Would you count a manga as completed if you only read the chapters the anime didn't adapt?

Everybody does this, an anime you liked ended early (in my case it was Knights of Sidonia), and you find the chapter the anime ended at and read on from there.

But would you count that as a completed manga? I mean, you didn't read the whole thing, you just saw half the story in anime form and then read the other half in the manga.

Do you view only reading the latter half of a manga as completing it, since you've finished the story?

That is what I do. I really don't want to read something that I have already watched.

I always start manga from the beginning since they tend to tell the story differently than the anime did. I also don't rewatch so sometimes I'll read the manga because I want to see the story again without just watching the anime a second time. I wouldn't consider myself to have completed a manga if I didn't read all of it.

Yeah basically did the exact same thing. Sometimes I went back and forth between them. For example, with Fairy Tail, I read through the mediocre arcs and watched the anime for the really major arcs ( such as Grand Magic Games, Tartaros), and then after the end of Fairy Tail (2014), I just read the rest of the manga. Ez money ez life.

Well, personally I do that. If you've watched an adaptation or if you've read the manga, it's the same (if the adaptation follows the manga).

yeah. ususally. if the anime doesn't deter from the story of the manga in w/c the series is adapting.

definitely an end. there is just no sound in it...

No, I think they are different things you can not see the same vision reading manga and watching an anime, it happens to me in One Piece.

Granted I very rarely read manga I would say no. Part of the reason being if you watched a show and assumed it was a proper adaptation only to read the ending arc/section or skipped portions then it just comes off as inflating your time spent reading. In addition you're largely basing your opinion of said series off of how well the anime set up the parts you did read.
Like in my case I loved the zatch bell anime; however, they didn't adapt the full story and changed the second to last arc between the manga and anime. So even though I probably won't go back and read the full series there's no way for me to tell just how much was changed, it might have just been that one arc. So that being said I can't be sure that the story is exactly the same as much as I enjoyed it it would seem dishonest to myself to count a full series when I only read like one and a half arcs.
To me it seems like reading manga is a much faster process so it kind of adds to the "why not just read the whole thing?" mindset. Or worst case scenario you could just mark the number of chapters you did read and like put it on-hold in case you do ever decide to read the whole thing. With the tagging system you could also list the specific chapters you read.

No. Because there are things in the manga that are not included in the anime and there are also things in the anime that are not included in the manga, so for me they are two different things. If I like the anime then I will read the manga from the start, at least I will be able to see the difference and may have a different opinion about it.

Unless it's a 1:1 adaptation, then no - you didn't complete the manga if that is the case. Otherwise, sure though that's a really rare occasion.

Yes, there's no point in reading what you already watched unless you don't remember, in that case start over.

Yes, but only if the anime was faithful and rather short, 2 cours max. I myself did this when I read Pandora Hearts and once I finish Fruits Basket, I'll be setting it as complete as well even though I didn't read the first chapters. Though, in the case of long-running shounen, I do believe that I shouldn't put down that I've read all the way up until the current manga chapter, as that's kind of cheating.

This is pretty simple. Did you complete the manga? No, you just read some chapters.

True :3
You can bend the logic into anime, where you read most of the manga and started let's say watching Dressrosa Arc for One Piece or watched most of Naruto Shippuden and there after read up to the ending in the manga :3

I read from the beginning. If it happen to read some part of manga just to see what will happen after the end of the anime, then I won't add that manga to my list at all.

So basically mal is full with fake manga lists lol. I'll have that in mind the next time. Bunch of liars.
And no, it's not right to add manga to your completed list while you haven't actually read the said manga.

I always read the manga from the beginning. So no, not everybody just jumps into the middle of a manga. But if I did then, no, I wouldn't say I finished the manga. It is a completely different medium and by reading from the middle onward you are assuming that the story and events up to that point would be the same in both. Which isn't always the case.

You completed the manga, got to the end, but you didn't read the entire thing. I wish there was an option for that on MAL.
I would still start from the beginning of the manga anyway, because even disregarding skipped content, there's bound to be noticeable differences.

I think it kind of depends on how faithful the anime adaptation is. In most cases they are pretty close so I would say you're fine to mark it as completed. Also you have to consider how much time you want to spend rereading something you already watched, usually not worth it to me.

I guess so.

I personally read the whole manga though whenever I do read. It's just, I might put it off for awhile since I may find reading a bit boring up until I pass the point after the anime.

The narrative in anime and manga format can differ pretty fairly, story make evolve a slightly different way in the anime. Manga might be more serious-toned where as the anime might be more free/comedy, etc.

So I find it worthwhile personally to read the whole manga, I find interesting to spot the differences if there is any.

I've read very few manga, but the ones I have read (aside from Sidonia) I've restarted from the beginning. And I feel like that's definitely the way to go. Even right now, while I started reading Arakawa Under the Bridge after finishing the anime, I wanted to skip ahead, because it's a gag manga and it would seem unnecessary to read through and see countless jokes a second time. But I didn't, because I feel like I might miss differences or extra bits. Which would've been true. Because there are a few chapters in the early half that weren't animated.

These answers tell me that there may be quite a bit false completions on MAL, which is pretty interesting.

Yes, but I've done that with only one manga (which isn't even completed). I only started with the FT manga at the tartaros arc, because I wanted to know what happens next.

If FT will end I'll just put it in my completed.
What else should I put it to half completed?

There isn't much dedicated manga readers on MAL anyway. We're on an anime-first website after all.

I guess that the majority of the dedicated manga readers wouldn't skip part of the manga because they have already watched the anime. They're conscious that 1:1 adaptations are pretty rare, and it's not the same medium anyway ; the art is usually slightly different, the director and the mangaka usually choose to focus on different elements, the pacing isn't the same, et cætera.

The ones who skip are usually people who just want to have the "real end" of the story they begun with the anime but don't care and really appreciate manga as a medium. And MAL is full of that kind of people.

At least, that's how I interpret the situation on MAL.

I completely agree.
There is no such a this as a 100% accurate adaptation from a medium to another.
If you wanna say you "completed" the manga you should read it in it's entirety.

You can still say it's completed, and then just change the chapter count to reflect what you've read. If it's completed for you, that means you're done with it, so it may as well be completed for you.
