Am I the only one who has a hard time getting attached to shounen characters?

First of all, I'm aware I'm not the only one, "am I the only one" is a figure of speech that I like to use to start a title. For some reason every time anyone puts "am I the only one" in the title, all the comments are focused on that phrase. I'm writing this because I know SOMEONE will type something along the lines of "Of cOuRsE you're not the only one there are 7 billion people on earth" With that out of the way.....

I often find myself having a hard time getting attached to anime characters especially the cast of shounens such as demon slayer, my hero academia or attack on titan. To be honest, I believe characters are the most important part of any media and if the characters are not likable in a show, it will probably never go in my favs. The only anime that I think has a perfect cast is Gintama, I think Gintama might have my favourite cast of characters in any media. The cast feels so charming, relatable and wholesome, it's insane how much I love them. Watching characters from other shows after Gintama just doesn't have the same effect for me and I'm often left underwhelmed.

As you already know (obviously), there are tons of different shows out there so there will always be a set of cast members that will suit everyone even if they're average. I can't really get attached to some shounen characters cause they're just not really for me/they don't resonate with me.

A cast that does resonante with me (not and anime or shonen), is from Omniscient Readers Viewpoint. Perfect character writing and I relate with some of the characters in different ways. Relating to characters for most people will mean they like them so you probably can relate with some/most of the Gintama cast in some way idk.

I can definitely see what you're saying. I think it depends on how much anime you've watched. An inexperienced watcher (like me) might love Gon, Eren, Deku, Tanjiro, etc., but to those who have more anime under their belt, those characters are really nothing special.

"Am I the only one who has a hard time getting attached to shounen characters?"

Shounen or battle shouen?
Because battle shounen protagonists are pretty hateable by default with very few exceptions like Mugiwara, Yorozuya and other similar crazy groups of people.

Hard to say as there are some shows of shounens action/sports where I like characters for ex. Bleach, JJk, Kuroko no basuke and Ace of Diamond and there are other titles where I am not attached to characters as for ex. Dragon Ball, Naruto, Soul Eater, Haikyuu etc.

First of all your standards are way too high.. don't expect average anime like mha to be as as good as GINTAMA!! you will never enjoy any show then.

and I think many people love shounen characters
for example, many people I know including me cried seeing the ending song of aot s4 p2

if we didn't love and were so connected to the shounen characters we wouldn't have cried watching it

liking a character has nothing to do with the genre and more to do about how good and immersive the story is

If you realize that people commonly respond that way, isn't it more logical to just change your wording than it is to include a paragraph explanation on why people should ignore your word choice?

"Am I the only one who has a hard time getting attached to shounen characters?" -> "Do you have a hard time getting attached to shounen characters?"

Literally the exact same question, without the "am I the only one", oh-woe-is-me bullshit.

It happens because Kimetsu no Yaiba and Shingeki no Kyojin don't have a single good character

It happens because you are comparing average shōnen like kny and mha to Gintama or yyh or op or death note or hxh

The later ones are s tier shonens bro
Btw , yeah gintama has the most solid cast of characters I have ever seen

Well i always have a hard time getting attached to all fictional characters lmao. Like if they die then they die, if theyre sad, theyre sad. I wont get emotional whenever anything happens to them until several rewatch of those scenes or digging deeper later after i finished the series

gintama doesnt only have the best cast in shounen but imo it is the best cast in all of anime (just my opinion),it also seems like u share the same opinion then i guess dont compare other battle shounen casts to it.There are battle shounens with really good casts like one piece, hxh, fmab etc which have likable and well written characters maybe not on the level of gintama but they are still really fun characters to watch,so check them out incase you havent yet.
edit:i just looked at your list and forgot to add that pls continue jojo, idk why i forgot to add this but jojo has one of the most entertaining and fun casts in a battle shounen.

Looking at MHA scores: S1 7.98, S2 8.19, S3 8.12, S4 7.93, S5 7.46

As much as I agree with you on MHA being average (even below according to my taste), the ratings are all pretty far above MAL average. The average MAL rating is 6.56 ...

Might I add hunterxhunter to that list..yeah
I just can't get attached to the characters,or rather, the shows Don't even try, they kinda assume you're already attached to them which is not the case, so every high the series should have just ends up pushing me away even more.
My guess is that if it's one of your first animes to watch, the carecters are gonna feel remarkable enough for you to get attached to them, also if you just get overly emersed in whatever you're watching I can see that too.

But Gintama is a shounen as well...

I digress. I personally disagree. I think there's plenty of shounen and even generic battle shounen anime with likeable casts. Take JJK & Demon Slayer for example, I think they both had very likeable characters.

I don't like those characters either, which is why I rarely watch those anime. I recommend SKET Dance; it has a crossover with Gintama. The Promised Neverland is my other favorite.

I don't get attached to shounen main characters idk why it's always the side characters mostly like i prefer sanji over luffy, aizen over ichigo, zenitsu and akaza over tanjiro, shikamaru and itachi over naruto and kamina over simon

One Piece and Gintama have the best cast of characters in a battle shonen series. I would definitely recommend trying it out. Granted, One Piece characters are not as realistic as Gintama's but as a group they work really well together.

Yeah that's exactly why. Too bad the title can't be changed. So does it matter anymore? No.

I'm inclined to agree.

Most shounen main characters act like a selfless nice guy with strong determination towards a noble or great goal. While this isn't a bad trait in itself, it doesn't really add much depth to them. And after a while it gets a bit repetitive (e.g. Tanjiro saying he will protect Nezuko at all costs, Deku saying he will become the greatest hero of all time, etc.). Their ambitions are typically too one-dimensional for my tastes.

It depends on the type of shounen. I never got the motivation to keep watching battle shounen like Naruto, Bleach, Hero Academia etc. and I barely got attached to any of these characters or the plot, but I got really attached to the characters of some my favorite shounen / favorite series. It doesn't matter if those are shounen or not.

I kinda felt the same way until I started reading Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, Detective Conan, and Yu☆Gi☆Oh!.

Then again, I admit that I don't read shounen very much because I get intimidated by the chapter/volume lengths of many popular series.

Or Witch Watch or Astra Lost in Space. Since they're all by the same writer, the main difference is the situations he puts the characters in.

Generally not, though as pretty much everything else in life, it's always a case-by-case scenario. Sometimes I will get attached to them, and other times I won't, for whatever factors.

Not really. Experience has in reality little (if nothing) to do; it's the personal preferences and sensibilities the ones playing the bigger role.

My case is opposite to u, I have not got attached to gintama cast yet. Maybe it may change if I continue it. Same apply for any character Tsugumi Ohba wrote or jojo characters or most aot characters
