What’s your thoughts on this sub or dub argument. Honestly I don’t understand it at all. I don’t mind being asked if I prefer sub or dub either for anime in general or for certain ones like Black Clover and Code Geass. But this argument is pointless like does it really matter what language you watch the show in? It doesn’t. How does someone having different language preferences affect you? It doesn’t. What truly matters is that you’re enjoying the show not only in the language you watch it in but in general.

Trash, buns, cheeks, excrement. It is an argument that should have died a long ass time ago. Since no one on either side of that debate want to listen to each other.

I don’t really care but Sub is honestly 1000% better than dub, there’s no way around it, you can learn japanese from watching sub, you can’t say the same about dubs, not to mention how cringe dubs sound.

I don’t go around attacking dub watchers though, it’s their preference not mine

Finally a sub watcher who acts like a decent human being. I prefer most anime subbed, but I don’t go around shitting on dub watchers and posts on social media that are dubbed. I wish everyone was like this and just respected each other’s preferences.

when i watch dubs, i watch them in english, so i will be making my opinion based on the english dubs of the series i bring up.

i usually watch my anime in subtitles, since it's most likely the freshest and uncensored way to watch an anime, and i also just like hearing the emotion in the seiyuu's voices rather than the english VA's, but there's a large number of dubs that i think are great! i think that a great example is Soul Eater's dub, it's great in both the sub and the dub, so i like watching it in both, depending on my mood. one thing i've never understood about this argument is the hatred the opposing sides have for each other, it's a preference that the other person has, and you can't change it, although a lot of people act like they can.

Do whatever you like as long as you're having fun.
That's the answer I give whenever I see people arguing over erasmian vs modern pronunciation, a very similar situation to the dub vs sub debate.

They also act like someone having a diff preference has a negative impact on their lives which couldn’t be further from the truth. My fav dub is cowboy bebop. Other solid ones are fmab, naruto, death note, dragon ball, samurai champloo, seven deadly sins, the promised neverland, and code geass.

Yea. I used to watch demon slayer dubbed but I wasn’t really feeling it so I switched to sub and I liked it better. But don’t watch for ex Naruto subbed bc others do or people shit on you for watching it dubbed just do you.

I'm in the minority who 100% prefers dubs and will always watch them over subs if given the chance

Not gonna argue with others who prefer sub though, since I can understand why someone would prefer to watch a series as close to how it was originally broadcast as possible. I don't know why it was ever even an argument, yet alone how it's managed to persist for so long

Unless one is fluent in Japanese and can watch all anime raw, there is really no definitive answer as to whether watching sub or dub is better, since both subs and dubs have their own individual merits and weaknesses, no matter what people on either side of the debate want you to think

I don't know how old you are, OP, but the argument stems from the 1990s and the days of VHS, when dubbed anime cost -- adjusted for inflation -- ~$43 for a tape with 2-4 episodes, and subbed anime cost ~$52 per 2-4/ep tape. (Despite higher production costs, dub tapes were cheaper because they were more popular and sold more units, while the sub versions were a more "niche market" item.) People pretty much had to pick one or the other, debates raged on which was the "right" choice, and it wasn't easy to directly compare them unless you bought both. There were more prominent "edited/censored for TV" dub versions back then as well, which added more fuel to the flames.

The debate should've been largely ended by the introduction of DVDs, which essentially gave consumers "two language tracks for the price of one" and allowed for easy switching and comparison. But despite the technology shift, and dubs becoming much more faithful than in the past, the culture war still rages on today. And it's stoked primarily by sub purists who're all too willing to exaggerate a half-dozen controversial scripting choices over a decade into "This company BUTCHERS EVERYTHING" lies.

If there is a dub, i'll watch the dub

if there is no dub, I'll watch the sub.

I don't care if i'm watching sub or dub, both ways I get to enjoy the media in a way I enjoy. Normally I finish shows quicker with dub so that's why i watch it.

I don't care if someone else watches it, I get why people watch sub or dub or raw. There is no need to fight over something so trivial.

I personally don't care. For a lot of people who like sub, it's a preference in voice actors. They think Japanese voices sound better than dub voices. But I don't think that's always true. There are some cases where I feel dub voices sound better than sub voices. And if you watch dub for a long period of time, you may not even think about how the voice actors sound.

Honestly, it's a title-by-title basis for me. Jujutsu Kaisen is an anime that is far better as a sub while High School DxD is far better dubbed.

Not all subs are better than dubs.

I've seen many sub vs dub threads on here. But I've never seen a toxic dub watcher. They've usually been pretty chill from my experience. It's usually the people who prefer sub or watching anime raw that are the most toxic often times.

What arguments are you talking about?

Every time there's a thread about dub, people will just give their preferences and their reasons to believe why one is better than the other. No one is trying to purge dubs watchers or subs watchers.

For me sub is normally the best thing I still think that Funimation voice actors dosen't put any spirit into the characters they vocing. It's like they are dead inside after been force to work 24/7 for the last 100 years as Funimation thinks quantity over quality is the best way to work.

But then again myself enjoy a few dub, Golden Boi etc is 10/10 with dub and like 4/10 sub.

Nodame s1 is 10/10 dub thanks to how insanely good one of the voice actors is and just 7/10 sub.

A few shows out there is way better dub and ofc I enjoy Naruto both as sub and dub.

Enjoy what you want, but I'm rather sure most people if they learned to watch sub they would start giving a few shows a higher score. As voice acting to increase the quality of the show.

OP is right to an extent. Everyone should be able to enjoy an anime no matter sub or dub. However, when there's a discussion about a show and one person watched dubbed while the other subbed, the discussion's not really valid.

I've had such a different experience watching dubbed shows compared to subbed ones. I go back to some of the animes that I used to watch dubbed and there's just not enough emotion backed behind the voice acting when compared to subbed. It honestly affects the show so much.

I pretty much refuse to watch dubs. The acting is almost always terrible. Ghibli dubs are one of the few bright spots and that is because they have often used Hollywood actors in their main character roles and even supporting cast. I mean Howl's Moving Castle as an example is Christian Bale and Billy Crystal among others that did great jobs.

I also don't need subtitles for a lot of anime so that helps but I disliked dubs even when I needed the subs to understand most shows.

The biggest thing for me is that Japanese VAs are better by a massive margin at conveying emotion and I find they are much better just all around.

I mostly watch dubs and I know for a fact that subs are better for 99 percent of the anime. There are good dubs too like Samurai Champloo, Code Geass and Death Note. Now to the question, I think people should watch what they want. Some of them might have trouble enjoying the fights while reading the subs like me and others who are able can watch sub.

Apart from DBZ there's no dub I can stand. Really don't know how ppl prefer dub but yeah, their choice. I'm the kind of person who chooses anime bc of their VAs (not always, but it's like my final element to choose between 2 shows I really wanna watch). Also the emotions the Japanese VAs puts into their work are something else. I can't imagine crying hearing a dubbed scene no matter how sad it is.

I don't really have a preference. Unless the quality is abysmal, I'll watch pretty much anything, depending on my mood. If I'm in the mood to hear English, I'll go dub. If I'm in the mood to hear some Japanese, I'll go sub and on rare occasions I watch anime raw, barely understanding the Japanese and giving myself a headache in the process. The sub vs dub argument has been going on for decades now, and it will never end. It's all just preference. Remember, there is no right answer.

I don’t really care what someone else chooses to watch/prefers but I just can’t understand how can anyone praise a foreign dub.

It’s a fact that sub is better. It’s meant to be enjoyed & experienced in its original Japanese dub & the seiyuus are on another level. When someone says otherwise, I just don’t understand but you do you.

I mostly don't care but I hate how often this subject comes up.

I prefer subs and it's not such a big deal for me to read along as I've done that since being a Godzilla/Kaiju fan. But I don't hate all dubs. It depends what it is honestly. I really don't think I could watch Pokémon, Digimon or Bakugan in anything other than dub because I'm so used to it, plus their not so badly done, especially with most of the characters names being English (changed to English at least).

I just don't like the awkward stumbling over the Japanese names, it just happens too much that it sticks out. And also some English VA work can be totally flat & emotionless. Like even though I can't understand the Japanese language, I can totally understand their emotions and feelings.

It matters if dub presents a heavily altered version of the anime, like it used to do in US. People, who watched stuff like Sailor Moon, Digimon Adventure etc. with that dub, basically watched an entirely different anime not only with changed names, but with completely changed dialogues, soundtracks and sometimes even entire stories. And it's bizarre to think that I have absolutely nothing in common with those people, despite supposedly watching the same thing, because the originals were changed beyond recognition and our perception would differ too much to even discuss our impressions properly.

The argument is pointless. When I first started watching anime I tried out both dub and sub and I liked dub a lot better cuz I felt it was weird to read subtitles for tv show. Then I watched aot in sub cuz there was no other option on Netflix and I got used to reading subtitles. Now I prefer sub for everything (the only anime I have watched dubbed are naruto and death note).

I don't really think the language preference is the problem. Like, at all.

Some dubs are just so inferior and or altered that you might as well be watching a different show. Emotional, dramatic, or intense scenes can be much less impactful with worse voice acting. Sometimes the tone is ruined. It's not super common, but it does happen, especially with older anime. Usually you can never go wrong with sub. You just can't say the same for dubs. And no, I'm not a sub purist.

As someone who has been almost exclusively watching dubs, I've been trying to get myself more accustomed to subs. I think in a lot of cases, the sub version of an anime feels more authentic, and there aren't as many sub shows as dub shows that stand out as being silly or just plain bad; that's why people like it.

Despite that, I think I've gotten pretty lucky with the dubs I've watched. Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Black Lagoon are some standouts. I think it's really all about what you experience and which show it happens to be.
