Whenever a girl has a high pitched chipmunk voice I get nauseous and almost have to drop the whole series if her character is important. Whenever I hear a voice like that, it feels like I'm being stabbed repeatedly in the heart! What to do?

How do you guys feel about them? Do you find it attractive? Some guys must surely do because it's so common.

I've gotten a bit more used to it but I used to really hate it. I still dislike it. I like lower voices and I think an adult or teenage woman with a voice as high-pitched as the average anime chick is very rare.

The only female voices in anime I tend to hate are those of arrogant mature women.

It doesn't bother me really. It all comes down to the personality for me, but an annoying character with a voice that sounds like they huff helium all day, definitely makes them even more annoying.

Ah well, after a few dozen of those voices you get used to it. Or simply become jaded. Pick your poison, friend.

Since I rarely watch high-school comedies, I don't hear those voices all that often. If the show is compelling enough, and there is some variety in the voicings, I can watch it. Lucky*Star, AKB0048 and The Idolm@ster are good examples. However a show like this season's Hackadoll became unwatchable by the end of the first episode even though it's by Studio Trigger.

It really depends how high I guess. I know a lot of likeable high-pitched VAs and Seiyuu, but I also know many unlikeable ones too.

Depends really. Yuno Gasai (At least her Japanese VA, I love Brina Palencia) is annoying as shit but I like Yui Ogura and Aya Uchida.

Same goes for Stephanie Sheh and Monica Rial (Although they both have a fantastic range so I prefer to hear them play more diverse characters).

To be honest I'm sort of 'picky' when it comes to high voices. I like high voices that aren't the forced screechy or nasally kind, but if it's not a naturally high voice I loathe it to the point that I've dropped animes because of it before now. I almost stopped watching Kuroshitsuji because of Lizzy as one example. Her voice gives me migraines.

It depends, in a more serious anime it can honestly kill a character for me. In others...it doesn't really matter much besides it being possibly annoying.

She has an incredibly wide range (Seriously, I can barely even hear her in Michiko) but I think higher range characters are the ones she plays the most.

I can't really blame her for 'trying too hard to sound cute' though even if it did bother me. Most actors who play those sorts of characters (Stephanie Sheh being one of them) sound more like their lower range characters in real life. But the high pitched voice that Rial uses for most of her characters is remarkably close to her speaking voice.

Her highest range certainly is high for an English VA, especially her Mio or Index, so I see what you mean there. Not your everyday Seiyuu high, but high nonetheless.

I think the same. By example, Rie Kugimiya can be insufferable when she uses her high pitched voice, Mine's voice in Akame ga Kill was also very irritating and the voice of the pig from Nanatsu no Taizai was fucking annoying. However, I like the high pitched voice of seiyuus like Chiwa Saito or Kaori Nazuka.

At the end is all a taste matter.

Generally it doesn't really bother me. If it fits the character like a young person or a loli, then it's good. It's when a character that seems to be mature has a high pitched voice that's a problem. It just feels so out of place that you just can't stop thinking about it.

It does not surprise me that you find her pitch annoying, she is voiced by Tomoko Kaneda, the queen of the high pitched voices, just look this information about her:

Her typecast is usually that of the young-child, due to her cute, young and high pitched voice. In fact, it has been reported that her voice is capable of producing sounds at a frequency beyond that of human hearing. She says in her blog's introduction, "My voice hardly changes even if I breathe in the helium gas".

She has more than 40 years btw.

Pretty much my policy. Although there are exceptions, mainly Monica Rial who uses the same voice as Index for Mirajane but still manages to make it work. But like it was said earlier what's high pitched for her isn't exactly Kugimiya, know what I mean?
