Why do you think japanese fans' tastes are so different for ours?

I've been wondering that for a while.
Everytime I find some polls of popular anime according to japanese fans I get surprised and dissapointed that most of the top 10s are completely different for ours and the top 1 is always some moe lolicon thing...
For example mob psycho 100 may not be the best action anime but it seems to be kinda popular with western audiences this season, it is at least in the top 10 here, well in japan it's not even in the top 20, and I can give a lot of similar examples like boku no hero academia, sankyou no terrorand overlord.

I just want to know what do you guys think about it and just to be clear I'm talking about popularity not about which series are better

Japan loves One Piece. Hail One Piece.

Not sure what you mean by "ours".

i.e.
The Video Games and Computers section on MAL houses an entirely different subset of users.

MAL isn't representative of the general Western audience.
There are [English-speaking] sects of the internet that love School Days for example despite its unfavorable reception on MAL.

Tfw when we rate anime consisting of many Japanese cultural references, jokes and parodies higher than the Japanese themselves do.

They also love attack on titan like us, of course there are some coincidences and action anime can also be sucessfull there but check some charapedia polls and you'll see the difference.

It's less about the show itself but more on the characters. That's where you will find all the discrepancies.

Yeah, Japanese people don't have a brain at ALL.

That's why they're 10+ years ahead of us in technology.

By "ours" I didn't mean just MAL, I was talking about american and latin american anime fans in general (sorry If I used the word "western" wrong)

I'm more into the spanish speaker community but latin american tastes are pretty similar to american tastes, same thing with european people. Most of my friends are into boku no hero academia right now but In japan it was like "meeh..." That's what I'm talking about, the differences between japanese tastes and basically the rest of the world

i think it's different because anime is more common in japan than in the west, means the average person doesn't go on anime sites and rates his favorite shows - the otaku on the other hand....

In reference to Boku no Hero specifically I'd imagine it's pretty standard that western audiences would favor superhero themed shows much more highly because we have such a huge focus on comic book superheroes in terms of say movies, on tv, animated or otherwise. Basically superheroes are like a staple for the US in a similar way that super robots or giant monsters are more of a Japan staple.
Also polls are kind of more miss than hit in terms of actual reception. You have to take into account that polls for both western and eastern audiences are often done by a specific site and the followers of that site so if you're noticing a trend chances are that trend is more specific to that source.
Basically I'd imagine there are as many different top 10s as there are anime related sites it's just a bad measure.
Especially considering the source material for Boku no Hero and Overlord both had fairly high sales and you were using them as example. Overlord in particular being the highest selling novel series of 2015 after the anime released as well has having fairly high blu ray/dvd sales.

Interesting story I heard says that during World War II when Germany and Japan regularly had visiting dignitaries to each others countries, one of the biggest disagreements the countries had was over the smell of each host country's food. The Germans could not stand the smell of Japanese food. It was revolting to them. On the other hand, the Japanese found the smell of Germany's fresh breads (and in particular cinnamon) equally disgusting.

I happen to like both fresh breads (especially cinnamon) and Japanese food. So, I think they were both wrong about the food (and so many other things)

My point is, maybe our tastes are just naturally different.

I KNOW japan is full of anime advertising, that doesn't mean most of them know about It, I`ve watched some vlogs of american or mexican people living in japan and all of them say that anime is not as popular there as we think it is, most of japanese people know only animes like Doraemon, Shin chan or One piece

Very very very intelligent people won't usually like any stuff and most people have the stereotype that japanese are that "very very very intelligent people"
for example someone who has studied a lot, read a lot of good books and has excelent critical thinking wouldn't say 50 shades of Grey it's a good book.

I know I'm not more intelligent than them, I expect from myself that I can like trash but since a lot of people including me sometimes think japanese are super smart we expect them to have better tastes than us.
It's just how I see things, I'm probably wrong, that's why I asked for people's opinions and some of you helped me to understand

I assure you it's very popular. Adult fans are simply more discreet about it so you wouldn't know a fan unless you saw them in a store buying anime stuff. Like they're worried how people will see them so they won't carry around bags or wear shirts with anime characters on them; hell the bookstores even prepare special book covers to hide what you're reading so you can read them in public! They offered them to me when I bought manga and light novels. I declined.

I can explain this one actually super easily... because I'm from America and yet like everything pretty much always much closer to the "Japanese" tastes.

A lot of consumers from anime are kind of "geek" consumers IMO, so they gravitate towards the kind of high flying concept stuff, like Cowboy Bebop, or just in general consume it differently. It's kind of an extreme emphasis on like "story" and stuff like that... kind of more about extremes.

Meanwhile, I think Japan is more like "nerd" so they are more likely to enjoy stuff that has like a different, unique concept, like more ambitious characters or otherwise indifferent/preference to like "fanservice" or sexual elements for ex that tend to freak out/compel more like geek consumers.

Also, should be clear, some people can have like a "Japanese" personality and not be from Japan, just so we.. er... know, anyway, the point is I've seen this trend for an extremely long time, and the short story while they both enjoy the same kinds of things, they have an "extremely" different way of viewing the same thing as well as the world and well just all kinds of things.

Basically, I'm actually never surprised if I see top 10s and stuff, because I'm always completely in alignment, it's actually the reverse, I'm always confused by MAL's etc interpretation of stuff.

i haven't seen those robots anywhere :D - also you could say that your own country is 10 years ahead because you have those "google driverless cars" (in one city) or print artificial organs in some labs.

by the way the advancement of a robot isn't determinated by how human it looks. making them look like us is actually pretty useless (ok maybe less scary for children and elderly people)

I don't understand your point.

Honestly a lot of Japan just watches live action and stuff too AFAIK which is what this Japanese lawyer told me, and for good reason a lot of it is really entertaining.

Also yeah I mean I'm not a super avid watcher but like One Piece what I've watched I found superior to pretty much all the MAL or Otaku anime of choice. AFAIK that's one of the most popular anime in Japan. It's just like Dragon Ball before it.

For the reasons as stated... OP is ridiculous concepts and silliness, comedy, etc, it's more about outrageous ideas and kind of straight living as opposed to epic, geek concept.

The only exception I have really is like Evangelion and some JRPGs which I think are pretty cool even if it's not super mainstream.

The only exception I have really is like Evangelion and some JRPGs which I think are pretty cool even if it's not super mainstream.

what i mean his most of mal think kyo ani and studos like that make mainstrem anime that they do not fact

there you go, not westernisazed = uncultured uneducated barbaric shit...

every place on earth have different culture and perspective and you most westernes is soo full of yourself that you refuse any different norm and values... it's kinda laughable when you ask every damn thing that can explained very simple, different norm and values...

anime is catered to japan viewer and never cater to rest of the world and they didn't give many fuck about us... deal with it...

surprised and dissapointed that most of the top 10s are completely different for ours and the top 1 is always some moe lolicon thing.

For example mob psycho 100 may not be the best action anime but it seems to be kinda popular with western audiences this season, it is at least in the top 10 here, well in japan it's not even in the top 20, and I can give a lot of similar examples like boku no hero academia, sankyou no terrorand overlord.

Da fuck?

I have different taste to nearly all of you... Imagine how I feel if someone generalize me with what majority of you like?

I swear, if a Japanese dude ever says "All international fans love Code Geass R2" or "All mmorpg gamers love Sword Art Online"

Why generalize when all of us don't even sign up to the same club? There's even more anime available in Japan and it's more diverse there.

We're all MALer? Oh pfftt, like everyone who frequents library are smart
