In the last few years the most average shows have got a 7 rating which in terms of MAL's system is "Good" where as the better shows of the 2000-2010 have a 7-8 eating. What is making the difference? Or is 7 the new average whereas 5 is bad.??

the perfect score for an average rating is 5/10

people rating anime to highly doesnt change that or incorrect doesnt change that.
there will always be people that rate something to high or to low

an average is "a number expressing the central or typical value in a set of data, in particular the mode, median, or (most commonly) the mean, which is calculated by dividing the sum of the values in the set by their number."

therefore on a scale from 1 to 10 average is 5

Perfect average score in MAL database?
5/10
But why 6.5~7.2 are average u may ask?
I think it's because MAL users don't usually put 6 or below as average (they may think it's too harsh).
Example would be myself, I rarely put 5 or even 6.
Most people won't follow "MAL scoring system", where is 10 is Masterpiece, 9 is Great, 8 is Very Good and so on.

5 or 6, unfortunatley MAL refuses to let me rate something with 0/10. Then 5/10 would really be the average score.

For me the perfect score for average shows is a 5. I just don't really care about them and they gave me nothing.

"What is the perfect score for average anime?"

5/10

Not sure why there are people using something else than the number in the middle of the range for average.

Just use 5 as average like MAL tells you to. Don't give excuses like "I only start anime I think I'll like", because even then you'll still wind up with an average, and you probably don't realize how much you're underestimating how good the average anime is.

5/10. That's what average means.

A 7 or an 8 are both positive scores, in my metric, indicating that I like a show. If a show is so completely average that I feel absolutely nothing towards it, good or bad, then it's a 5. For example, Akira. There wasn't anything I particularly hated about it, but there wasn't anything I particularly liked either.

1/10 for anything I think is bad or average. 2/10 and up for things I think are good, that way I can be more diverse about things I like. I have no desire to waste so much energy thinking about things I don't like.

Based on MAL's standards, an "average" anime is typically rated as a 5. Shows that are "good" are rated as a 7, whereas those that are "very good" are rated as an 8. I've never rated anime before joining MAL, so I define each of my scores based on MAL's scoring system.

Well, the scoring system here on MAL labeled 5 as average. However, the majority don't have a mean score of 5.00~5.99, 7 and 8 are also being a majority vote of many shows, so here are my hypothesizes.

Hypothesis #1
If you watch every anime, which isn't really possible, but let's say you watch a lot even shows that aren't your type, the mean score should be at 5.00~5.99.

Time is precious, so as mental health, making it's normal for typical watchers (non-critics) to choose shows that are likely to fit their likings, or saying, their preferred type of shows. By doing that, most of the shows they've watched would be 5/10 or above.

Basically, statistics. If you randomly watch any show, then it will be a 50% chance of being a good or a bad one, but watchers select what they watch, so it's more likely to be a good show.

Hypothesis #2
Some people are overly generous, afraid that scoring 6 or below is considered harsh. I also believe that MAL's majority consist of normal or typical watchers, not serious scorers or critics, that's why you see 7 or 8 as a majority vote of many shows. It's really rare to see 6 or 5 as the majority vote.

I used to be a normal watcher, I literally enjoyed almost anything when I was still new to anime, being able to overlook any flaws, so I understand. I don't blame them, and I never. Scores from haters, critics, serious scorers, typical watchers, and overly-generous watchers will balance each other anyway.

Conclusion
It's easy, just score what you feel. If you're a typical watcher, then 7 might be a good mean score for you, but if you think you want to be more serious than that, you can score anime a more seriously as you want, or watch a lot of shows, so it'll be likely that you'll find some bad ones.

I mean, it's not just anime. If you look at imdb and metacritic, their average score seems to be 7/10 as well (Talking about how users rate in there)..Even IGN gives some of their games 7/10 and think it's average.

As for me, I'm sticking with 7/10 as my perfect average score. 6/10 is mediocre and 5 or below is considered bad for me.

People are so dumb when it comes to recognizing differences in rating systems. Idc which one is the "perfect" one. This is entirely subjective. I've seen people who rate a 6 as their 1s, while others rate a 1 as a range of scores from 0-5, and the rest is considered "good" to "masterpiece". It's okay, if you think that's the system you're looking for then whatever suits you.

However, many people can't seem to grasp such a simple concept. "Ouuh a 3.9 avrge what a troll", "if u haet anime so muc y u still watch", "uuhh cunt u raet Stein Gate a 6!!1!" like stfu. So do whatever you want. Of course criticizing one's system, however, is acceptable. Those said comments are from bigots unable to conceive the ideas of rating systems.

So anyway, subjectively, the perfect score for me is a 4.5. Next time you see my average score, don't fucking tell me I'm heartless or some shit.

Even though my mean score is a lil bit lower than the average user, I kinda get why most high profile anime tend to score at least a 7.00 average even if they have a somewhat lukewarm reception.

Most popular anime are well-made.

A lot of users who try for objectivity in their ratings end up with a high average, because recognizing good production leads to most popular anime (the ones with big budgets) getting individual ratings in the 7+ range. I think it was pointed out on an earlier thread that the average anime on this site actually receives something like a 6.5, which suggests most anime outside of the big seasonal shows tend to get rated lower than many would expect from just seeing the most visible shows' results.

Users who rate for enjoyment make sense too. If someone enjoyed an anime, even if it falls around the middle of the pack for their preferences, who am I to say they should rate it a 5? They had a positive experience, if a 7 or higher is the rating they'd prefer to give an anime (even if it isn't in the right percentile/standard deviation of the anime they like or whatever), I'm happy with that decision.

With that in mind, even though I prefer to rate my "average" anime with 5s, I don't mind the mean scores on this site being a bit higher than they should be in a perfect mathematical sense.

5/10 since it is basically a midpoint and classed as average on the scoring system

Funny how Tokyo Ghoul is my only 5 and I don't know what differs it from my animes rated as 6. 6 for me are like "good, but...", well, they aren't so entertaining but also they were not full waste of time.
I consider 4- as waste of time. But about rating 5, I'll think about what makes an anime average.

Average in a normative sense means a show that either has nothing standing out as either positve or negative or a show where the positives and negatives balance each other out.

Well *shocker* - if people find positive aspects in a show they rate it higher. Even more of a *shocker* the audience of this site mainly consists of anime fans - that means people who tend to enjoy anime. Is it really all that surprising that the ratings tend to favor the positive end of the spectrum?

I know from myself that it feels hard to give a show that you medium enjoyed a 5, because a 5 feels lower somehow lower than average

Since MAL is based on an 1-10 scale, 5.5 would be my average, but as you can only vote in whole numbers here, so 5-6 it is. 5, when the anime has a tendency for the worse and 6, when the anime has the tendency for the better.
And in MAL's overall mean rating, I would cite (even if it's not that accurate) the mean score of anime.plus with ~6.61.

6 or 7
Assuming 1/10 is not just a bad show, but an experience you want to erase from your memory, brought you infinite pain, no happiness, made you even consider gouging out your eyeballs out of fear given the sin committed in front of you, and critically analyze the idea mutilating your genitals so that any future child of yours would not have exist in the same plane of the reality as said show.
Just a thought.

To me, it's either a 5 or 6 depending on circumstances.

And that 5 or 6 typically signifies one of two possibilities - that it was "average" in the sense of being fairly "meh" or plain, uninspired, by the book with nothing more worthwhile to make it more appealing or interesting, etc. Or it can have many positive attributes which make it stand out but also simultaneously many noticeable and pronounced negative aspects which detract and take away from it. Those are two very different scenarios in my mind, but they both can receive a similar or even identical score for different reasons.

Most anime I watch however, as in my most frequently utilized rating, fall into the "7" camp though, which to me translates to "a good story I consider definitely worthy of being made and worthwhile of having watched".

Most of what I watch I consider a 7 because I usually select fairly accurately for myself shows I know I'm likely to enjoy and am already grabbed by the synopsis of.

I almost never utilize 3s and 4s (I believe I may only have one 3) and don't use 1s and 2s at all. I would say it's both because I consider myself a rather generous grader (not just in anime, but in general) and because I'm interested in a lot of different stories/ideas/topics/genres/etc. so even something heavily flawed in ways I can point out or which frustrate me personally I'm usually still glad for having watched to some extent and include details within I can still appreciate.

an average anime is opinion based. due to this, it depends on the number of people who rate it above 5 and below 5. Even if the anime is "average" the score won't portray that, but rather how many 4,5,6,7s it gets. I personally rate anime based on watchability, 6+ watchable, 5- don't give it the time of day, it was torture.

Since 0's aren't possible, somewhere in the ballpark of 6 would be pretty reasonable. For reference, my average anime rating is 6.18, and I tend to consider my harsher on the ratings than most. And even for me, I mostly rate in the 6 or 7 range.

5/10 is the score for a completely average anime. Average scores tend to gravitate higher than what they should because most viewers will seek out anime they're relatively sure they'll like and won't watch something if the description sounds bad.
