The broadcast of The iDOLM@STER Mirishita 3rd Anniversary!! Challenge Tomorrow! Anniversary Live! on Saturday announced that the popular The iDOLM@STER Million Live! mobile game will receive a TV anime adaption.

The game was published by Bandai Namco Entertainment in February 2013 on Android and in December 2014 on iOS. It was shut down in March 2019 and content and updates were moved to the then new title Theatre Days, which was released in 2017. The 37 new idols who appeared in The iDOLM@STER Million Live! were also featured in the LIVE THE@TER CDs.

Shinya Watada (Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise) will be helming the series at the animation studio Shirogumi and Youichi Katou (Youkai Watch!) will be in charge of the script and series composition.

Bandai Namco Entertainment's The iDOLM@STER is a multimedia franchise that began with an arcade game in 2005. The first anime series in the franchise, iDOLM@STER Xenoglossia, was produced by Sunrise and aired for 26 episodes in 2007. It was followed by more faithful adaptations of the games in the form of TV anime, movies, OVAs, and specials. Notable adaptations include A-1 Pictures' The iDOLM@STER—the franchise's first full-length TV anime adaptation—in 2011 and The iDOLM@STER Side M in 2018.

Words cannot describe how happy I am seeing Million Live finally adapted. I'm still a bit hesitant toward the CGI nature of the PV, but the highly stylized visuals and the Aikatsu leverage could make the anime work. It's a departure from A-1 and Nishigori's 2011 adaptation aesthetic, but I can live with it. My main concerns are whether the anime can handle the cast of 39 characters from the Million Live branch, in addition to possibly including the original 13 of 765PRO, as both are part of the same game. Other issues would be which canon the anime will follow (first or second Million Live game, one of the manga, anime original, etc) and the show length with respect to how many characters are needed to balance.

EDIT: Come to think of it, Theater Days is also completely CG, so if anything the anime should just be a step up from the game itself. The best thing to do would probably be treating the OG iDOLM@STER anime as something separate from Million Live, as to not have the wrong expectations.

I may have to skip due to the possibility of being an all CG anime, wth Bamco? Part of the charm of Idolm@ster anime is the lack of CG, giving to an all CG studio makes no sense.

ML is far and beyond my favourite branch of im@s, so I'm incredibly excited for something I had at this point entirely written off as improbable. As the years went on it seemed more and more likely that ML would get shafted in favour of SC as it's growing more and more in popularity these days, but here we are. The joke is actually over.

The CGI I'm a bit iffy on. All things considered it looks OK, but as a huge ML fan it did feel off seeing the stoplight trio in this style. It will definitely take a bit of getting used to. Some anime (like ID-0) really are elevated through its full use of CGI, but in cases like LL it's noticeably jarring and close to unwatchable whenever it pops up. It will be interesting to see how it'll be handled, but I have a strong feeling that the performance sections will look far better than the office/general parts of the anime. Still, I think my love for the franchise will win out in the end. Just seeing the performance and choreography of some of the songs I've listened to hundreds upon hundreds of times will be magical no matter what.

Well, lately I've definitely been more into Bandori than IMAS, but I'm still happy with any franchise news, since CG was my favorite Idol show.

The 4th anniversary PV was such a huge tease. But it's finally here!
Not a huge fan of CGI. I liked that the original series didn't use it for the performances. But we've been waiting so long.

Oh cool, they're finally properly adapting Million Live. I enjoyed Idolmaster, although it felt a bit rushed, and I also enjoyed Cinderella Girls, although it felt like a lot of fluff, but since Million Live shares a lot of the cast of Idolmaster I might be able to enjoy it more with the familiar faces and personalities as well as having additional cast members to be introduced to and explore fanart of.

I don't care what anyone says, that CGi looks extremely good. There's nothing inherently wrong with 3DCG, especially if it's good as that trailer. A stylistic translation of 2D-to-3D, smooth at certain moments but the animation knows when to be snappy in order of conveying specific motions, as someone who is an animation nerd it pleases me. Maybe it doesn't please everyone, but I know there are people out there that it does please. The art and animation were both perfected in what it aimed to be and I wouldn't want it any other way. 3DCGi in anime, no, animated television series is clearly evolving for the better.

The issue isn't that it's bad in any way, but rather that it's something distinctly different that will take time getting used to. I've looked at their card designs and mirishita models more or less every day for a couple of years now and this shift in style clearly feels off to me. The part where Shizuka smiles is the best example of this. Stylistically it looks nice and snappy, and you can clearly tell they put a lot of effort into making it, but the fact remains that you can tell it's Shizuka but with a strange facial composition that deviates too much from her original design. The eyes also remind me too much of LL which is something I've never liked.

Note that I'm not against CGI in general. I think the anime will look great to newcomers and casual fans, but for those of us who live and breathe ML this style is a long shot from what we would've preferred. Take a look at the Dreaming! PV for an example of the route I wanted an adaptation to take.

Well, I don’t have any reason to call myself an old Bandori fan, but I’ve already gotten used to this franchise, especially Roselia and HaruHappi. It already seems to me that soon I will use up all the guaranteed opportunities to get stars and I will have to complete each song on hard full combo.

Well, Bandori was my first mobile game of this type and it took me 3-4 months to make full combo in any song on medium difficulty. So, I can’t say whether it is a lot or a little.

Watada as director for an Imas show is such an obscure choice. He did work on the Sunrise Idol shows Love Live and Aikatsu though, so it kinda makes sense, but he is obviously more known for his Gundam stuff. He is not a bad director though, so I would assume, that the show is in good hands. CG looks alright, not as akward as say Revisions or Sidonia.

I still miss the 2d hand drawn style of animation.
I really expect to see a new 2d style of live or animation about idolm@ster.
