In way too many to count occasions, one girl in an anime can't cook to save her life, and makes something inedible.

I mean, they aren't 10 year old childs (even some 10 year olds can cook better). Even the most clumsy people can make simple stuff. But these characters not only isn't able to make the most simple of foods, but even creates something that makes you puke just looking at it...

And how do a lot of characters burn stuff so easily? Is it that hard to turn off or lower the fire? *shrugs*

Believe it or not there are people out there who put taco sauce on bananas and call it food.

That actually sounds fairly appealing to my stomach.

That is at least edible. Different taste but edible. You might puke eating it but some people like the taste.

But this is different in anime, they DON'T make edible stuff.

OP you are bringing back my shitty cooking PTSD and I don't appreciate that
And yes, it's hard to lower the fire if you don't cook and don't realize food can burn

Because food in real life are most probably burned if you cook them.

I don't think I understand you. If you mean some crisp, I am talking about completely burning the food in anime, like everything turns black.

I dunno man if you followed the league pro scene a few years back Dyrus almost burned down a house trying to use a microwave. Some people are legitimately that stupid.

In anime sure the trope is dumb when it's repeated constantly without bringing up something new but they only became a trope because it was funny when it was first brought up (or the japanese still think it's funny).

It's a anime cliche, it represents a clumsy character since it's a gender stereotype that all girls or women should be able to cook.

Point being, the idea of making poor quality food just might be quite prevalent IRL.

I think the Lethal Cook trope is designed to eat up 1/5 of said character's screen time.
Pretty sure the term we're all looking for here is "comic relief".

They tend to be copypastas of the same lovable side character who tries to contribute, only to be overshadowed by the protagonist's left eyebrow.

Yeah seeing as soy sauce is a common Asian ingredient, things will turn black if you add them liberally.

Also, it's not hard to burn food. My bro managed to cook burnt eggs and that's as simple as it gets.

I have a terrible Pop-Tart story. Burnt to a crisp, pure black, smoke coming from the microwave, fumes all over a public cafeteria and having to open all doors and windows. Anyone can mess up easy food.

And anime like to exaggerate stuff, so there's that.

1) The basics of bad cooking is putting the food on fire and leaving to do something else.
2) The second option is to go over your ability as you try to impress somebody with your cooking, or just trying to replicate a recipe from anime.
3) Of course, it's easy to mess up with spices and make something hard to eat.
4) Salvaging something that didn't work out right is an advanced trick. Beginners are better off just throwing the stuff away.
5) A number of girls I have met IRL claim to be unable to cook or bad at cooking.

But only anime characters can make food so bad it opens a portal to hell and attempts to take over the world.

Maybe because anime isn't the same as the real world (I'll give you a chance to gain your senses I know that can be a lot to take in) Don't get too worked up over comical gags lmao the advantage of anime as a media is that it has much much more creative freedom to do whatever the hell it wants even if what it wants is the most unrealistic thing ever.

Sns still exaggerates most of the stuff and some things are not even feasible irl, so not sure abt that. Cooking methods can sometimes help tho.

Its just the Lethal Chef trope and its played for comedy:

And sometimes its to make someone look cute

When characters put tons of effort just to make something delicious for somebody and fail over and over again its just adorable

Anime isn't based in real life, it's based in RPGs. This is what happens when someone with low cooking skill points tries to craft something that requires a higher level.

Maybe it's just that they're not bad at cooking, but anime characters have really high-standards for food?

It exists because it's endearing. You have a girl trying to showcase her skills only to be complete shit at it and a guy who finds it sweet but is considerate enough to tell the person that her cooking is serviceable.

That's because it's animated. Animation isn't edible...

But seriously, the animation medium is exaggerating all the time. That's what it's good at, that's what it's for. What else is new?
I probably regret this post by now.

There is always gonna be people who can't cook, no matter how hard they try. I knew several people like that. It's not as if it's an unrealistic character troupe

Probably because its considered cute if a girl tries sooooooooooo hard for the MC but still fails and promises to become better in her cutest voice only for you of course ;) but all jokes aside it really makes no sense. Yukiko from Persona 4 who is literally the daughter of the Inn owner can't cook shit for her life I don't really understand it either

Aww, I was going to post the same gif. You gotta be a real Pro to be able to burn corn flakes like that, I'd call that skills and Homer Simpson sure has it

Not trying to be rude here, but I think it's because of the notion that woman is generally the cook of the family, the one that does the house stuff, and girls that are skilled in this kind of stuff are prone to become good wifes...

If the japanese hold, or used to hold that belief in old Japan, this "shit cooking" trope might be a way to give the message: skill wise, she is not fit to be wife, but she still exceeds in being waifu material because of her determination to please her love, among other good qualities".
