I hate trigger so much, they piss me off to no end, but I hate them because I like them as well, and I am disappointed that they never reach their full potential. Their original shows are always created with such brimming creativity and style with interesting settings and characters but they ALWAYS lose their focus and their shows fall apart, usually midway through. Even shorts like Ninja Slayer and Luluco lose their steam once the show has past the point of their original premise and they have to resort to second rate material to keep the show going, and that's the biggest issue I have. When they're not at their best, they seem to fall into a comfortable habit of recalling their "gainax" experience. Every mech fight they've done so far are one off episode shits, that's just them trying to emulate TTGL with uninspired style and fighting spirit. That they try to build this image through reoccuring elements such as their four pointed star only brings their subsequent works down. They just need to take a little more time preparing the series before hand, these LWA episodes are failing to merge together these character episodes with the main story in a way that is both transitionless and charming. I think if they were to attempt a short OVA series, something along the lines of FLCL, it'll help them figure out how out to keep a story together and have it well paced through the entirity of its run time.

I apologize for this.

It's either this or I go back to the bottle, arguable which would be more expensive.

There's legitimacy behind your triggering, I understand your opinion.

Except I don't see how KlK or LWA resort to second rate material to keep the show going. Can you elaborate ?

You can't go around talking shit about everyone's favourite studio.
Putting that aside, I totally agree with you, trigger can't make a proper storyline in either of their original anime.
Little Witch Academia is now downright a pain in the ass to watch, I've been thinking about dropping it myself. The last episode especially hit me hard with the ttgl reference, it just showed how unoriginal trigger can be sometimes.

I can't really talk about KlK as I've only seen 5 eps or so, I can tell some second rate material.
If you follow the show, you can see that so far there were like 4-5 events (didn't check, could be less) like festivals and tournaments in it, always with a bit different setting, but essentially the same story.
Not to talk about Akko continously finding rare items and spells to deus ex machina her way out of the mess she somehow always gets herself into.
And when the story just doesn't go well, Trigger pulls off some jokes to cover the inconsistency.
This is my opinion anyways.

No I can not, I have poor memory management. oryouohagi's comment does contain points I agree with though.

While the 2 graphs do not fully support my opinion, they feature a stagnation between a usually bombastic and promosing first episode and the end.

Can you please expensify what you mean by "always losing focus"? Even after reading your post a couple of times i still don't understand your main complaints.

Trigger series usually follow a pretty consistent formula: first half is very episodic and serve the propose of giving characterization to all the characters as well as world building; while in the second half the tone shifts and we get to know what is the ingame goal. Everything normally ties perfectly well together.

On the topic of references, Trigger does love to pay a lot of homage to Gainax every so often yes, however they dont make the references the whole core of the show so i don't see why you would be so bothersome by them.

It's kind of weird, I like Trigger for the same reasons they piss you off.

"Their original shows are always created with such brimming creativity and style with interesting settings and characters but they ALWAYS lose their focus and their shows fall apart, usually midway through."

I can't recall either Kiznaiver or KLK falling apart at the midway point, if anything, that was the point that KLK upshifted into an actual story beyond episodic entertainment, and Kiznaiver worked on the most significant arc in the series.

"When they're not at their best, they seem to fall into a comfortable habit of recalling their "gainax" experience."
That shouldn't be a massive surprise. Most of Studio Trigger worked on Silver-age Gainax hits like FLCL, TTGL, and Panty & Stocking. These people know what they like to work on, and they focus on that.

"That they try to build this image through reoccuring elements such as their four pointed star only brings their subsequent works down."
Funny, I think this is great, because it showcases connectivity between the works. Granted, it's not like inter-studio Easter Eggs like this will actually have an effect on the quality of the works.

"I think if they were to attempt a short OVA series, something along the lines of FLCL, it'll help them figure out how out to keep a story together and have it well paced through the entirity of its run time."
The era of OVA's like what produced Gunbuster and FLCL is over, and it's unlikely we'll return to that era anytime soon. Such an investment would likely not bring them any monetary gain.
With that said, LWA started as two 30-minute OVA episode/movie things, if that's what you are looking for.

from my perspective studio Trigger isn't really losing focus but they are definately very inconsistent with their projects. When they're not doing big projects like Little Witch Academia, Kill La Kill or Kiznavier , they seem to lose track of their goal and start literally producing anime that belong in a trash can. notable examples: Inferno Cop, Luluco and Ninja Slayers.
Studio Trigger is a fairly new studio which could explain this, but incompetency is not an excuse in a professional business industry, as they are competing against dozens of other professional studios.

That's like, your opinion, man. Inferno Cop was a 13 eps short web show, it cost them absolutely nothing, it's something you won't find anywhere else, and given how often it's mentionned here, I'd say it was probably their best investment yet.

lol i did state 'from my perspective' therefore my opinion?? it might not have cost them much monetary funds, but it did drastically affect their reputation in the anime industry internally. Like Studio Trigger is like known for their ups and downs in producing anime, it affects their sponsors because they don't want to be associated with a bad studio, bad staff because all the good ones will avoid Trigger and go work for another studio, not enough sponsors means not enough budget for big projects, list goes on. Basically a business just doesn't only aim to make profit but also for a good reputation especially in asian countries.

@BakaKuro Saying they "literally" belonged in the trash defeated the point of stating that it was just your opinion.

Anyway, I'm not the guys behind Trigger and you aren't either. I'm pretty sure they left Gainax because they had their own idea of what they wanted to do and how they wanted to do it, they probably wouldn't listen to your management advices, or mine.

Inferno Cop and Ninja Slayer aside, what's so bad about Luluco that makes it belong in a trash can?

The long freaking wall of text that hurts my eyes and is not formatted in an easily digestible manner aside, yeah. I agree with you.|

Trigger are extremely overrated, their shows are definitely brimming with creativity and unique visuals but ultimately fall flat in many aspects.
Ironically enough every show of theirs ''loses it's way'' *nerdy snort accompanied by awkward laughter*...

Kill La Kill is not deep at all, it's just a mindless action with amazing visuals and fan service, whoever sees something more in it is a pretentious snowflake.

Kiznaiver was forced melodrama, extremely forced melodrama... but oh well, the horrendous Mari Okada got her hands on it so it never had a future anyways.

LWA is okay-ish for what it is but it's really just a simple show about cute girls doing their thing.

I really can't see how they're saving anime.

Highly disagree on the point of KLK, but I'm curious to see if you'd even be willing to listen to anyone who sees 'more' in the series, or if you're just writing it off because YOU never saw anything about it's thematic value.

Yes. Kiznaiver had forced melodrama, but somehow you missed the point that the entire point of the series was forced melodrama!

Please don't be another one of those ''Kill La Kill is female empowerment'' people. It's idiotic and way too far fetched.
The only theme that Kill La Kill covers is about the clothes and it's quickly thrown out of the way for some action.
OOooooh soo empowering, do you feel the empowerment from being forced to wear clothes you're not comfortable in and being criticized by a douchebag woman with bushy eyebrows cause you think it's uncomfortable?

Also, the entire point of the series was melodrama, not forced melodrama.
I am pretty sure they never meant for it to come across as extremely rushed, poorly scripted and sloppy. But oh well, what do I know. It has edge? Edge equals good, right?
Look at Madoka Magica for example, or Tokyo Ghoul and Guilty Crown. <--- sarcasm btw

Trigger is literally one of the best studios ever created. The continuation of Gainax-esque anime with an "on-steroids" mentality is so good. It's definitely not for everyone, but Trigger takes it's time and is good on every level to me.

i love Trigger studio and Imaishi since they do snowball effect story telling to the max, their original shows always starts with something of a small plot then later become planetary/galactic/universe changing already and their episodes seems to be full of frantic and exaggerated scenes and animation

@Azureal Female empowerment? I thought it was mostly a coming of age story about finding your own way without getting stuck in the past like Ryuuko and Satsuki are, with a splash of social commentary (something incredibly rare in anime and that you can find in Panty & Stocking too).
Throwing away its themes? Kill la Kill never does that. They're at the core of the story until the last minute of the show. You're free to dislike them or the treatment they get, but saying Kill la Kill doesn't exploit its themes isn't going to take you anywhere, unless you care to explain better.
Sure, they never take over the action, because that's not the purpose of this anime. There are tons of serious animu already, and it's nice to see something wacky AND clever once in a while, like FLCL.

Nice taste BTW
