From a scale from 1 to 5, how good are anime recommendations usually?

Honestly, most of the recommendations are surface level. They are usually some other popular anime that happens to have a kinda similar plot, but that's where it usually ends. The moods and characters can be completely different, yet it gets to the top of the page.
But to be frank, what do you expect? The highest recommendations are the ones with the most recommendations from the most people. Of course, the most popular anime get to the top. Also, the first recommendation is the only one immediately visible (This rule is sometimes broken for no reason.). So, the reasoning of the recommendation is won't always be the best since it's just the first guy who thought of the connection.
What do you guys think about this?

Most of the anime recommendations people have given me are really good. I don't see a problem with them

OP is talking about the recommendation section here on MAL, the ''if you like blank you should watch blank''. Otherwise, I too have a positive experience with recommendations given to me

Those recommendations are a good way for me to discover anime I wouldn't otherwise hear about. I've learned to watch them without expectations, however, as they are never met.

I fucking hate when they say stuff like the protagonists both have black hair. Like that matters. I agree with OP it's often just surface similarities and genre with no interest in what concepts either show is interested in.

I read a lot of recommendations as they are posted, and a lot of them don't follow the guidelines or are really simple, like the one OP posted. I think they are really helpful for finding new anime, and I go to the recommendations section of anime that I like a lot, but it's a shame that they only rarely say something meaningful, and the number of recommendations ends up being way more relevant.

There are a lot of exceptions, though

there is some popularity bias but thats kindof expected
otherwise i like the system very much
you can filter what you feel is the most important similarities between the 2 series by actually reading what the recs say

in particular for the op, i remember azudaioh and lucky star were always the most memed, and often mentioned together as the 2 most influential moe series of the 00s, it's a perfectly reasonable rec

Mirai Nikki and Eden of the East are my goto examples for this dumb shit, but I've seen dumber examples that I don't commit to memory.

Yes, there's a lot of shallow recommendations here. A few weeks ago I noticed a guy recommending every ufotable anime to each other just because they are from the same studio

individual recommendations can be ass, but one thing i do take note of is when a bunch of people recommend something. i started watching re:zero because it had a lot of people recommending it for fans of higurashi and madoka magica, my top 2 and 3 anime. so far, i'm really enjoying re:zero, and i might not have watched it if it wasn't for the recommendations, so i'd say recommendations are helpful for me

that said, when i write recommendations, i try my best to avoid phrasing it like "both shows are..." - i try to be a little bit more descriptive about why i think one thing might be enjoyed by fans of the other

It's helped me at times and the simple connections don't bug me much because ultimately, they are still connections

You pretty much summed up all the issues I have with most anime recs on this site.

I have never used the recommendations. I feel I can figure out what to watch all by myself.

The problem with comparing Anime A to Anime B is even if they are about the same thing they won't be the same quality, VAs....etc there are too many intangibles to be comparing one show to another regardless. Even shows like Love Live Idol Project and Love Live Sunshine are quite different even though they are about the same shit.

Using recommendations is setting yourself up for disappointment.

Like everything in life, using the lazy method will give you lazy results. Put in some effort and you will generally be rewarded.

Side note I have seen them as I scroll to up coming anime announcements etc and have seen some truly messed up comparisons that make no sense how people are connecting two anime together. People need to do less drugs cause that's the only way I can imagine them connecting some shows. Pretty colors.

you might think that but if you read the recommendations section on the forums people literally ask for recommendations just based on only specific traits the MC has, or how the characters look, and shit like that. peoples' interest in what they watch is exactly this superficial

I've found them extremely useful sometimes:

Yes I made that one up, in case it's not obvious.

A lot of them for sure don't look like much thought was put into them.

Something like: If you liked Kill la Kill then you might like Akame ga Kill because both have "kill" in the title

After that happen I just removed it from home page.

The issue is that nobody on this site can read the guidelines, and instead decide to play spot-the-similarity between two utterly random shows.

Nobody needs to know that "the main character of both shows has blue hair" or "the main character of both shows is very strong" (both genuine recommendations found at the time of this post, paraphrased). Would it kill someone to try and consider how a pair of shows portray the same theme from different perspectives, such that watching one enhances the other? Or discuss how two shows draw inspiration from the same source, making the comparison of the two fruitful to understanding the origins of both? But barely anyone here gives that much effort, so such things are few and far between.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

They are usually pretty spot-on for me, the only problem is that I've already seen most of the recommended shows already.
I wish there were more obscure anime mentioned in recommended, not only the obvious ones I could think of myself.

Never used them to find a new anime, always look at them to have a laugh. Some of them should not even be allowed to be posted like "Its the 2nd season of this show". Maybe MAL should make a rule that you can't recommend sequels/ other seasons of the same show.

Woah, another self-aware self-promo thread. Might as well advertise my whole profile. Though I will admit, I wasn't the best in the past.

They are usually good for the most part for someone like me who will take any title without caring about the information. Though, good recs come with good pleasures too, I just don't remember much and usually ask people directly for stuff.

But how can one be the same person to make this thread as well as this:
