The fear of the unknown is an intense fear especially in regards to death. So I pose the question: Does not knowing what's after death make you afraid of dying?

Personally it terrifies me. I grew up very Christian and they instilled the fear of hell into me big time. Either that or after death is nothing which is also terrifying.

What about you? How afraid of the unknown are you?

the possibilty of nothing happening after death scares me quite a bit, you just disappear and all your memories of life are gone

No, because nothing happens. Instead of concerning myself of what will happen to me after I have passed, I am more interested in what happens to others once I have passed. For example, if one has children, that is a fear to worry about after death.

It's oddly humbling to me, in a way. Because no matter how much influence you gain, or peoples lives you change, or inner peace you achieve, everything, from the largest of galaxy superclusters to the quarks that make up your body, will, at some point in the future, disappear and return to absolute zero.

Considering that I cannot imagine anything surviving the end of consciousness, I do not fear anything beyond death. The idea that nothing happens after death is a reassuring one actually, it permits to value this life (and therefore, the only one) more, and to stop thinking too much about suicide.

Although I cannot believe a second about those things, the idea of Hell in Christianity would suit me perfectly since I was not baptised. I would therefore end up in the First Circle of Hell and be able to speak with all the great minds and heroes of Ancient Greece according to Dante; impossible to expect a better outcome. I cannot wait to see the reactions of Euclid, Plato and Aristotle when they hear about the last advances of mathematics and science!

On the other hand, the idea of Paradise would not please me that much...

"Hope is but a charlatan that ceases not to deceive us. For myself happiness only began when I had lost it. I would fain inscribe upon the gate of Paradise the line that Dante wrote upon that of Hell: "Lasciate ogni speranza, voi ch'entrate."
Chamfort.

"L’espérance n’est qu’un charlatan qui nous trompe sans cesse. Et pour moi, le bonheur n’a commencé que lorsque je l’ai eu perdue. Je mettrais volontiers sur la porte du Paradis le vers que le Dante a mis sur celle de l’Enfer : "Lasciate ogni speranza, voi ch’entrate."
Chamfort, Maximes.

Well, we all eventually find out, what lies there, it's not like you the only one (OP) who's going "there", so don't need to worry about it.

I think there is no "beyond death", there is only death. You die and nothing happens after. Nothingness does not terrify me, as there is nothing that can terrify me.

I've though about that a lot. I would be lying if i said i don't fear death at least a little bit. However i don't really have any strong attachments to my current life, so i don't mind dying that much and i'm not really afraid of what lies after. Actually, i kinda look foward to it. Maybe i'll go to hell, maybe i'll reincarnate into another idiot's body or simply vanish. Either way i'm really curious about what will happen. My true fear is dying in a really stupid way after working really hard, which is why i behave so carefree and lazy most of the time.

It is faith that makes one believe that one is going to die.
It is true that one is going to die.
Death is only a question of faith.
What many take as fear of death, is really the fear of immortality, that death will be postponed indefinitely.
Because what stops a writer from writing is the fear of writing itself.

No, but I guess almost dying a few times does that to a fella. Coupled with my religious beliefs, I realize that any of my fears regarding death and the afterlife are natural, but at least partially counterproductive.

I love my life of course, so I do enjoy being alive and want to be for as long as I can. But I don't see any point in wasting time dwelling on an inevitability. It's death. It happens and if worrying changed anything, then I'd be worrying all the time. But it doesn't so might as well worry about things I can change

As someone who believes in the afterlife I do somehow apprehend it but I'd take that over death just being the end of it all since I find that to be a depressing thought.

death does not need to be frightening, it is simply a part of life.

“Do not fear death. Death is always at our side. When we show fear, it jumps at us faster than light, but if we do not show fear, it casts its eye upon us gently and then guides us into infinity...” ~ Spike Spiegel

especially if you have the comfort of your Christian faith.

@149597871 2 deep 5 me

@KafkaKamakura That's a good way to frame things, everyone is equal in death.

@Young_Carti That's the thing about hell, if it exists I will most likely avoid it.

If it's just nothing, like the time before you were born, then that's a scary thought indeed. Just wiped out of existence, like you don't matter at all.

But I am not afraid, everyone dies, why would I be afraid of something so fundamental to life. And who knows, there might be something after death. Part of me is curious and can't wait to see what's there.

And any religious stuff I'm not afraid of at all, humans made it up, it's complete nonsense. Why on Earth would beings bigger than the universe itself give a flying fuck about prayers and all that shite.

I've said this in another thread, but I'm terrified if you're still aware, end up knowing you've died and you're stuck in a black void of literally nothingness. Eternal boredom, and all you can do is think about regrets and worry.

Don't know how I can explain in. Because it's death!

I'll bet my nonexistent life insurance policy that reincarnation is a thing and that you'll just live life again from square one with no prior knowledge of your previous life and you'll have to relearn and redo everything you've done before.

...thus, Hell exists.

I worry sometimes, as an agnostic it’s just kind of a “who knows?” mentality I have. But it’s behind my control, so I really just have to remember that it doesn’t matter. It’s probably nothing anyways. Besides, whatever it is it can’t be worse than sophomore year of high school.

As a Christian, I don't fear death nor what lies beyond it, I could drop dead right now and have firm faith that I will wake up again.

Also, from what I understood - there's only 2 things that will happen, either eternal life or nothingness. We won't be forced off our own will to live forever.
Hell is just a tool for religion to control people.

Everybody has their own point of view. There's 2 things I believe will happen.

1) You go to heaven or hell (As a Christian, I believe this)

Or

2) You get reincarnated with all your memories of past life gone (This would be cool if it's true)

I see answers like "nothingness" in this thread. The thought of it terrifies me but I also think it's ridiculous. Like, what's the point of it?

I have so many questions about this world and universe. I'm a person with open minded mind but if you say there's no God I would just stare at you blankly because without God, nothing makes sense. How do humans suddenly exist out of nowhere?

All of this are humbly my opinions. Of course, I respect other people's opinions too. And to answer the question, no I'm not afraid of what lies beyond death because I have faith in what I believe will happen.

Didn't realize I wrote so long. Probably because I'm so interested on the topic of afterlife.

Anyway if you actually read all of this you're awesome. Have a nice day/night.

I am too busy with other things to think about this. So I don't fear it. Fear here seems more like something for old or ill peple - where death is imminent. (Or if someone close to you died and you want ot believe he still exists.) Sometimes people then turn to religion - to counter the fear.

Not really. I'm reasonably sure that my consciousness will be terminated after I die. But hey, if there was an afterlife, it would be a bonus, no? Now, perhaps there's eternal punishment waiting for people of a certain sort. Well, no point in worrying about it unless someone can prove to me that such an afterlife exists, and that the requirements to avoid a bad afterlife are such and such. If I cannot know the requirements for avoiding an afterlife of suffering, then I cannot take any action to meet those requirements. Therefore stressing over it is fruitless.
