I would say that while my opinions on feminist issues haven't changed, the feminist movement has done so many ridiculous or terrible things in recent years that I found myself in a position where I was simply unable to defend it anymore. I would say that the Shirtgate scandal was the moment when I could no longer defend modern feminism and since then I have become resentful towards it in many ways. You may recall I used to argue that instead of protesting against feminism under different labels, people should identify as feminists and attempt to direct the discussion from within. I'm now of the opinion that such a tactic will not work anymore, though I think if it had been done before things escalated as they have, perhaps they may have done. I thought then, as I do now, that most people actually share similar ideas about what equality is, and that unifying under one banner would be the best way of putting them into action. For example almost everyone agrees that men should be paid the same as women... it's just that some of them are mistaken about where the balance lies. We can't be sure if my suggestion would have worked, but I think it's fair to say that taking an opposing stance has not worked out very well either; since MRAs et al are demonised in media and most people outside of certain spheres of the internet do not have a high opinion of them. In all honesty, I resent your comment about "seeing the light" or that you think I have only suddenly become interested in facts. I was always searching for those things. If anything the fact that my stance has changed should be evidence enough that I am not, and never was, an ideological zealot. |
