I have been arguing with a certain someone on Youtube about the quality of RWBY and an interesting little thing came up: Is RWBY disrespectful towards anime?

In Japan, shows like Avatar The Last Airbender where completely and utterly rejected because the audience there found the shows disrespectful. And yet, RWBY has been welcomed into Japan openly and freely with having it's own manga and professional Japanese dub. So it would stand to reason that RWBY isn't disrespectful of anime right? Or has Japan been duped by RT?

What are your thoughts, especially if you live in Japan or know someone in Japan. I would really like an answer.

why would any kind of animation be disrespectful? japan doesn't have exclusive rights for the production of anime - especially since they copied from disney....

I am well aware of that. It's just some people feel like RWBY is like an anime only to make money and not for anything else, thus it does a poor job at representing anime.

I'm trying to prove them wrong.

I Have Never Seen RWBY.....I Tried To But Couldnt...The Show Doesnt Appeal To Me Much :)
Although People Seem To Like It And Praise It As Being A Western Anime,,,,It Is Still Different From Anime But When It Comes To Disrespect......I Think Yes :)

Holy fuck, disrespectful? What does anime have some kind of prestige we have to hold it up to?

"Praise glorious Nippon and their ability to animate paedophilia."

Nah, RWBY is garbage. Its about as good as the Cleveland Browns NFL team and its fanbase is as toxic as they come. Anybody who says RWBY is better than anime probably is trolling or actually hasn't seen that many anime to begin with. I guess its possible they actually believe what they're saying, but I worry about the future of this planet then!

Your claim is an assumption and nothing else because I have never brought up my standards nor have I said anything remotely close to what you are saying to me right now. I might really like Little Witch Academia, but that doesn't mean I will like RWBY just because it happens to be praised for things that anime made by Studio Trigger generally are. They are two different shows and that's a fact.

So, before you call me and idiot and all maybe you should at least make sense when replying to me.

@Harii - I can't say. I never researched this claim, but I don't grasp how its relevant. That's like saying love Mecha anime, you should love Transformers.

Apparently the person argues that RWBY was made to be like an anime just to profit off anime fans. Like how SAO profits off wish fulfillment.

Its not wrong. I'm sure when RWBY was created, they knew it'd be a potential market for anime fans. I doubt it was made to profit off them, but they obviously knew the show would cater to them.

I fail to see that person's argument really. I mean even if he right that it's(rubi) just made solely for catering anime fans there nothing to be said it was disrespect toward japanese animation just because they want nabbed some dollar from that "holy" anime market they implemented. We know many anime made for profitering itself so why it disrespect I still can't get it.

It's disrespectful in the same way that anime itself disrespects Disney animations.

I'm by no means a fan of RWBY but I don't see how a show like that could be offending anyone, at least when compared to My Life Me.

Yeah, but this isn't a Studio Trigger thread. RWBY has the common artstyle of anime, some tropes thrown in there and a couple more connections. Obviously they made it knowing there would be a heavy market for anime fans there.

RWBY is not disrespectful to anime. But insinuating it is shows great disrespect for anime, anime fans, RWBY, and anyone anywhere who has done or might want to do anything that might cater to some portion of the same people.

You might as well be claiming that fantasy anime disrespects Dungeons & Dragons.

Oie, I don't ahve anything to extend this theard's life. How about we tried to analyze why RWBY isn't considered disrespectful in Japan but Avatar and Korra were. What s it that seprates these two?

I've heard that Avatar still feels like an American cartoon to them and that they find that disrespectful. And yet RWBY has clear Western influences as well and anime itself is a descendent of western animation so what makes it different?

RWBY is not disrespectful towards anime. RWBY is simply one man’s vision of creating his own anime. The creator of the show, Monty Oum, was a fan of anime himself. From an interview in 2014 (link), he had watched several anime over the course of his life including Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell and Toppa Tengen Gurren Lagann. Another major influence to him and the show was Final Fantasy. If you watched the show, you would notice some elements of Final Fantasy are in there. Monty was clearly inspired by what he saw in anime in order to create his own.

The show itself is pretty decent though some might say it’s mediocre (by anime standards that is). However, my thoughts on the show are very respectful. I would say that RWBY is a solid Western Anime that tries to show that Anime can be made by anyone. And that anime is a medium doesn’t always have to be created in Japan to considered as such.

I am well awaare of that link's existence which is why I find it funny when a Trigger fan tries to call RWBY crap when Trigger anime are considered high quality because of many of the same reasons. It's just that many people who hate show try to say it's disrespectful towards anime.

And I do notice the FF elements. Dust is basically Materia and Yang's fighting style is very reminiscent of Tifa's to name a few.

And indicating RWBY's quality is...hard. You can eitehr judge it as a normal anime, as a new anime or as a web series which all have differing standards. But I agree: RWBY's a solid show and definitely one that has broken new ground.

I don't see how it could be disrespectful to anime in any way. If anything it's more inspired by anime. Monty Oum(the creator of RWBY) was an avid anime fan and the writers Kerry and Miles are both fans of anime, so the answer to your question is no.

Ironic considering the fact that Avatar failed was because it was viewed in the same light as a weeaboo (superficially using Japanese culture) and yet RWBY succeded.

How trustworthy is this? It's very hard for me to image that Japanese people dislike Avatar, especially since most of them don't even know the concept of "weeaboo". On top of that, Avatar draws much more inspiration from Chinese culture than Japanese (except for the artstyle).
