I fkn hate it! I want there real names, not some localised crap.

Ni No Kuni did this and it was pointless as fuck since they had English names anyway like wtf!? Time Hollow as well. It aint Ethan Kairos muh fuka (rolls off the tongue well though) ,its Horou Tokio. I do like the name Ethan Kairos though. Sounds cool with the 2nd name but I still prefer the original.

Obviously its not a game breaker at all of course but it does annoy me when this happens.

I don't mind it if there is a reason for it, like in the Phoenix Wright games, but beyond that it's pointless.

It's retarded

The only changed JP game names I actually like are the Ace Attorney names but they're an exception and I still think of the characters as Japanese

In Phoenix Wright's case, both versions have puns as names, but we wouldn't understand the joke if they used the Japanese names, so they had to change the names.

I honestly don't mind if they just change names as it's that, only a name. What games do it nowadays other than Level 5 games?

Its not a big number but it is annoying when it happens. If theres a reason like in Phoenix Wright series then its all good.....I think Time Hollow has name changes for a reason too now that I think about it but stills annoying.

Some names don't make sense if left untranslated or just directly translated from Japanese, usually puns and such.

Unnecessary changes are always retarded, duuh.

E.g. every name change in FEF.

games like Dragon Quest where they work really hard to localize properly are fine. Games that do it for no real reason, on the other hand, should please burn in hell.

Yeah, like Nintendo with FEif. Tsubasa -> Subasa(god why), Harold -> Arthur(he has a fucking H on his belt!), etc.

Come on, man.

Don't you know that the H on Arthur's belt stands for ArtHur?

Only one off the top of my hand that did this was NISA with Danganronpa and Genocider Syo. The dialogue box kept saying Genocider Jack and I'm over here hearing Syo thinking dafuq they talking about?

All I ask is that if you're gonna keep dual audio or original audio, then keep the orignal names.

They actually talked about why they did that.

The original name, Syo, was supposed to invoke thoughts of a famous serial killer with the same name. NISA realized that no one knows who the heck that is in America, so they changed it to Genocide Jack, like Jack the Ripper.

I don't care, really. So long as they don't betray the original dialogue and make the character say things they didn't or wouldn't say, then it's fine.

Like you said its not a game breaker but its pretty stupid really, Japanese names are hardly the most difficult thing to say.

I kinda don't care as long as the translated name does not butcher the game, well that and I suck at pronouncing japanese names.

I hate NISAs localizations some are dub i hate them even more and some not.

I've been wondering, did the Japanese ever change names when localizing western games? Though I guess your average Japanese probably finds western names cool, being chuu2 and all.

Nope. All their localisations (at least from what I'm aware - there may be a couple exceptions) have the original names in katakana. That's not really related to Japanese people being chuuni; they just have enough exposure to the west and western culture that they don't need the change.

They do, however, run into the issue of some games lacking dual audio, or the translations being crap. I remember them complaining about Fallout 4's translation, for example.

That's exactly the way I misunterstood this topic being about. oops.

Not exactly "localising", but still … try deciphering who that is. :p
