourself, or twisted the card rulings just to fit your narrative 😭 I always wished I had the entire vhs set of the first two seasons. I don’t remember seeing if they had anymore vhs tapes of the third season but I remember DVDs of the show’s third season once they were out of the virtual world. I replayed the Mario vs Yami duel so many times on my ps2 x crtv setup lol

^^Gren Maju/Macro Cosmos is a big deal of a deck/playstyle eversince, since its basically an anti meta deck.
In Yugioh, your graveyard is your 2nd deck.
Once thats empty, almost every meta deck cannot & will not work.
So atleast you did well using it as a kid, at that.
Pyramid of light???
uhmmm...whats that???
Sounds like a group of cult or an ancient group in the show, lol hahahahaha!!!!
The fact that i dunno shows how bad that card is if it somehow exists.
I can probably see some Harpies/Heavy Storm/Giant Trunade or some shit there in your deck.
Gryphon's Feather Duster/Emergency Provisions....uhmmmmm...why???
Thats an overkill, just one of em is enough.
Especially at that time.

Kids always put whatever cards they want in their deck.
Surprisingly enough, i didnt experience that since i played like a player eversince i was a kid.

5d's is probably my favorite show/meta since most of the characters has a deck that actually works!!!
(Yusei's Junk/Synchron deck is surprisingly very versatile even without Stardust Dragon & speaking about Stardust Dragon, It is a staple card in Synchro decks at that time. & OFC, A pure Quasar deck.)
(Crow Hogan's Blackwings has been a meta deck for years in the Synchro to the XYZ era.
Arguably the best deck in the entire cast of the show, Contested by Kallin Kessler's Infernity deck which is also a broken archetype in itself.)
(Besides probably Jack since....seriously i dunno how he managed to survive in the series that long...hahahaha!!!)
(Akiza has a decent plant type deck & surprisingly good support cards at that with Tytannial,Copy Plant, & Lonefire Blossom, etc. Also, Black Rose Dragon is a staple in most Synchro Decks. Ezly the best of all the signer dragons no doubt.)
(Luna has a stalling kinda an anti meta deck.)
(Leo has a very gimmicky Morphtronic deck. Equip card spammer.)
Not to mention, i love Yusei as a protagonist, Dude is too smart for his own good even if it means having many Synchro ass pulls himself.
So yeah!!!
Watching 5d's surprisingly teaches you about the meta a lot while it was airing.
I heard that the director of 5d's played competitively.
If thats true, then that explains a lot.
No wonder why i have fun watching it.

i wish i can do OTK against 3 players too!!!
Its just cool & badass at the same time!!!

Pyramid of light was a card from the original YuGiOh movie… it was really bad and slow… even back then lol. It was just a quick way to summon Theinen the Great Sphinx 😂.

I wasn’t into the meta or understood it much at all back then. I wasn’t truly paying attention to it until 5Ds. I used Infernity at that time on Dueling Network. I liked how most of the characters had decks that actually felt more competitive and it actually seemed like cards in the show were meta, like as you explain it. Now you’re getting me fired up to rewatch 5Ds again haha

Ahh!!! i remember the days of abusing Infernity Launcher & Infernity Archfiend back in Dueling Network when those cards were not banned.
(Cards like Goyo Guardian & Brionac, which the latter works so well with Infernity's strategy of empty hands, were not banned on that time either.)
EZ 10k rating per month in rank.
Due to ragequit or how damn OP it is.

I mean, just compare the 5d's main cast decks over other series' main cast decks.
& you can easily see it for yourself.
Same goes with the supporting characters.

Same, i want to rewatch it too, but i just dont have the time for it.

i remember waking up early just to play yugioh games. nowadays they don't animate the cards monster anymore unless you're playing the mobile game or the previous title would have better animation than recent title.

i admit that i felt out of touch once they introduce the synchro and so on after that. i hated the metamorphosis deck (deck that releases right after samurai deck) cause it took way too long to get my turn back. then i heard in recent pc title that it will take way, way longer to get your turn which is ridiculous cause you might get OTK before your turn.

the balance should be there, combo wombo wouldn't be fun if the wait is too long.

My favorite Yugioh moment is when they made a requirement that you have to shower before going to any Yugioh tournaments in the official tournament rule book.

It’s crazy how, as kids, we could read the card effects (some of us at least) but didn’t bother enforcing these effects when everyone has watched the show. Clearly Revival Jam can immediately return straight back from the graveyard and in to the field after an attack and you don’t have to pay life points (if we were even playing with any lol). Oh you have machine monsters? I’ll just activate Umi and flood the field, rusting your machines, thus making them attack fodder from any monster including my Kuriboh 😂.

There was rarely any discourse for these “rulings” too, at least from my experiences. We just wanted to have fun and feel like we were in the anime. Wasn’t until Battle City was airing on Cartoon Network (in the US) that everyone I knew started to play by the rules… for the most part (actual phases, 40-50 card decks, proper card readings, shuffling, but typically started at 4000, used god cards if you had them, likely traditional format (no banned cards), and likely to have 3 copies of any card (no limits on cards)).
