Yeah that was as cop out of an ending as I've ever seen. Bravery just wins?

When Maka was turning into a weapon I went, OH SHIT what is Maka, and then we get that...ugh. Same with Kid! Why did his super weapon crack his dad's mask?

So many unanswered questions and a rushed ending...you had 51 episodes and you ended it with this rush job? Inexcusable to me.

Still gets a 7/10.

Personally, as an anime only watcher, I did not enjoy the ending too much. The courage bit was IMO a wasted opportunity, worse even than how bleach ended it's final fight. I had so many questions regarding death city, death and kid themselves, black stars future, maka's random new ability, the villains, and so much more. The main thing I wanted to know was left out too, I noticed during the ending credits it showed Mifune and Angela finally walking up the stairs of the DWMA, personally I think an entire arc about that would be more interesting than most of the show lol. I would be curious how DWMA would act on witches after that, if it would decrease the amount of villainous witches and thus the need to exterminate then discriminately, resulting in far slower production of death scythes, or what.

It's funny how much annoyed and unsatisfied I was on the second half of the episode, but I still like it in some weird way.

First half of the episode was awesome, I liked how Maka became weapon because of her father's weapon blood.

The second half was just....
lame and corny. It would be okay if she had one sentence about courage and then pull out unbelievable move or trick or something and one punch in the face is NOT what I mean.

And yeah, Soul Eater can officially be renamed Maka's Show...

The ending was alright. Nothing great, but I've seen worse.
It's pretty obvious that it was rushed AF after it deviated from manga, and the whole thing became pretty generic and mediocre, while the manga part was top notch quality.
I still liked the design and animation none the less. they did a pretty job in that respect. I especially loved how they animated Maka fighting style. Someone fighting with a scythe is pretty unusual and the way they did it is pretty amazing and cinematic, something you can't see in the static images of the manga. Kudos for that.
Loved the mini epilogues during the ending credits, they were really really good. Didn't anyone notice how Medusa is clearly shown being alive? That's cool, props for it. Also loved BJ finally getting to dance due to the coffe shop reopened and Marie punching Azusa.
Overall, the series gets a 7/10 for me, with the first part until manga departure being a 9.5 and the last part being a 6, because of too many asspulls and deus ex machinas, rushed stuff and main characters either being abruptly eliminated or put aside for good.

P.S. Everyone seems angry at the "punch" thing, yet only a couple of the comments here got it right. Don't you get how the kishin was beaten? Really? It wasn't by pure strenght of a fist. Asura's power depended on his willpower. He was afraid of everything, and he became unbeatable by wiping off all of his fears going insane. When Maka didn't buy it and refused to give up to madness and fear, he was shaken in his convinctions, something not even shinigami-sama, who tried to beat him with brute force, could do, and gave up to fear once again. He basically pissed his pants, and that made him lose control of all the souls he absorbed.
She literally talked him into being beaten. The punch was effective because he believed it would.

The moment they started implying Maka had something other than the Genie Hunter ... and they started to point to her chest ... yeah no :/
Kind of felt silly seeing "bravery" win but then again, Asura explained literally everything with his definition of madness so I guess he got what he deserved.

I liked the world setting though, they explained a lot throughout the show (maybe not as much at the start)

It definitely wasn't a bad show, actually really enjoyable.

8/10, would have been a 9/10 if it actually didn't feel like a rush to finish the final 10ish episodes.

I liked it. It was epic and all but it felt incomplete. They should have continued on what happened after in the mangas. I wanted a lot more from death the kid! But at least it was epic, so its an okay episode.

The manga was still ongoing in 2009, so they had to deviate from the manga storyline.

It was really enjoyable and entertaining until the Kishin's revival, but then got worse in the Arachnophobia arc. The ending was rushed and convenient... Shinigami didn't defeat the Kishin and Maka did it with only a punch (what about Soul Eater?).
Well, overall, it was a good anime. 7/10.

Ok I know this is Shounen but what was that end? That wasn't even the power of believing or anything the usual Shounen goes with. That was just the enemy losing his mind because Maka said something he couldn't comprehend... Then Maka punched him once and suddenly he dies.

I never thought I'd say this but Kid aside Excalibur was actually the best thing of the final two episodes. It was just way too random. I could have even lived with Maka's weapon form defeating him but this just feels like an ass pull.

Well. All in all I really liked it. The first half was awesome and while the second wasn't quite as good it was still enjoyable. Especially Kid, Liz and Patty. Best trio!

at first i liked the beginning of this episode especially when maka got to use kishin hunter. but then everything just got stupid is like everybody was talking about maka only. and there were others like black star and death the kid who were in that bubble. and they started talking about courage and how maka has it but i for one know that black star and death the kid and death himself have more courage than her.

This anime is one I really liked, but the last episode kinda messed up. Some of the problems I found with the ending are:

1. The blow from Asura to Death could easily have been avoided by a man of his calibre. No matter how much you tell me it was a last resort and he didn't have time, come one we're talking about Death here. He could easily have put up at least a weak barrier. The scene was made to move the story on to its final script but this was the first undoing.
2. Asura initially seems like an exceptional character, filled with madness. However, once he enters his barrier and starts fighting, his character changes.
3. The words "I'm relieved" that Maka utters. Yes, it succeeds in scaring the crap out of Asura, agreed. But it makes absolutely no sense why she would say that at that point of time. If it was a resort aimed at invoking fear, it could only have been seen as such. It wouldn't have succeeded in scaring him. Or, if it was actually her relief, it couldn't have been because literally nothing happens before that for her to be relieved. This was another annoying block in the gears of this anime. They just wanted to defeat Asura using Maka's bravery but they failed in finding a proper script for that.
4. The final punch that defeats Asura. I get that he was frightened and shaken by the bravery, but what actually deals the finishing blow and breaks his mask and face, is the punch. There even was no bravery involved. This was in my opinion the writers relying too much on the bravery concept. They could at least have made Asura's defeat a bit believable. The way they did this was even worse than the cliche "I need to protect my friends"-shounen-powerup style. Way worse. This just made me scoff at Maka.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this..

This show really started good with it's unique art style.
I think it goes downhill after Kishin and Arachnophobia
Medusa is a better villain IMO.

Bad cliche ending, so many wasted characters. The anime still is good, but they should do a remake someday, more faithful to the manga, like FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

It's extremely rare of me to hate an ending, but this is one of them. This ending to put it simply is... ABSOLUTELY BULLSHIT!!! I mean, Evans' new Kishin-hunter hunter form suddenly appearing does make sense, and I can tolerate the revelation that Maka is actually a demon weapon that is also a meister and that her being unconscious somehow awakens her weapon form. But I can't absolutely comprehend how stupid it all wraps up!

How Maka's bravery completely obliterates Ashura along with all his madness. I get how as madness is something that everyone has, so is bravery, making both a powerful weapon in some way, but the way it's applied in this episode for Maka with her power of bravery on her heart to defeat Ashura, it is just trash! The legendary Ashura that may be the most powerful entity in this world besides Death himself instantly being portrayed as this coward filled with fear upon seeing Maka's bravery and not being able to understand it, is truly a sin for the people who turned Ashura this way. No matter how many times it's explained that Ashura holds fear and is ultimately a coward, the audience expects Ashura, a powerful kishin to fight as he is portrayed to be, powerful as the legend said. But instead, he is cocky at first which is alright then, as what happened in the episode, he simply became a pussy without much more fight than was expected...

This is the absolute purest and most cliche shonen thing ever! But even other shonen shows that I've watched has never shown an ending such as this! Even ones that are close to doing so did it in a possible kind of way, and not this ass-pull garbage kind of ending! I am aware that at some point, the anime of Soul Eater has strayed from the Manga. But this does not excuse the show itself to have a horrible ending. For example, take... FMA (The old one) for example, although it did stray from the manga's story, the original story it has created is actually brilliant! The ending itself is actually just damn mind-blowingly fantastic, not as good as FMAB's but nice nevertheless, with the original story itself being, I dare say, better than FMAB! (the one which followed the original story from the manga)

Soul Eater was really a great show to watch, 2 epic and catchy openings with quirky and interesting characters, along with a brilliant concept of the whole subect on souls which holds much potential for story. The show constantly has cool OST, along with smooth and fast paced, well animated fight scenes that from times to times, made me shiver in excitement! However, it's truly a shame that the show's original ending that didn't follow the manga's story is total bull crap and a complete DISGRACE TO SOUL EATER as a series...

Be aware that this is my opinon though... It's up to (you, who's reading this) to agree or disagree with my long-ass comment

Pure shit, overall the series is so goddamn overrated. Cliché Ending, Too much 'power of friendship' and 'not skill but courage' BS.
Might have enjoyed 5-10 episode, i.e only 10% of the anime and the rest was crap, and when I thought it couldn't go much lower, they surprised me with this last episode. The God of Death couldn't take the hit head on and almost died, but here's Maka, an ordinary human, taking it and not even a goddamn scratch. The final punch courage punch was so awful, I puked.

So many sudden powerup on this last episode, if they gonna pull out something like this such as Maka becoming a hybrid, they should have introduce it before this final battle.

Lol Kishin at the end suddenly just become like Light at the end of Death Note.

Bravery defeats Fear, I guess I can accept that. But with just only a punch? I was hoping she used Soul and together defeating Kishin.

Bone left some loose ends before ending the series.

WTF Bones just keeping Medusa alive, I'm so tired of seeing her face.

Well gotta see the real ending from the Manga.

Took me a long time to get to this, and I have to admit I really liked it in the first half, but once Arachne showed up it felt like all focus was lost and we were just getting random stuff thrown out everywhere which culminated into a mess of a finale.

First half felt like this would've been an 8/10 series. Second half killed that down to 5/10 for me.

It took me three times to get into this show...and when I finally got into this enough to watch the whole thing it had to end like this. I guess I started to dislike this though when Medusa was killed off without seeing her really make use of Stein...but man..Top 5 worst endings for sure.

The way the show handled its final fight ended up making it barely a fight at all... I was already being lenient towards everything that was happening being very convenient like their near-death power-ups since they were very awesome but Maka defeating Asura with just one punch after every single one of the most powerful characters in the whole show failed to do so much as to injure him enough to feel a bit of fear even after they surpassed their limits felt very cheap.

Her sudden mastery of the Kishin Hunter Technique and the awakening of her partial weapon transformation didn't do shit but the fact that she was the only one left who people put their hopes on despite being the weakest of the three throwing him off to the point that he could shatter from the fear anytime was ridiculous. It kind of makes sense because of his one severe character flaw but this isn't the spectacle I was expecting to see after everything else they've dished out. The catalyst for her victory being the postcard her mother sent wasn't very pleasing too. At least everyone's happy~

This show was good and it was also very enjoyable. Before I started, I was expecting to rate it a 9 since it looked like something that's right up my alley and Crona's redemption made me think that way even after the really slow start. Then Arachnophobia and Chibi Medusa came and eventually turned to a hard 8 then the final fights happened. I wish I could've watched this during my early years in anime or in my childhood...

SOUL EATER MASTERPIECE FROM BEGINNING TO END

I LOVE SOUL EATER, AND HOW IT WENT DOWN IN THE ANIME (even better than the manga honestly, like Mifune not dying, Justin Law not betraying, Crona not the one to kill Medusa, etc.). NO COMPLAINTS, FANTASTIC JOB !!!

10/10 BEST SCORE ALWAYS AND BEST ANIME, ENGLISH DUB WAS ESPECIALLY AMAZING XDDD

yall are forgetting that Asura was also born from Lord Death and look at Death the Kid, he has severe OCD, doesn't that give something away?

Death the Kid is badass and strong, but asymmetry makes him completely break down, frozen, and beaten. Looks like Asura has a similar mental weakness that would break him down, and defeat him. He tear apart from the inside with the thought of Maka's bravery beating his madness.

It is obvious, Lord Death's offsprings all came with a major defect since they are likely just a fragment of Lord Death, and with Lord Death he is like funny lol

I love soul eater I truly do the animations, soundtracks, characters, story!, Concept everything is so well put together. It has one of the ironic character and my favorite(black★star).

But as bad as I want to give this an 8 I just can't :(

I mean the second half of this episode is like what? It makes me vomit. After such good run they just ruined the ending. I'm so disappointed. Defeating God level asura with just a punch field with courage! Ohh so maka has more courage then shinigami or black star or kid?

My comment is pretty late but anyways, The way I'd explain the ending is that maka weakened asura by confusing him, surely it's no surprise that a god (shinigami) would be brave, but it's a surprise for a weak human to be brave infront of an evil god (kishin), asura got super afraid of things he couldn't understand, so with her bravery maka weakened and confused him, and it would make more sense if the final blow from her meant hitting asura with her soul wavelength just like what black star and stein could do, since she has an anti-magic wavelength it could work after asura was already weak.

I have a question.. Why does everyone call Genie Hunter a wavelength? It's a soul resonance technique, not something in her soul, right? Also, Maka hit Ashura, a Kishin, with the Kishin Hunter and it didn't phase him. Why would a move named for killing a Kishin not kill a Kishin?

OK. How was the Kishin able to defeat Death himself but not able to defeat a 14/15 year old "weak" girl. She was able to kill him with bravery and an ordinary punch. Like WHAT?HOW IN THE?

Personally, I loved this ending. I now it feels cheesy, but the premise of the show, emotions affecting reality via your "soul" and all, was cheesy from the beginning. It followed the rules and laws of the universe set out in the start of the series and that's all I care about.

i suppose it isnt the worst ending for a 2009 anime but the show sure had a big downfall, imo it started to go in a bad direction from medusa ressurection onward. It wasn't a bad show at all, but it definitely got worse as you watched more of it and didnt really added much to make it worth.

After 4 and a half months (I watched this pretty slowly lol) I have finally finished Soul Eater, and even if I have some gripes it was still an incredible anime and I’m glad to have finally experienced it. When it comes to my gripes, the only issues I had were that the 2nd half of the show was not as good as the first half. There were some rushed fights, speaking specifically about the 2nd Medusa fight and the Death versus Asura fight. The Medusa fight had enough time dedicated to it but the ending to the fight wasn’t satisfying imo, I really wanted to see Medusa in despair at her loss and maybe see more of Maka putting her on the fence since most of that fight was Medusa whooping ass, it just paled in comparison to the first Medusa fight imo which was amazing. And when it comes to Death’s fight with Asura I just think it was both too quick and Death losing too easily, later we see Maka, Black Star and Kid tank the same hits that Death wasn’t even able to take one of, so that felt kinda lame to me but there’s probably an explanation for that somewhere. My last gripe is that the place this show ended left too many loose ends, but I know that’s because there’s actually more manga beyond this and it’s just the anime that ends here. Also as a footnote there wasn’t enough Blair in the 2nd half lol.

But that’s where my issues end, this was still a super fun watch. It has so much style and I love the wackiness of it all too, the robot fight near the end was one of my favorite fights in anime lol. It has such good characters that you can’t help but love like Kid and Black Star (tho I know some find him annoying), and I’m a big fan of Maka even though she could be annoying at times, and the weapons of the meisters as well, and not to mention all the unique side characters like Stein, Blair, Mary, Death, and even Excalibur (yes I enjoyed him lol). The villains were also really fun, even though Medusa made you hate her guts she also made things really interesting, and despite Arachnophobia being a huge threat they were actually pretty goofy like the chainsaw guy and Mosquito, and the followers all looked kinda silly with the masks lol, and Asura himself was a bit of a card, especially near the end when he was scared of Maka’s bravery. Speaking of that, I always heard this ending wasn’t good and at first that’s the impression I got but after looking into it a bit more I actually really like it, it’s a pretty fitting end for the show, not incredibly satisfying or anything but it fits. And I can’t forget to mention all the OPs and EDs, both OPs were awesome and all the EDs were amazing, I think my favorite one was the 2nd ED but they all fit their respective arcs for sure.

I know this was a lot of people’s first anime but it sadly took me this long to get to it, thankfully I’m here now and I can say I watched Soul Eater lol. I actually would like to see the rest of the manga get adapted one day, but I think I’ll read it myself later as well. I guess I’ll check out Soul Eater Not too while I’m at it, but man I’m gonna miss this one, 4 and a half months of slow dedication and I gotta say goodbye.

Another anime done, another book sized post lol
