So, one of my friends told me her story: " While I was trying to socialise with a patient at work (who is a kid into anime appareantly) I mentioned that I too watch anime. Later he started talk about all these shows he's watching. But later I felt uncomfortable saying "I watch anime" when I only watched 3 series so far and currently watching just 1 show. "

This made me wonder how many anime is enough anime to say that "I watch anime." Just wondering your opinion on my friend's situation.

There is no arbitary number that seperates noobs from experienced watchers and I can't come up with any good answer.
"Enough anime so you can hold a converation" maybe?
Nah it's "More anime than Theo1899 times two", that sounds more reasonable.

hmm never really thought about this but yeah this is a good question, I guess once you watch multiple shows from different genres that’s enough? I’m not really sure though

If you're into anime, then you're into anime. No use gatekeeping about how many someone has seen. Only elitists think that way. Every anime fan has to start somewhere.
Don't let others ruin things for you. Even if a toxic fan pisses in your cereal, you could just get another bowl of cereal.

I'd say "I started to watch anime recently" maybe. Then the other person knows that you haven't seen a lot of anime yet.

"Enough anime so you can hold a converation" makes sense tbh, in this case I could suggest the top 10 most popular animes to create the ultimate normie? LOL

Actually this is big brain, even knowing genres would help a newcomer. Are there any specific genres you have in your mind?

There isn't really anything wrong with that. Most people start out watching the popular things even though they try hard to avoid the "normie" label.

I used to feel the same way about books and Star Trek, but it really depends on who you're talking to and the kind of conversation they're willing to have.

Most people aren't going to throw a fit if you haven't seen their favourite show.

I guess the best genres to start off with are Action, Adventure, Slice of Life, Comedy, Romance, Shounen, Seinen (these two are technically demographics but a lot of the time they are also loosely used to describe a certain type of anime), Drama, Magic, Mecha, Sci-Fi, School

the thing about anime is shows tend to have multiple different genres all at once like for example a show could be a Drama/Comedy/Romance

If you are currently watching anime, then that’s enough to say that you watch anime. Numerically, a single anime would suffice, as long as you’re active as an anime watcher... is what I would say.

I agree with you. Maybe they are trying to set a goal to feel better about their interest (or knowledge) as a starter, just a guess though.

The amount of anime you need to watch before you can safely proclaim "I watch anime" is the amount you need to watch before you feel comfortable enough to share that you watch anime.

I agree with this, although this might be unapplicable if we're referring to those overconfident normies who watch a few and talk as if they know everything

yea im supposing so, but at the end of the day it's your own prerogative whether or not to make a fool of yourself lol.

Personally when I was still a "noob" I wasn't too open about having watched a couple anime, and in the moments that I did share, I think I was pretty reserved about it; I probably said something like "i've watched several / a few"

I mean, there isn't really a standard for however many anime you need watch to say that you like it. It's all based on your desire to seek new shows to watch. If watching anime feels like a chore to someone and they get zero enjoyment out of the few that they watch, then they're obviously someone who doesn't like anime. By the fact that your friend has seen a few anime already and is continuing to to watch more, it goes to show that they're someone who has an interest in it. So they shouldn't feel discouraged.

The big 6 are:

Battle Shounen
Isekai
Harem style romantic comedies
CGDCT (Cute Girls Doing Cute Things)
Sausage Fest
Tear Jerkers

Since the Emo Era ended these 6 genres cover 95% off all anime made.

I think 100 mark is enough to say I have watched anime but It took me around 200 anime to perfectly develop my taste.

Watching different genres will expand your knowledge 'bout anime. Some main genre are-

- Shounen
- Seinen
- Shoujo
- Josei
- CGDCT
- Harem/Ecchi
- Isekai
- SOL
- Drama
- RomCom

Yeah, that's about it.

To hold a conversation? It depends on the animes that she gets to watch. Going into the most popular ones should be a safe choice in that way (Basically Shounen), but then you are watching pure crap. So the alternative is going into obscure or elitist ones and whenever you talk about anime say that popular shit is boring and out of your intellectual level so they cant talk to you and they wont get that you are a newbie to anime

I strongly second this. The elitists pricks will try to "overwhelm" you with their anime knowledge; the cool kids will feed you eagerly with more shows matching your tastes and different genres you might be into.

Maybe in the context of your friend, watch the show that the patient enjoys so she can hold a conversation with the patient is enough for her?

But ultimately, how much anime is enough anime depends entirely on the person; Do they have a lot of free time?, How much of those time are they willing to spend watching anime?, What are they watching anime for?

something like that I guess.

There isn't a number on that stuff, you might know when you've watched enough anime but it's very subjective and anime has different lengths.

Has a 8.60 mean score

There isn't some barrier you watch anime you watch anime. Honestly as long as you have a continued interest in it rather than it just being a one off you are an anime fan. Honestly if you are having trouble holding a conversation maybe just vow to pick up a show together that both interests you.

Whenever there's a frequency to it say; she watches one episode of a particular anime 25 years ago. Today she's watching another one. 25 years later she'll watch the third ep. That's more than enough to say "i watch anime" if you get what i mean.
