Really nice, well-directed episode, as always. Ryutaro Nakamura really is pretty good! (Btw: he was one of the minds behind SEL which is arguably one of the best artistic endeavours of the medium.)

Here's what I got from this. This is an episode about Kino more than almost any other ep, if you think about it. She kicks it by asking what's the meaning of the journey and life altogether, and we get some seemingly separated stories that actually have a common red thread running through each and every one of them. (Typical Kino no Tabi, I guess we've learned this much by now.) They are all about journeys and destinations.

We have the first guy travelling to atone for his sin. Then the girl travelling to forget about killing a man. Then the couple that goes on a pacifist journey against guns, which managed to survive only because the man saved them with Persuader shots unseen many times. The man is going on a journey not for the anti-gun ideal, but rather to protect her fiancee.

And then there's the Wise Man. He was subject to an experiment to erase conciousness of self thus eliminating any kind of passion or feeling. Atarassia. But clearly, just like erasing consciousness of self means that people won't kill anymore to defend or embiggen their ego, there won't be any stimulus to work anymore, simply because one ideally works to fulfill himself: why should he keep on working if he has nothing to fulfill? But there was one last trace of his former self, left in him. His unbending will to recover what he was. And when the perceived purpose of his journey proves to be void, he recovers it. There was no way to erase the ego in the first place. You can tell that also because the girl doesn't shoot the Wise Man instantly, and even decides to go on a journey herself, to forget about everything and find herself.

In my opinion, self consciousness or ego is necessary but at the same time there needs to be a balance. The ego serves it's purpose but sometimes we take it too far. We lose sight of what our heart desires because we care so much about our ego.

I think the goal is to become in tune with our inner self and become fully present in the human experience.

I really feel bad for the bodyguard in the first story. He committed a crime, did his time and became a better person for it, and was rewarded with betrayal when trying to make up for his past mistakes. That woman didn't kill an innocent man, but she did, knowingly and willingly, kill a good one. That's far worse of a crime to commit.
"Though mountains crack, and ice will thaw

Though walls will fall, to tooth and claw

Though stars will fade, and shadow spread

On the heights we stood, with iron red.

And as they died, they killed the dead.

So it seems we just got little tales here and there in this one. It as nice to finally see this master of kinos. to be fair mr dragon inside me really did a stupid move. She didn't give you instructions of where you were taking her that should of been a red flag right away.seems like the theme of these stories in this episode is some type of lie also did they just reuse the robot character model?

One of my favorite episodes of the season.

"Well now, I'm taking my trip consciously".

How we should all approach life. Awareness is the key to unlocking the shackles we impose on ourselves that keep us from living in the ever-present, ever-changing, now.

"I'm trying to live my life consciously." That's what nailed it for this episode. Kino is a self-made woman. Living live consciously is the highest achievement, spiritually. What a heroic girl!

This episode showed how cruel people can be to the homeless, and how the government can deceive people.

I really don't like the philosophy in this anime. Its way too barebones and not really thought through. Anyone that has gotten into the detailed philosophy of Barduch Spinoza would agree there was absolutely nothing wrong with the way the old man lived.

Really thought-provoking episode. I love the way it compared self-consciousness in different stories and tied them all together using the main theme of travelling.

The travelling pacifist was a nice case of ignorance is bliss, although you'd have to be really ignorant (or extremely pure and positive) to believe that you haven't met any problems that would've led to violence on your travels due to luck. I'm not criticizing her, I would feel bad for her if she ever found out the truth.

As for the Wise Man, it's almost the same thing as the pacifist. He would've lived a perfect life for himself had he not known or come to the conclusion that he had "wasted his life." My interpretation is that it's neither good nor bad. Like the post above mine, I agree that there was nothing wrong with the way he lived. Letting go of attachments is a philosophy in Buddhism and Falun Dafa (and probably others that I'm not familiar with). He lived freely for most of his life. However, believing that there is a purpose in life is an attachment to that idea, which he succumbed to in the end.

The true wise man would have known that he did not waste his live. There is no purpose in life, therefore it's pointless to cry over something he didn't have. His life was a journey in it's own way. Let go and enjoy the moment.

I like this comment :) If only he were truly wise, he wouldn't have had to suffer in the last few days of his life.

I think Kino's way of life is the best compromise between not having attachments and living "self-consciously." Too much self-consciousness (desires and attachments) can cause a lot of problems and suffering, but it's extremely hard to let go of a lot of them. Living consciously is a good way to live your life.

While very short the first two stories in this episode are dense with interesting questions.

In the first; Is it possible to atone for serious evildoing? Does genuine moral change absolve a person of previous evildoing? Is the woman hypocritical for killing a bad man turned good as she bemoans happened to her lover or is the man hypocritical for wanting to keep his life when he had offered it to her in atonement? Both? Is the country right for legally forgiving reformed evildoers and ignoring the victims of those evil acts?

In the second; Are the woman's ideals lesser because her protector does not follow them? Is he dishonoring her by breaking her ideals to protect her life when she said she would die for them? Is it admirable or monstrous to be willing to destroy endlessly for the sake of a single person? If good is done though evil, is it still good?

Why do I feel like this episode is a critique on Asian group culture?
The lack of self seems to have become a foundation of Asian culture.
Perhaps that's what this was essentially addressing, given it's China-like setting.

Given the central role in the story of the government trying to create a perfected human by force it sounds like a critique of socialism which also has a Chinese connection through the communist regime of that country.

I'm also thankful for having full control over self consciousness. There's no point in living without free will, after all

A bit too overblown with different characters for my taste, but the irony with how the old man realized he was tricked made him regain his feelings was awesome

Some other things to note on a linguistic perspective:

"true blue sky" does not mean "correct blue sky", but rather "genuine or faithful blue sky". Because "true" in combination with colors is closer to its original meaning of being "firm", "steadfast", which is also from where "tree", "tar" and German "treu" ("loyal"/"faithful") come from

Also, in German, the word-wordly translation for self-consciousness is the main word used for self-confidence. As in the more confident you are, the more are you aware of the things you can do

The first part was very evident that it was about men who ended up killing the women's husband and ended up falling in love with them and thus changed, they went from bad people to good people, implying that women change even the worst men, and there is also the part that it is impossible for someone to survive without weapons to defend themselves.
The second story is certainly a “parody” of Diogenes by Sinope, I think the criticism was that all wise men are not aware of themselves

PT-BR

The kenja tale was really good. Hypnotist was really good, playing him like a fool while actually doing the trick. Making him realize there is no such thing to his hogwash just made him realize everything lmao.

Oh wow, wow. All episodes of Kino no Tabi have their own strengths and lessons but this episode itself... really deserves to be called a masterpiece.

I like how this episode talks about life is a journey and humans need consciousness to 'stay alive' in their journey (a life), even though sometimes we do many things "unconsciously" but we still try to live a life with our self-consciousness.

Jumping around from story to story every other minute, and yet they still somehow felt more than satifactory in both length and delivery. I hope to see more of how Kino and her Master got along, as it probably played a substantial role in her current outlook and skillset.
