Been watching Galaxy Express 999. (TV Series) It's been one I've had an interest in for a long time, but the episode count of 113 is pretty intimidating for me as someone who doesn't typically watch long running anime.

Come to think of it, maybe that's changing. I'm currently watching Maison Ikkoku, which has 90-something episodes. I'm also rewatching Dragon Ball Z, which has nearly 300. Huh.

Completing Maison Ikkoku may be the most likely candidate for "Rite of Passage," if this club had one :)

I haven't even started it yet :D

@ASTARISUU Golden Boy is a thing to behold. Apparently the English dub is enjoyable too, I want to rewatch it that way. (Technically it's a year past the group cutoff, but that's only for group definition / anime connections purposes https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1384392#msg47139039 )

I recently watched this:
https://myanimelist.net/anime/28245/Ari-chan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6JwONOd_7I

Interesting that the Ministry of Education was funding animation in 1941. I'm not sure how this was intended to be educational - it doesn't teach about real insects, and there isn't a strong Aesop. It's a pretty enjoyable short though.

After that, MAL lists some war propaganda:
https://myanimelist.net/anime/23969/Fuku-chan_no_Kishuu
https://myanimelist.net/anime/23971/Fuku-chan_no_Zousan_Butai
https://myanimelist.net/anime/27575/Spy_Gekimetsu
https://myanimelist.net/anime/29782/Malay_Oki_Kaisen
https://myanimelist.net/anime/6857/Momotarou_no_Umiwashi
https://myanimelist.net/anime/7523/Fuku-chan_no_Sensuikan <- Interesting synopsis
https://myanimelist.net/anime/2765/Momotarou__Umi_no_Shinpei

This came out in 1943 and doesn't seem to be propaganda:
https://myanimelist.net/anime/3990/Kumo_to_Tulip

After the war MAL shows nothing until these in 1947:
https://myanimelist.net/anime/5662/Suteneko_Tora-chan
https://myanimelist.net/anime/29895/Muku_no_Ki_no_Hanashi

But Wikipedia shows several more anime that aren't on MAL:
List of anime by release date (1939–1945)
List of anime by release date (1946–1959)

Sometimes you just can't work with URLs on MAL because of parentheses -_-
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_anime_by_release_date_(1939–1945)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_anime_by_release_date_(1946–1959)

@ASTARISUU Officially "Old School" here means anime from the beginning through 1994, but we routinely talk about later shows as well.

There are some outright terrible dubs that seem like they'd be fun to watch, Devilman for instance. In my PTW under recommended dubs I also have FLCL (seen), Desert Punk (not seen), and this (see the reviews) https://myanimelist.net/anime/1281/Gakkou_no_Kaidan

Finished Maison Ikkoku. 7/10 on my list, so not bad. Went on too long for its own good and too many misunderstandings due to Godai's pathetic inability to say what he wants to say. Still, 7/10 is good for me, being that my average right now is like 5.2

Was thinking of starting Kimagure Orange Road, but I'm kind of romance'd out now. Might try to find something more action based and fast paced.

That's worrying, that kind of thing seems to frustrate me more than most people.

@ASTARISUU I don't know, I haven't seen Speed Racer or heard anything about the dub :)

I watched https://myanimelist.net/anime/1824/Hadashi_no_Gen after first hearing of it in the group chat last year:

@Andrei_Rublev | Nov 5, 2017 6:29 PM
I reccomend Barefoot Gen which is probably my favorite anime film. Grave of The Fireflys is also really popular but I didnt like it very much.

Now, here's my conversation about Grave of the Fireflies with @TeKSMeLater:

nDroae | Aug 2, 2017 10:52 PM
Ah, Grave of the Fireflies... very good, but dependent on being able to tolerate the boy's pride. [Grave of the Fireflies spoilers at link] https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1kjrop/grave_of_the_fireflies_regarding_the_intended/ I don't think the viewer is supposed to resent him, but I did. :D

TeKSMeLater | Aug 2, 2017 11:36 PM
I remember seeing that opinion before, and I totally agree. I still felt the film was good if you consider the other aspects, but yeah, the guy is the one glaring flaw of the film. His pride is more important than his sister's safety.

nDroae | Aug 3, 2017 12:03 AM
It's definitely an interesting and unusual case, the author trying to do penance for his own guilt over his sister. I'm not sure how best to approach or appraise the film, because of that. Normally, one either wouldn't have such a character be the protagonist (example: that guy in Shirobako [Tarou, incompetent jerk meant to represent Shirobako's director when he was younger]), or would have them go through some sort of redemptive growth arc. Thinking about WWII films, most would probably agree that Schindler's List's subject matter is a technically worse atrocity, but that film is uplifting... and I will always prefer that, a preference which inescapably tarnishes my ability to appreciate good storytelling. :P

I liked Barefoot Gen much more, simply because the MC was an alright kid and did his best in the situation. Every single character could have died by the end and I still would have liked it more, because of that.

Considering Grave of the Fireflies as a portrait of the tragic consequences of human nature, Admiral Holdo vs. Poe in The Last Jedi seems comparable in terms of audience receptivity. I liked that movie overall (only seen it once), but I can't see myself ever seeing Holdo's leadership decisions as justifiable. Even if I try to look at it as a tragedy of human nature, the film paints her as a blameless heroine, and that left a bad taste. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLqLQvTbo-Y&feature=youtu.be&t=16m33s

Recent sequence of events: I asked for classics with great soundtracks, was recommended https://myanimelist.net/anime/1285/Soukihei_MD_Geist (which does have good music), I read this:
busterbeam said:
they used to not license generic crap back then, so when a show that was just bland and forgettable came out in the West, among all the Akiras, Yamatos and Robot Carnivals it just seemed irredeemably shitty.

So I watched Robot Carnival. https://myanimelist.net/anime/2182/Robot_Carnival

It's an anthology of short films, most of them dialog-free, and it's well worth watching. It is, as one review describes, comparable to Disney's Fantasia, but with original music, some of it by Joe Hisaishi. It mainly alternates between action and slow, thoughtful pieces. The most popular part is probably "Deprive," which is pure 80's hype in visuals and music, directed by https://myanimelist.net/people/10958/Hidetoshi_Oomori Another highlight is a clumsy battle between wooden mechs set in the early Showa era.

@Boltz you need to see this :)

It's on Crunchyroll for people in the US and probably Canada, I can't find any announcement to see if it's available anywhere else, but I doubt it. http://www.crunchyroll.com/robot-carnival Diskotek just put out the first ever R1 BD in March.

I wouldn't be surprised if you saw it a long time ago and had forgotten to list it :) Turns out MusicBrainz Picard's database was wrong and Hisaishi actually did most of the music, even the 80's rock, and I LOVE that he did it. :D

https://www.awn.com/animationworld/will-real-joe-hisaishi-please-stand
Hisaishi also wrote most of the music for the 1987 OAV anthology Robot Carnival (the big exception is the 'Cloud' sequence). Recommended to readers who want a better idea of Hisaishi's repertoire, the score slides easily from rock and synthesized pieces (check out the pulpy 'Deprive' and inventive 'Tale of Two Robots'), to orchestral music (the brassy opening fanfare) and delicate piano for the poetic 'Presence,' a brilliantly directed segment by Yasuomi Ometsu.

I went to MAL's Music genre page and sorted it chronologically to find the oldest music-themed series (that is, not one-offs) in the database, here they are:

1. https://myanimelist.net/anime/3819/Sasurai_no_Taiyou

2. https://myanimelist.net/anime/17423/Pink_Lady_Monogatari__Eikou_no_Tenshi-tachi
English fansite (of the real pop duo the anime is about) http://www.pinkladyamerica.com/pinkanime.html

3. https://myanimelist.net/anime/8777/Nobara_no_Julie
4. https://myanimelist.net/anime/32630/Coral_no_Tanken
5. https://myanimelist.net/anime/9906/Sue_Cat
6. SDF Macross. :P I was surprised that there were so few before Macross.

Also discovered this 1-hour 1982 film: https://myanimelist.net/anime/1049/Cello_Hiki_no_Gauche_1982
(Source material: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauche_the_Cellist )
People seem to discover it via the Ghibli "Producer" credit, but the studio was Oh! Production, with Isao Takahata directing. One of the two alternative versions listed is a 1963 puppet animation.

I watched it, good stuff. Felt like a story from Aesop's Fables or the Book of Virtues. I would have liked to see one of the cellist's animal aides be a cicada. Cicada sounds may be the most widely used "instrument" in anime ;)

I just put together an achievable list of shows to watch next year, starting in January. Some of these have been PTW since the 2000's. Everything in it from 1970 onward I intend to complete eventually. Those marked "partial" I may put on hold after a cour/arc or two, or I may keep going, I'll make that decision once I'm watching them.

63 Astro Boy (partial)
66 Speed Racer (partial)
71 Lupin III part 1
77 Harlock
77 Lupin III part 2 (partial)
78 Future Boy Conan
79 Akage no Anne (possibly partial - I loved the books, so I hope I'll love this)
Edit to add: 82 Space Cobra
83 Votoms
84 Fist of the North Star (partial)
85 Dirty Pair
86 Saint Seiya (partial)
86 Maison Ikkoku
87 Kimagure Orange Road
87 City Hunter (partial)
93 The Irresponsible Captain Tylor
94 Magic Knight Rayearth
95 The Slayers
96 Martian Successor Nadesico
97 Utena
99 GTO

I'm currently watching Dororo to Hyakkimaru. It was actually one I started years ago but all the episodes had not been subbed at the time. Now that I'm back into anime after a little hiatus I was delighted to see all the episodes have now been subbed, so I've started that over. Enjoying it so far.

Ya there's a few little plot things I've had to set aside but for the most part I've really enjoyed it so far. It's definitely something that could use a little more love, not even a thousand users on MAL... bit shocking.

Conjecturally, if one in ten serious modern anime fans use MAL, maybe one in fifty classic anime fans use it? I get the feeling the difference is something like that. :D

It's nice to see that there are eight reviews from the last two years here on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Dororo-Complete-Anime-Minori-MATSUSHIMA/dp/B01CVS4PYK/

However, one of them is this amusing gem:
Retarded. Anime has come so far!
The silly live action movie, so reviled by some, is light years above this unbearably simplistic series. Do adults think it's beneficial to show their kids stupid cartoons? Skip it.

Currently watching Uchuu Senkan Yamato III.
The first 11 episodes were here and there... I liked the story parts, but there was just way too much focus on action. It was also a bit weird when they skip certain important story parts, but kept random SOS calls which they weren't supposed to check anyways - they are on a mission to save Earth but help random people in the galaxy - just a bit weird.

But the anime is still very good. I feel like after the brilliant movie sequels to 2nd season, they need some break from the story, so they just focus on action now.
I cannot wait to see more

Ashita no Joe and Ranma 1/2 are two old school shows I'm currently watching. Very different types of shows - with about a decade or so between each I believe - but they both rock so far. Only about a dozen or so episodes into each. Ranma I've know about for many years yet only now am getting around to it (thanks to watching a few eps on Hulu and liking what I saw). Have not read the manga but anything based off Rumiko Takahashi's work is usually amazing.
Ashita no Joe is also one I've heard good things about before but it took watching the new series Megalobox to really convince me to give it a shot. Glad I did!

Yeah Ashita no Joe is a ride, hope you haven't been too spoiled about it like me since it can be referenced a lot in newer anime. Enjoy man.
