Total income was 668,000 yen (US$6,000), or a monthly average of 74,000 yen (US$670)

They remark that their income might actually be on the higher end as far as first-year animators go. She has often heard that 50,000 yen (US$450) per month is a typical figure. On the low end, some might make around 30,000 yen (US$270) per month.

There is a video on YouTube that shows the same thing.

It's f*cked up. You're basically earning the same amount of money as a part-timer. Not to mention long work hours...

Nothing wrong with being an animator, just be an animator that has pride and make sure you earn a living not a slave wage.

An important point to consider with this is also the cost of life in Japan. It's crazy expansive and should be a lot harder with such a salary. It's not a 3rd world country were you can easily get by on such a salary.

Pretty sure these animation studios are not in some rural village but in the bigger cities so I doubt that these salaries (especially the lower ones) even cover the rent for some miserable room.

That does not seem right. 7/11 part-timers make around a million yen each year. How many hours per month was this person working?

Yeah, I do not want to bother watching a dozen 10-minute long videos either. From what I saw, they are a freelancer, so the payment is usually delayed and the amount of money they receive each month is not fixed. There are no bonuses either (in Japan, annual bonuses can reach around six months worth of salary). They also mention taking long breaks.

Nevertheless, that still feels way lower than it should be.

Damn 470$ a month in Japan, that must be rough. I don't see why even bother paying them, just make it legal for studios to own slaves

no, but this just goes to show we can expect more shows like Ex arm in the future.

It's fascinating to me tbh
How can this be happening in a country that was on a verge of becoming superpower in 90s? Not to mention that it's infamous for expensive prices

if you work your population to death you'll have no one left to buy your stuff.

So sad... Where do most of the revenue go to then? No way the higher of the hierarchy is taking almost all of it.

Meanwhile in America, the average cost to produce a single cartoon episode is around a million bucks. :/

And animation is a work that you need to have a very especific skill to do, it isn't like those people are just random teens wanting some extra bucks.
heh.

Animators in Japan making next to nothing has been going on for a long time. Its kind of hard to imagine that the people that worked on some of the most famous anime only got paid peanuts to do it.

I don't have deep knowledge of the economy in Japan but that just looks dirt cheap. Their monthly pay is almost three times lower than the minimal wage of where I live. It's just disappointing coming from a developped country.
Also, I feel like most companies take advantage of animators. Oh, it's your passion ? Then I guess, you don't care much about the money, uh ? And if you don't like the pay, there will always be someone more naive to replace you.

This is nothing new unfortunately.

The question is why has this issue not been addressed.

Being a decent Animator requires skills. You would think the Animators would have the leverage.

Since no one in the thread has mentioned it, there are two links to a fundraiser in the OP.

For record, here's a breakdown of wages by position

https://kotaku.com/average-anime-industry-salaries-get-depressing-1774852881

The lowest here are in-betweeners, they get $200 a week / $10K a year.

The girl in the OP's main problem was not getting enough work, see the article and how 1/3rd of her entire income came in October. So she's got sporadic work. If you see stories about new devs in the game industry internationally it's often the same story.
