When starting an anime with multiple adaptations, do you typically watch the original first or the newest one?

I myself tend to watch the original version before starting the new one. For example I watched Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 before Brotherhood. I personally find it much easier to go from old to new than from new to old.

Watched 2003 before Brotherhood.
Watched david Pro's JoJo before the 90s OVAs.
Watched 2011 HxH before 1990's.

Using MAL, I'll go through the series as it was released, focusing on the main series first, before giving spin-offs a chance, unless they happen to be the main story's chronological order.

It's like with the Monogatari series, if you go into that series late, back tracking it is a bitch, because the films Kizumonogatari 1-3, are part of Bakemonogatari.

I'm just glad I saw the movies first, before going through the rest of the series, because the Light Novels are like that.

Typically you go for the more well-received one first.

FMA 2003 is the only exception, because Brotherhood was made under the assumption you've already seen 2003 and so it fast-forwards through its first 13 episodes.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

Most recently I watched Hellsing ultimate instead of the old TV one, which I had already seen the first episode before, so I kinda had an idea that the new one is vastly better.

I'm no completionist, so I watch the best one, obviously.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

I always make sure to watch the original first. This is why I have FMAB On-Hold. I want to see how the first adaptation went so I can later compare it to the new one and see what was improved upon and such.

Original first, although not always?

Like Fruits Basket (2001) -> Fruits Basket (2019)
Neon Genesis Evangelion-> Rebuild movies
Cardcaptor Sakura-> Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card-hen (technically a sequel, not a remake?)

Then there are weird orders
Sailor Moon Crystal (dropped after 3 episodes) -> Sailor Moon (only the first season, I didn't bother watching the other seasons)

Re: Cutey Honey (dropped after 1 episode) -> Cutey Honey (1970s) -> Re: Cutey Honey (completed!). Also didn't bother watching other adaptations.

Devilman: Crybaby (never watched the other Devilman series)

It all depends lmaooooo??? I usually only watch shows with one adaptation.

It depends. I saw HxH 99' first and realized later that was a mistake because one of the most praised arcs, Chimera Ant: hadn't come out yet.
I saw Berserk 97' first and dodged a bullet because everyone absolutely despised the CGI reboots.

Currently watching the Monogatari series (currently at Owarimonogatari 2nd Season), I decided to watch it chronologically by release date. That way I could experience it like it was originally watched.

Watching the Monogatari series by release date means getting introduced to random characters out of nowhere (who's this Episode guy?), random plot points out of nowhere, and a lack of surprises. Gee... what happened to Araragi at the end of Koyomimonogatari? I already know because I watched Hanamonogatari before!

Truly, this frustration is probably the best advertising for the light novels!

It reminds me of this story on Tumblr. This engineer guy finds fiction formulaic and boring. So his solution is to read serial web novels in languages he does not speak. Here's the quote:
"apparently, the combined forces of 'trying to figure out WTF is going on via the power of Google Translate' + 'cultural differences in storytelling conventions' + 'the inherent randomness of where the hell amateur authors are gonna take their plots'—those all mashed up to make stories that were unpredictable enough to keep him guessing all the time"

Yeah this is the right way I think.
Cuz it is better to either watch the one that doesn't spoil the other one or just watch the better one altogether.
I do not recommend anyone watch hxh 99 before the 2011 one since the new one is insanely better and the old would spoil, while I also recommend people to watch 2003 before brotherhood since it doesn't spoil anything and its two different things.

I start with the original most of the time, unless it’s something like Fullmetal Alchemist which has one of the adaptations way higher than the other

Either between the highest rated or the original. I watched fruits basket 2019 and hxh 2011 first for example but I checked out chose to watch 1997 berserk as the first as well (not that it was bad or anything but just because it's the earliest)

It's kind of a random choice

Exactly.

That's why I made the comparison with Kizumonogatari and Bakemonogatari (Kizumonogatari is the later release of the origin between Araragi and Shinobue aka Kiss Shot Accel....)
Anyway, Kizu takes place before Bakemonogatari as far as story is concerned. but the Monogatari series is a saga anyway.

When it came to the Dragonball franchise, I watched that mixed though.
Here's an example:

DBZ (Android-End of series with movies/ovas and specials), DBS (Start to finish and movie), DBZ (Start to Android Saga), Dragonball, Dragonball GT, then DBZ (Start to finish) and finally I'm waiting for Dragonball Super Hero.
