| If you have ever seen a high-definition transfer of anime from the 70s, 80s, or 90s, then you know how tremendous a difference an HD release can make. It truly brings out the best in the beautiful artistry of the older movies and series. Lately we have been seeing more and more older anime brought to the Blu-ray format, which has given long time viewers a reason to re-watch their old favorites, and new anime fans a reason to explore the classics. In my opinion it's the single best thing to have happened in the industry this decade. So I ask you, what anime do you feel deserves the full HD treatment? Which anime do you feel would benefit the most and why? Or are you still behind the times and watching anime in icky standard definition? |

| Honestly don't know, I hope those 80s and 90s anime some do get the royal treatment. Look I am happy about: Gegege no Kitarou, Slayers Dororo, Hunter x Hunter 2011 Young black jack, Grappler Baki Boogiepop, Cardcaptor Sakura Saiyuuki, Hell girl Kino, Sailor Moon Fruits Basket, Majutsushi Orphen: Revenge JoJo's Bizarre Adventure And any other anime that got or is getting the well deserved treatment. Actually, to me these are the classics everyone complained about in the 2010s were missing. Anime like SAO, SNK, S:G and others will be the new classics in the 2020s. |

Decide once every certain number of years which members of the ruling class will oppress and crush the people in parliament: this is the true essence of bourgeois parliamentarism, not only in the constitutional parliamentary monarchies but in the most democratic republics - The State and Revolution (September 1917), Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov "Lenin". |

| I don't think it matters at all for older pre-2000 shows to be honest I don't see the difference. They are advantageous though because Blu-rays take up less space on my shelves. Newer shows are a different story, I do think BD enhances those a little if they are not just a bad upscale. Blast of Tempest (Zetsuen no Tempest) only got a sub only DVD release here, that could definitely use a Blu-ray and dub too. |

HeruruMeruru said: Thinking through it some more, I bet that has more to do with the studio involved than anything. Sunrise is much more reliable than Madhouse when it comes to Blu-Ray releases of their older series. For example, Madhouse still hasn't brought us remasters of Monster, Hajime no Ippo, Texhnolyze, and Kaiji. All major releases very much deserving to be seen in the highest quality possible. It's really a crime that Monster hasn't been remastered and has such limited availability. And with Texhnolyze, the current release positively does not do the beautiful artwork justice. There is still some hope though as the original Boogiepop Phantom will be coming to Blu-Ray by the end of the year, so maybe they still have plans for their other big series. |

| Many of the pre-2000 shows I'd be interested in have already gotten remasters, but there are a few out there: Rurouni Kenshin TV -- could be controversial due to author's legal troubles Eden's Bowy -- haunting and deeply uneven series, remaster could look great, or reveal more flaws Crest of the Stars -- could have a good chance as a Sunrise series, though I believe the sequels are digipaint Princess Nine -- sports anime that was better than it ever had a right to be Video Girl Ai -- some experimental visuals in this iconic 90s romance OVA Unfortunately, a lot of the Blu-Rays out there for pre-2000 titles have been digitally upscaled from analog masters, instead of rescanned and remastered from the film stock. Either because the film was lost/damaged, or they figured they could make more money with a cheaper upscale. Short_Circut said: Those would be remakes you're looking for, which are... not what this thread is about. Would be a treat in HD. Kino's Journey is squarely within the SD digipaint era, which was known for its washed-out colors and lack of detail. titles from that era (~2000-2006) can't be remastered the way older cel/film productions can -- Even an upscaled, HD Blu-Ray release wouldn't necessarily be that much better in terms of color/detail. In theory, SD Blu-Rays offer an upgrade over DVDs, due to more space, better encoding methods, and better audio formats being available. Unfortunately, Sentai Filmworks haven't quite figured things out when authoring SD-BD. notfunnyDfactzzz said: HD releases were still more of the exception than the rule for 2006 anime. Would be a treat in HD. Agreed as well. I feel a proper use of colour with at least more exhuberance and contrast can particularly enhance the sort of experience that Kino no Tabi offers (that of exploration and finding different lifestyles and cultures), a washed out palette is more detrimental than it is good for its purpose. I think the 2017 series understood that and tried to apply that principle, but the colours couldn't feel natural and organic. |

| This makes me wonder, how was most Japanese anime produced pre-digital era? Since the thing is, that unless the shows were originally mastered in a format (most likely film) that transfers well to HD it wouldn't benefit from an HD re-release at all unless it was completely remastered from the cells. Here is a rather informative video on the subject, it's about live action video but I would assume the same things apply to animation as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVpABCxiDaU |
