What are some anime that you finished and just sat there thinking about it for a while

Like Ghost in the Shell franchise which questions what it means to be human

Psycho-Pass which delves into what free will really is and if arresting criminals before they commit a crime makes sense

Death Parade - who goes to heaven or hell

Death Note - who gets to judge criminals and execute them for their deeds

What are some anime that really left you thinking?

Mushishi episode 22 - the concept of death, rebirth, and the value of a person's consciousness.

Sukasuka - What it means to be a hero, the pursuit of happiness and how to do it.

Haibane Renmei - Fear of the Unknown, Despair and Redemption, basically a reverse memento mori.

FranXX - Huxleyan dystopia.

Shinsekai Yori - Hegelian Master and Slave dialectic.

Utena - A lot of themes. But what stood out for me is the clash between altruism and heroism, and whether there are people who's actually self-conscious of their past wrongdoings are "worth saving" or not.

Code Geass - Reform and Revolution, and its take on how to achieve society's progress.

Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome - Carpe Diem, Tempus Fugit the anime.

Kill la Kill - Not losing your way (duh), and not to think too much about what others think of you. Haters gonna hate.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

I'm not kidding; it taught me that you are your ancestors' legacy and that you can't escape from the effects of decisions that they made.

Dororo - is the sacrifice of one person for the good of the many really worth it? basically the ancient old philosophical saying "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" made into an anime.

Vinland Saga - the meaning of revenge.

If I should name the most important ones for me then Mushishi and Haibane Renmei. These two and SOL in general have made me dvelve deep into the hole of mono no aware and then the buddhist philosophy and worldview behind it, and in the process of trying to get to the roots of it eventually I have read through a few books like Murasaki Shikubu's Genji Monogatari, The World of the Shining Prince, The Cambride History of the Heian period and art, Andrew Juniper' Wabi sabi and now I am readiing the two volumens of Zen buddhism: A history by Heinrich Dumoulin. There is still a long way to go but it is interesting how having read through these makes you appriciate things in anime you haven't even noticed before or didn't thought much of it. I have been rewatching Mushishi for a few months now (one or two episodes a week) and it feels in a way a completly different experience.

"The only person that can save you is yourself!", Monogatari franchise

“Now I have neither happiness nor unhappiness.

Everything passes.

That is the one and only thing that I have thought resembled a truth in the society of human beings where I have dwelled up to now as in a burning hell.

Everything passes.”

Penguindrum. I didn't really find it that enjoyable to watch, but it certainly had some things to say about fate, which were interesting I guess.
SEL for obvious reasons.

Recently, I've been thinking a lot about Toshokan Sensou, especially after reading the novels but also in the anime too regarding the values of censorship in media.

Wandering Witch is supposedly not as philosophical as its spiritual predecessor in Kino’s Journey, but it made me really think of and realize the genuine inconsistency and unpredictability of life itself, and how it feels like an adventure (for better or worse) due to such characterizations, depending on how one lives. It also made me contemplate on how we as humans are not exactly consistent with our own mindsets, ideals, and thought processes, either. Sometimes we make the bold “heroic” choices, other times we choose very ill-advised ones, majority of times we’d usually default with not trying to get involved; even then, it depends on our emotions, as we make 90% of our decisions in life based on personal feelings.

So far only Legend of Galactic Heroes made me do that, it made me think that even dictatorship will be good in good hands but it also made me think what would happen to that empire under that good dictatorship when the leader is incapable to lead anymore.

Fate/Zero definitely made me think about what it means to be a leader/king and even outside of that, each ideology for each character have stuck with me for a very long time.

Girls Last Tour. This gets into the value and meaning of life, the moment, facing uncertainty, human nature, and more. It gets you thinking all over the place, but through a lens of existentialism grounded in a sedate mix of hope, resignation, and gratitude.

AoT actually makes me think of wars tbh.. especially in a situation where it's already became a cycle of hatred..

And Mononoke Hime too. We are obviously the ones destroying nature.. but at the same time, sometimes we did it to keep ourselves alive.. But then if mother nature fights back, who are to blame?
