Does anyone else feel that whenever anime personally relates to some part of their daily lives (like focusing on music, tennis, or sudoku), it just becomes better in their eyes?

Of course, there are anime that do these things correctly and like... not. What I'm talking about is the baseline itself going up. Like the moment I see a show that's focused on or heavily involves astronomy or jazz or something, it shoots up an entire 0.5 in my mind compared to another show that might theoretically do all the same things, but not involve the same concept.

I do really like finding works that have Trains, Cryptozoology, Dinosaurs & Pro Wrestling - which are some of my interests/hobbies. So... yeah I do.

I increased my hate for Bunny Senpai when the girl talking theoritical physics/science crap at every arcs.

I like board games (to be exact chess), so yeah, i have rated all the related type anime like go and shogi very high. Other thing i like somewhat like table tennis too. so yeah i have rated Ping pong high too. But those shows are pretty good anyway, so its not like i have any complains

But overall its pretty limited to find anime based on my job/studies/hobbies/interests.

Probably, yeah. One of the many reasons why taste is incredibly subjective.

Series such as R.O.D, Non Non Biyori, Chunibyo, Death Note, Free!, Ayane SHIONOMIYA Never Makes an Error. or Three Days of Happiness each resonated with me on a personal level (some more-so than others), hence why I gave them all relatively high scores.

Maybe or maybe not. I am interested in geopolitics, history and similar stuff, so anime who do it well like AoT and Log Horizon are a notch above in my opinion.

But if you do it badly, I hate it and can't ignore it. For example, Arslan senki has so bad historical contexts and politics that I was feeling pain while watching it. So I put it on hold. So I hate it more, even when I dig that kinda story.

So all and all, if it's good, I'll like it, no matter the hobbies bias.

Anime was it's best 20000 years ago, when cavemen drew art with real depth.
Modern anime is all garbage. I miss great old days of anime.

Yeah, when anime tackle a subject I'm already familiar with it makes it more enjoyable. I have a real world counterpart to compare it to, and also I already enjoy that thing in real life so it makes sense that I would also enjoy seeing cute anime girls doing it.

In the general aspect of things no. For instance, having characters play basketball isn't going to help boost its value unless there's that rare chance it can capture a thrilling game. If it's something like a specific reference of something I enjoy (does not necessarily have to have it incorporated in the story) which is few, then yes, I'll have strong bias.

Ex:

Big props for the reference to Doom

perhaps, of course it doesn't mean that i'd always like anime relating to my interests. one example would be that I've been in band orchestra since middle school, which had me sometimes relate to the musicians in Hibike Euphonium... tho I didn't like the whole series too much. I also remember watching Koisuru Asteroid, which had a geology + astronomy combo, which was very nice.

now that i think of it, it would be cool to see an archaeology-focused anime

Yes of course I'd love to watch anime that revolves around any field in computer science and I also like science in general but because of it I simply can't seem to enjoy anime that throws around random words to look intellectual or mashes up science with some magic to come up with some pseudo intellectual bullshit to make the MC look smart.

To an extent, yes. If I wasn't into riichi mahjong so much back in the day, I would never have even touched Akagi or the Saki series. Would I have thought of them differently if the subject matter were different too? Yes, but only by a bit. It's how shows utilize such subjects to appeal to the audience that's more important, and their usages totally contrast from each other (psychological beat-down vs. CGDCT SoL).

I never really thought about it this way, but this makes sense, I DO think I like series relating to hobbies or genres I enjoy more then others a lot of the time, though that said, there's always series that will suprise me or bring an interest in me that I didn't think about before, ehehe~!>;P>
Essentially, it's all about whether you're flexible with your interests or not, really. I only enjoyed a few genres (action, shounen, music, mystery, etc.) when I started watching anime, but eventually I developped into someone who could watch almost any genres to any genres nowadays, though that said there are things I won't watch/read based on their concepts, and/or tones, and/or themes and some genres I'm really peculiar about what I like in them (like fantasy, BL, or horror)..=v='3

To some degree yeah. Series dealing with history or say military/geo politics get a probably slight boost from me because they are topics I care about.

If we got an actual proper hockey anime I probably would be more willing to overlook it's flaws. As it is I am still going to give that CGDCT show a look despite the ratings being not that great.

ANY anime well done that is "Actionable" and deals with Paramilitary stuff, Defensive Combat Shooting / Guns, doing Gung Ho stuff... 9 times out of 10 I'm gonna' watch and love it. I grew up End of the Cold War Kid and in the 1980s when everything was insufferably macho and about doing shit with style and attitude. So Anime of this nature I tend to gravitate to. The one I most mesh/fuck with is Black Lagoon. It can extend to Sci-Fi Outer Space stuff too, and ANYTHING with Aerial Combat (Jet Fighters, Piston Driven/Propeller Fighters) is going to also call out to me, having grown up an Air Force Brat when aircraft of the world actually looked cool as well as were effective. But of course it all got started with 1989's RIDING BEAN and the following are going to be my Jam as well:

Gunsmith Cats, NOIR, Najica: Blitz Tactics, GOLGO 13, Dirty Pair, Jormungand, Wicked City, AREA 88, Girly Air Force, Starblazers / Space Battleship Yamato (both original and modern), Crusher Joe, Angel Cop, Space Adventure Cobra, etc.

It's a theme and/or style as well. As of late I am venturing out more into genres and styles I shied away from for 30 years. I also mesh with this because I worked for almost 15 years doing Pro Active Security Enforcement in rowdy and violent places and can relate to thee situations (usually) and violence on screen when ground based anyhow. *LOL*

Honestly? Yes. If an anime is centered around a topic or hobby i'm into, then it's easier for me to get into. I love games so any sort of game anime is perfect for me. I'm interested in books and reading and Miss Bernard Said was interesting for me for that reason, without the book talk it wouldn't have been as interesting (The story itself was meh)
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

I do watch quite a few anime adapted from or related to games. Beyblade, Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokémon, High Score Girl, and stuff like the FF VII movie, the Street Fighter II movie, and a few really bad anime based on Persona and Ace Attorney have all been thing I have watched or am slowly in the process of watching. I haven't watched anything related to my major with game development since that honestly sounds like it would be boring af to watch. I have watched a show I really enjoyed about drawing manga, and I do like to draw occasionally. And I guess if you really want to dig deep, I do like watching a lot of LGBT romance anime as I feel I can relate to the characters better since I am pansexual and trans compared to watching a heterosexual romance anime. Not really dunking on heterosexual romance anime I just feel I can understand the characters better in LGBT ones since there is an extra factor of relatabilitiy.
This post is brought to you by your local transfem gamer goblin. Will not tolerate bigotry and will fight against "anti-woke" sentiment to make the anime community a safer place.

This is a given for most people, any show (or topic in that show) that relates to them or a subject they are interested in will usually increase their enjoyment of said show. Fena Pirate Princess was a recent one for me, i've always loved pirate shit, since the days I played with pirate lego as a kid.

I love fishing so Diary of our Days at Breakwater and this seasons Slow Loop have been especially fun.

I'm sure I would have enjoyed them anyway, but watching Shirobako and New Game as an animator definitely brought it to a higher level for me. I burst out laughing the first time I saw characters working with NotAutodesk Saya.

Of course, if it does a poor job representing the interest then I'll hate it a lot more. Pride of Orange was already a totally worthless show, but the fact that it does a terrible job at portraying hockey put it on my permanent shit list.

Not really. Honestly I think I'd just get really bored watching a show focusing on any real life hobbies I currently have or have had in the past. I used to be big into drawing, but I couldn't see myself sitting through a whole series focused entirely on art, for example.

That's a dangerous double edged sword. Your love for the topic either elevates the show or puts it in your hate radar if/when it bungles the topic/hobby/etc you like.

there aren't any shows that deal with things I like with the level of maturity needed.
the hobby itself ends up as the dressing instead of the main dish.
bands/guitar
art/comics
toys/plamo
if you have seen any of these sort of things you know what I'm talking about.

I guess so. Sound! Euphonium is a show I love dearly partly because a lot of the conflicts and feelings in that show I directly experienced myself in high school. I was a band kid during my time in high school and played a bit in college so I can relate to it a lot.

I will say though, the show is gorgeous regardless. Worth the watch

Nope, not at all. I mean, if they might be related to anything in my real life that might be a good thing. But I don't care for that. And most of the anime I enjoyed and like doesn't even have anything related to job/studies/hobbies/interests.

- NOT your usual shounen anime
- Pure comedy? DEAD WRONG
- Treat Gintama as SoL/weekly sitcom especially earlier seasons
- Ep 1 & 2 are for manga readers
