Is Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team the best Gundam Series. in my view it is the best series. The only one that comes close is the original Mobile Suit Gundam Series. Lets look at the last couple of Gundam series.

There's Gundam 00, which in my view is bad, I dropped the show. It lacks interesting characters, exciting battles(the ones in the series are short overblown, and unbelivable.). I'm beginning to think the Gundam franchise is played out.

Then there's Gundam Seed which is basically a remake of the first Mobile Suit Gundam. It was pretty good, but far from perfect. The animation, and characters were good, but the story has been done, and the battles were just over blown. I don't mind stretching my imagination but come on.

Next we have Gundam Seed Destiny which is just a remake of a remake. It's just terrible. The stories the same as the first Gundam Seed, the plots the same. Talk about stealing peoples money.

Finally we have Gundam Wing. Which was a decent show. It wasn't perfect but good. The story was actually decent, some of the characters were interesting. The biggest problem I had with the show was the animation, which wasn't that good, and again the over blown battles. The Gundam people really need to tone it down some.

What separates The 08the MS Team from the rest, and sets it higher is it's simplicity. It focuses on the characters and story rather than the Gundams and the battles. The story and characters are great, the Gundams look cool because the actually look realistic. You could see them actually being built some time in the future. Finally the battles were gritty and realistic, no over blown battle where a Gundam can destroy a entire planet, you get what I'm trying to say.

Of course this my opinion.

Yeah, I pretty much agree. I havent seen a gundam series that is better than this one. Gundam Wing was enjoyable to watch on Toonami but there were a lot of flaws and I hate how they portrayed their characters. Mostly, ruthless killers that doesnt show very much emotions. Gundam Seed was okay and Destiny was just awful with many many repeated animations and really annoying characters, aka Shinn Asuka. Gundam 00 is just terrible. Characters arent enjoyable to watch, the battles are short, and way way way toooooo boring for me.

All Gundam shows contain super mechs within a real mech environment. There's one or two things that can whipe out 50+ enemy units without even trying. 08th MS team contain real mech in the same real mech environment, there's no newtypes, there's no run and gun action. What there is are mechs who act like walking versitile tanks, small unit cohesion, and most importantly tactics.

There are good Gundams, Turn A, X Mobile Suit, but 08th is a different beast. If you liked it you might want to also check out the Votoms franchise, more real mechs in a real mech show.

I've seen the Votoms series from back in the 80s. I own the box set of the original series. It's a decent series though not on the level of the old Gundam Series or Gundam 08th.

08th MS Team is a very good series, it is as realistic as you can get with GIANT ROBOTS, I wouldn't put it above Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta and particularly Turn A though.

First of all the background plot, while portrayed well in the series, is ultimatively disposable and serves not less than a mere setup for the (cheesy?) lovestory between the two protagonists in the old Romeo and Juliet fashion, which would be the second point of critique. It is, however, impressively written and presented, the animation is great (as expected of a end '90s cel animation production) and it does have impressive directing, although I remember being discontent about the development away from the attempt of portrayal of the war and battles and tactics and background support and the camaraderie of the team, towards the lovestory. I did like the epilogue of the series though, which shows that it was the least ambiguous out of the UC parts but also the most simple and straightforward one. It does also have a much expanded view on after-war matters, which was largely ignored by many other installments.

There's also episode 10, which displays pretty much everything that's good in the series, amazingly animated fight sequences between Shiro and Norris, the writing is phenomenal, especially the last sequence where Shiro survives did make me tremble with excitement when I watched 08th MS team a few years ago.

Silly WMD was very silly though.

Well, taking out the realistic part (as said above, yes, as realistic as goes, the Gundams are portrayed more than tanks but ultimately they are still GIANT ROBOTS ;) ). Afraid in terms of characters and story it does have much on Turn A, which has only partly to do with its fixation almost solely on the lovestory in the second half but also because of some other things, e.g. the big part the mecha and warfare plays in the first half or the WMD which takes up a big part in the last few episodes.

According to your list you haven't seen Turn A Gundam yet, make sure to do so, it'll have plenty, plenty of character development and plot and it's also got a heavy '80s inspired directing and writing style, which makes it much better to digest than most modern digital stuff like SEED/Destiny. ;)

If I may quote my favourite conclusion on that epic series, by MAHQ's Chris:

If after this the Gundam franchise degenerates into nothing more than a gimmick to sell model kits, at least this series stands as a testament to what Gundam can be at its best: a human story with compelling characters.

I just finished another Gundam Series. It was Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. I gave it a 6/10, a another below average Gundam series. The only thing truly positive I can say about the series is the excellent animation, it blew me away, but that's it.

Turn A gets my vote for best Gundam.

As for 8th MS, I'd say it was pretty good, but hardly the best. On the plus side it had probably the most 'real' battles in Gundam history, great animation (specially with the remastered version available for download) and some good music.

However it really didn't have much of a plot that connected the series together as a whole, other than the romeo x juliette story. And while the characters may have been somewhat likeable, there really was no character development.

Since I've gotten recommendations for TURN A GUNDAM, I've decided to try it out. I've started to download it, it'll most likely take me about two weeks to watch. So I'll let you know when I finish.

I finished TURN A GUNDAM yesterday. I gave it a 7/10, a good series, but nothing special. Clearly not on the level of 08TH, the original Gundam Series or Gundam X. My top 3 Gundam Series, but I still enjoyed it.

I'd have to say how the hell are you Gundam 00 haters its a masterpiece of a series it has brill animation, storyline is pure class and the mechs (bar the gnx's) are a work of art. sure there has been alot of character development but hey gundam is gundam. my top 3 would be Mobile suit gundam movies 1-2-3, Gundam 00 and Zeta gundam.

I started 08th MS Team thinking it would be boring but it actually turned out to be quite dramatic. The focus, as many have pointed out, is on the characters rather than two super robots fighting. It's a different type of Gundam from the modern ones, but I wouldn't say it's the BEST Gundam (though undeniably it bests Seed, Seed Destiny, G Gundam and Gundam X...etc). I thought Wing was better.

I agree that the main problem with 08th MS Team was the Romeo and Juliet scenario - excess of it.

8th Team was one of the best I've seen till now, but Mich(a)el character really took me to give one or two minus points. He is so absolutly annoying... there wasn't much of a character development besides Shiro, who was acting nice from the beginning. But the whole just on earth thing and some good plot jumps of non important things was a nice point.

I have to say no to 08th Team being the best Gundam franchise, but it is in my top 3. For me, Zeta is #1, in the end it was the characters and the darkness of the story that sucked me in and made me sit through the story for 10 eps in a sitting if I had the time. For what it is worth though, it may have one of the best episodes ever when it comes to Shuttering Mountain part I, and the episode where he tries to save the village from the Zeon pilots, ep 8 was also an all time favorite.

I would put 08th Team a close second to Turn A Gundam, which is still my favourite.

Unfortunately, Turn A Gundam was my first introduction to the Gundam franchise and now I kind of wish I'd saved it for last.. or much later.

If you are new to the Gundam franchise then please leave Turn A Gundam till much later!

I've tried watching 0079 but it had far too much Super Roboto Fighto every episode for my liking. I did however, very much enjoy the three ZX Mobile Suite Gundam I, II and III movies much better as that concentrated much more on the story as opposed to the fighting.

Next up for me is Zeta.. then maybe Wing.

Completely mediocre. Characters, story, romance, none of it was handled well. And I fail to see how this can be called realistic with the amount of plot armor these guys are running around with.

Best Gundam series? Not even close. Probably the most overrated, though.

all the gundam series were and are good in their own different ways.
wing is good for the seriousness and dramatic battles,
zeta was good because i liked the ending (poor poor kamile)
seed was good for its slow begining, but then gets great fast
mobile suit gundam original was good because it showed a little bit of background on top of the action.

in the end, user preference matters the most

for me i have to say that my favorite overall has to be gundam 00 seasons 1+2
the series has a refreshing aspect to it that reminds me of gundam wing, i guess i like it the most because it reminds me of my childhood

I would say that you can't fully enjoy the 08th MS Team if you didn't watch at least the original Mobile Suit Gundam. In my opinion you need to know a few things about the Universal Century, Zeon etc. before watching the side stories which take place in U.C.

Like someone else posted.
You can't appreciate this series unless you know about the one year war, Zeon, Newtypes, and all that other UC Jazz.

It will have lost a lot of the appeal now that you have watched it first, before the original Gundam.

@Topic
Anyways.

The only thing that I like more then this, was the first half of Gundam SEED.
Enjoyed it far more then all those crazy newtype battles, all the Aumoro VS The World battles, ext ext

I often go back and fourth between Zeta and Turn A being the best. Because Tomino creates the most complex and realistic characters in all of Gundam. Turn A appeals to me because it's almost anti-Gundam from all levels. It's story driven instead of battle driven, which is why I get so much enjoyment out of it. The music composed by Kanno is some of the best you'll ever hear in anime. It rivals that of Cowboy Bebop in terms of music composition. So, I'll go with Turn A right now as the best of Gundam. It hits me on an emotional level like no other.

As for 08th MS Team, I believe it's an alright series with a great storyline. The portrayal of the story and emotion of the characters feel flat with me. I still got some enjoyment out of, though.

I just recently saw Gundam 00, I enjoyed it quite a bit, it took me a bit to get used to all the hd goodness but once you get over that and the fact that Tomino wasn't really involved in it you'll find its not half bad. My introduction to Gundam was Gundam Wing so thats always going to be my benchmark. So thus far 1. Gundam Wing 2. Gundam 00 I'm just about to start Turn A Gundam and then will probably look for the original Mobile Suit Gundam one with the rx78 in it ( they actually make a reference to it in Gundam 00)

And this, except for the G Gundam part. G Gundam is one of the only two Gundam series i have ever dropped. The other being Gundam X.

As for my favorites, my top three are Zeta Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam, and Stardust Memory. And, by the way Unicorn is going, it may replace one of my current top three. So far it's incredible.

Oh, and what's with everyone's obsession with Wing? It has to be the most overrated Gundam shows to date.

08th ms team was good, but the whole romeoxjuliet thing ruined it for me. in my opinion zeta is by far the best, 0083 comes in second, and the original in 3rd
00 was surprisingly good, but G, wing, and seed, in my opinion are pathetic.
im watching x right now, and im loving it. it could easily become my second favorite, i still have to watch turn A, which alot of people say is the best, so im looking foward to that.

I'm confused, Gundam Seed Destiny isn't the sequel to Gundam Seed? I think Gundam Seed is the best because it has a very good story line. I like anime with drama. Makes you feel more closer to the characters.

I find it really hard to choose which gundam is the 'best' because they all have cool parts but I feel like most of them have a lot of flaws too.

If I had to choose a favorite long gundam tv series it would be Zeta, but I think Zeta has flaws. It really didn't need to be as long as it was. I also don't think it deserves its 'dark' reputation because the only really dark parts are towards the end; everything else is pretty standard robot battles interspersed with character development. I think it is "dark" the way something like Code Geass is "dark", i.e. it is dark sometimes but only when it feels like it. However I still really liked it because Kamille was an awesome main character who I liked way better than Amuro (in the first series anyway...I actually liked Amuro better when he came back in Zeta than I did when he was the main hero). I also loved Haman the main villain (who is in my avatar now, yeyaa), because she was just badass.

The original MSG is another one that I think people treat as if it is some kind of great work of art when really it was just influential, not great in the sense of being a great story. The story was actually pretty tedious and overly drawn out, way more so than Zeta, although the compilation movies were better. The only really good thing about it was Char Aznable, but if you go into that series expecting that it will focus on him a lot, you will be very disappointed because it really doesn't except for in a couple of short arcs. Other than that he is just kind of there to give Amuro something vaguely Darth Vader-esque to shoot at. The supporting characters are just not that memorable and some are just annoying (frow bow...nuff said)

08th MS team I would say was on about the same level of Zeta, a bit lower but not as low as the original Mobile Suit Gundam. I think it started off amazing, but didn't live up to its potential. The love story could have been a lot better if they had bothered to make Aina less of an idiot/ doormat, and the plot could have been better if Aina's brother and his schemes received more focus. I did love Shiro though, mostly, and the other characters. That kid writing the letters was hilarious.

Though it isn't finished, I might prematurely say Gundam Unicorn is the best one that I have seen so far. I love everything they are doing with the plot, like focusing on the roots of the Universal Century, and with the characters, who are very likable and do not fall into the trappings of emo-land.

I really didn't like SEED and I liked 00 even less. 00 just gave me the impression that they were trying to make it as dramatic and ridiculous as humanly possible while at the same time adding in as much silliness as possible. And I hated Setsuna with a passion.

I've watched most of the gundams in the gundam franchise, with the exception of Turn A, G, and V. You can also count Crossbone gundam, but that's a manga.

Reasons:
Turn A - the gundam itself turned me off... a lot of people said it was amazing, but it's going to be hard to get me started.

G Gundam - Fighting with mainly fists turns me off. The weakest portion of a mech should be joints, so those should break first... >.<

V Gundam - I started it, watched a few episodes, couldn't take the "roundness" of the drawings and the bumblebee (or flies) enemy mechas. Dropped.

So down goes the list of other awards for the other series. These are just my personal opinion, and ratings are done rated by Gundam rank-ish.

Mobile Suit Gundam - I personally hated it, but it was the start of the franchise, the start of UC. Thus, I merely see it as a form of respect. 4/10

Zeta Gundam - A bit better overall than Original, with one of most deaths ever in Gundam franchise. 5/10

ZZ Gundam - Horrid... A group of children playing mobile suits. Worse than Original. I wonder why I didn't drop this series. Total bullshit. 2/10

Char's Counterattack - Graphics were decent, storyline was awkward, but a nice mysterious ring at the end with Char and Amuro. 6/10

08 MS Team - Realistic fighting concept. Teamwork, tactics, support, graphics of the 90s anime, overall love. Agree about the awkward ending, but prior to that was decent work. 8/10

0080 War in the Pocket - Gundam franchise in its own category. A POV of a non soldier witnessing the horrors and effects of war. I won't mind the Gundam franchise opening up more ideas such as these that are much more unique. 8/10

0083 - Another nice concept. Given the opportunity to realize the iron fist and loyalty of the trained Zeon soldiers in the UC century. An example of fine nationalism in real life, good graphics, normal fighting style. Shame the ending screwed it up. 8/10

F91 - Ehhh... A lol series in my opinion used to make money, but the graphics are up to date. Might have been nicer if I read the F90 mangas to understand more, but ya. Nothing good really comes up to mind with this OVA. Maybe the graphics will make me want to rewatch this more than the original those. 6/10

Gundam Wing - Mechas were amazing, high expectations. WOW... I felt ripped off. I remember I read someone going how Wing was the most overrated. Personally, I agree. Many people possibly enjoyed it because it was one of the first gundams out in NA, and thus it became NA mainstream of the first successful animes (outside of pokemon, sailormoon, dragonball, etc.) Overall felt it was horrible. Fighting was 1 v 50, no need to evade bullets but just tank it, characters acting way too cool that they seem like idiots, Relena doesn't help the storyline and makes me want a bullet in her head, and I've never seen more hilarious dialogue of: OMG! IT'S A GUNDAM!!! AHHHHHH!! *soldier gets killed* this must happen at least 20 times in the show. Only reason why it has points is it graphics. 5/10

Gundam Wing Endless Waltz - same lines as Gundam Wing, but least the storyline was shorter, so I felt less wasted time. The storyline itself was acceptable in the beginning. I just felt it's the weirdest thing for angel wings on a mecha, but I know there are many supporters for that for some odd reason. Everything else same comments as above. 6/10

Gundam X - the most underrated series in this franchise in my opinion. It is disliked by many as well, but i felt this series actually had a place of its own in my views. It's not an epic, but it's time well used to watch. Only complaint will be the dragging of storyline a bit, and the horrendous ending battle. I swear I sweatdropped when they reached the moon. 7/10

Gundam Seed - Some of you might kill me, but I felt this was a masterpiece. YES, I know, they took ideas from all the original old gundams and just placed a coating over it. But one thing I felt the franchise never approached was the feelings of the pilot (with the exception of Zeta) when they see themselves piloting and killing different people, fighting against friends, protecting, etc. The drama and the pain tore me humanism apart, so while the mecha storyline was not original, the drama definitely was. The ending split of the three countries also opened my eyes. The storyline also pointed out difficulties in DNA and cloning in our real world, replacing the old "newtype" theory, thus making the explanation a lot more believable than the old UC newtype charas. 10/10

Gundam Seed Destiny - YES, I know Shinn was a faggot. (Shinn fans don't kill me) YES, it was far from GS, and disappointed many of us. I felt it was overly dissed though, cause I still enjoyed it. It was not a masterpiece, but I had a good time seeing all the characters again (watching Shinn be owned, jks). It was the closest related sequel than any other series of the Gundam (you can't consider original -> zeta -> zz -> char's perfectly close). I'm just happy they decided to stop the sequel right here, or I would really start becoming disappointed and angry. 8/10

Gundam Astray - LOL. This is not an anime series, but it was one of the only mangas I read, because of my loyalty towards Seed. Personally, the entire story idea was bullshit imo with the exception of the beginning and the funny facts of Blitz's arm + Kira's rescue after the exploding of Aegis. 3/10

Gundam OO First Season - I started seeing this as another Gundam Wing. 5 overpowered gundams destroying and saving the world. I wasn't too far off. It might have been a tiny bit better than Wing with the stableness of the plot, and I enjoyed the Zeta - like ending. Otherwise, it's not one I am much excited about now that I've finished. 7/10

Gundam OO Second Season - Watch the first few episodes of this season, and I felt my rating would have been the same as first season, and it would have been sufficient (Have to love Exia repair). Watching any further merely got me more angst and frustrated with the overpoweredness and awkward storyline. Overall, I ended up cursing this season when I finished. Sorry all. 5/10

Gundam Unicorn - Watching in progress. So far so good. =)

Now I can tell you, I did not start Gundam as a NA fan, so while I realize I gave most of the recent ones higher ratings, I guess it matters more to me of the drawings than the uniqueness of the older storylines. I would just hate to rewatch the older gundams personally, now that I'm up and done with it. My rating towards Wing, Seed, and OO are also less biased than what they are because I had watched all the older gundams before I had even touched the newer ones, thus, I was not influenced by the new ideas prior to watching the older ones.

Hope everyone enjoyed my own opinion on every series. I must have typed a lot. lol.

It's funny, everyone seems to HATE Gundam 00, but I LOVED it, maybe it's just my fangirl insticts kicking in, but Gundam 00 is the reason I don't dislike mecha anymore.
So far, I've seen a bit of Seed, but it didn't draw me in like 00 did...

How can a person ever say that Gundam 00 isn't a good show? Yeah, the battles aren't action packed, but they are still interesting. The main focus on 00 isn't intense battles or action galore (like most Gundam series), it is the characters as everyday people and how they develop in a world of conflict

After finishing The 8th MS team, I can say that it'smy favorite Gundam series. At least for me, the 8th MS team, for all the realism and the way it treated the cast, is the best Gundam series period.

08th MS is good, but Gundam has always been about OP mechas fighting and changing the world.

I prefer Gundam Wing, 00 Zeta/ZZ, Char's Counterattack.

08th is more realistic than the above, but i felt there are other mecha series that portrayed a more ground to earth battle and more realistic war scenario.

Like Patlabor, Votoms etc.

And i prefer Stardust Memory than 08th MS in terms of realism. I just love space battles and 08th MS spent more on ground based battles which the series has already shown from the start.

And if you want the best, Wing is still the best for me. Followed by 00 and Zeta.

Don't get me wrong, 08th MS Team isn't a bad installment in the series by any means, but imo, it's not the best. The romance aspect didn't sit well with me at all and ended up taking a lot away from my overall enjoyment. The characters were fine, as was the story, and I thought the setting and plot were pretty good, but the romance aspect just kills so much for me. This was quite a bit more realistic than the other few Gundam things I've which I, and many others, appreciate a lot though. I really enjoyed all the battles too, some of my favorite mech gifs are from this ova, but in terms of standalone Gundam ova's, 0080 War in the Pocket takes the cake imo. I haven't seen much Gundam in general, let alone side story stuff that takes place in between/simultaneously during main UC series, but I don't know how close other ova's will get to my enjoyment of 0080.

To be honest, I think if 08th MS Team had been 24 episodes, I would've liked it a lot more and it could've been one of my favorite Gundam series. It just seemed like it was trying to do too much in terms of character development at times. It's not bad for what it is, but it's flaws prevented me from enjoying a lot of it.

I loved the squad based setting for MS 08th. I also like the gundam in 08th because it is not over power.

No, because that is highly subjective. To you, its the best, but to someone else, its mediocre or even bad.

Well, if it's the best Gundam, than I wonder whether others are pretty average. This one was good, but not exceptional and there was room for improvement. War in the Pocket was a better OVA/side story.

NO.

I found the series okay and far from bad yet I still can't make sense of those OAV's insane western (US mostly) popularity (the highly 90s chara-design could not explain it), especially when it comes to those relative scales of greatness constantly used to rip apart other Gundam/robot stories...
For other "apparented" shows (Wing, Seed, 00, Code Geass etc, ) I know the how (be it simply a timing question or something due to certain elements) but here...

@St0rmblade This must be indeed a statement pretty hard to believe, coming out straight of 0079/0080 and this.
