Serious question. This is something I've always wondered.

What on earth does ecchi even offer? If the point of ecchi is to give the audience a boner, then they can just play eroge and get the same results, but the difference is eroge actually give you sex scenes so it doesn't leave you with feelings of disappointment that the protagonist doesn't bang the heroines.

Eroge, despite literally being hentai games, actually have very little amounts of ecchi. Outside of hentai scene CGs, there are at most 1-2 CG of girls either changing clothes, onsen scene or pantsu showing. And sometimes there are none at all. Most of the lewd stuff are found in H scenes, leaving the rest of the story free of unnecessary ecchi to distract you. Which I think is much better.

For starters, ecchi anime barely have any story compared to eroge, the difference is really really big, so that leaves us with the question, what is the point of ecchi in anime? If they just remove it, it gives them more room to focus on the story and characters.

According to my non-anime-watching-friend, it's to get fourteen year old boys to watch the show and make some easy $

Still too much work. I'd rather both hands be unoccupied.

Not really you don't, visual novels have auto-play options so you can use your hands on something else.

Not everyone wants to see sex, or is in the mood to see it all the time.

Eroge, despite literally being hentai games, actually have very little amounts of ecchi.

It just goes from 0 to 100? No foreplay or teasing? That's lame.

wat
that's not what he said, he said that there's no random ecchi during the rest of the story and only the h-scenes have anything sexual in them

What's the point? Neets. Sales.

turning a character into a sex object drives neets to buy the content. That's it.

I don't like that either. Before people have sex, they usually sexualize each other, check out each other's parts, kiss, grope, and so on. Not all ecchi is bad, and can be used in a way to show chemistry.

Note that I said RANDOM ecchi. There's a difference. You're kinda missing the point.

But what's wrong with "random" ecchi? Let's say two characters are talking, and the camera cuts to the ass or boobs of one of the characters. How is that bad? Isn't that kind of reflective of how our minds work in real life? When you see a very attractive person, don't certain thoughts and images pop into your mind?

Those can be conveyed through text.

Though this probably does actually happen in VNs, I just don't remember anything atm.

Because objectification is creepy and disgusting and malegaze is outright marketing invention to cater creepy and disgusting people?
And when such camera angles are used in actual serious moments(ex: Sinnon in SAO, every single female in ufoubw), it actually destroys the seriousness of the said moments.

No? At least for people who actually respect others and are not sexist, that's not how it goes. ITs just creepy.

Objectification can be taken to creepy and disgusting extremes, but it isn't inherently creepy and disgusting. It's normal for both sexes to sexually objectify the people they're attracted to. Female gaze also exists. Men aren't the only ones who like sex.

I don't remember any ecchi camera angles in SAO. I'm not saying it didn't have any. They just didn't stand out enough for me to notice them. And what's ufoubw?

Lol. Unless you're asexual (fine), or sexually repressed (not fine), everyone has random sexual thoughts.

There's nothing sexist or disrespectful about having sexual thoughts. Humans have sex drive, we get sexual thoughts when we see people we are attracted to. It's just a part of nature.

I'm talking about thoughts, not about actions. Staring at boobs or legs would be quite disrespectful.
