It's pretty common for female anime characters to either have no lips, only a bottom lip or really, really small unnoticeable lips. At first I thought it's because the Japanese are obsessed with the moe character design but it has recently come to my attention that in moe girl western cartoons the moe girl characters have lips.

Examples

So what's the deal with Japan not liking lips?

I think Japanese ppl just like all the focus to big on the big eyes, and little lips are more dainty and doll like or something, which in turn, can also make the eyes appear larger.

I'm not a fan of massive lips anyways.

They use lips.
It just requires effort, something most anime studios don't like to do compared to American ones kek

That's Araragi's sister right? You only really see her lips for that scene (creepy scene by the way). She generally has the typical anime design of having no lips. That's another interesting thing. Characters that generally have no visible lips for most scenes suddenly have lips for certain close up scenes like kiss scenes etc. I guess you are right it would require more effort to draw the characters with lips for every scene.

Yes because anime is a realistic portrayal of Japan and their culture and what they like and dislike and what is acceptable and unacceptable. That's why there is about 700 train rapes every day in Japan.

nah they do add lips when the character design intended it, much of the character designs today especially the moe/cute ones will look weird if they added lips

You are not getting what I'm saying. In western cartoons you see the female characters lips all the time no matter the scene but generally in anime you only see the lips for a close up kiss scene or a close up scene to make the female character look attractive.

Just remember that what you call "American moe" is made for little girls and regular Japanese moe is made for men. Shoujo manga/anime characters will often have lips. Love Live is one of the few anime when they gave the characters visible lips and it didn't look bad. In Haganai the lips were actually an important feature because only the females had lips which gave more evidence that Yukimura Kusunoki is actually a girl.

In many Japanese high schools and junior high schools students are forbidden to wear makeup so there isn't much reason to bother drawing in lips that aren't going to look that good anyway.

That would be an over exaggeration .The title is obviously just to draw attention. What I'm curious about is how lips are commonly used to project sex appeal or just general attractiveness for female characters in western cartoons yet that feature isn't prominent in anime. I'm wondering if it's influenced by difference in what is perceived as attractive or not between East and West.

Maybe Japanese people understand how bad lips on anime characters tend to look. Some artists are good at drawing lips but most suck at it so they just don't bother. No lips >>>> poorly drawn lips.

If youre talking about the guy the lower line is not the bottom of the lip it is the place where the lip meets the chin denting in and the top line is the little indent on the top of the lip so again not the lips outline.

I don't care if you're not sexually attracted to either one. I personally think that a wooden chair is more attractive than a plastic one.

What I'm trying to get across is that often lips show femininity or vanity rather than attractiveness.

None. Female lips have always been a major feature of attraction so much so that lipstick exists for the sole purpose of highlighting the lips. Overly exaggerated make up shows vanity not lips.

Probably because Japanese tend to have small lips themselves?

But I don't think it's because of that. It's become much more a trend. Maybe someone had an epiphany and thought, 'We should make characters without lips!'. And that's it.

Though the big eyes combined with fairy-white complexion combination that we see in anime has a deep-rooted rationale in Japanese culture. What I understand of it is that, after the World War 2, Japanese wanted to start a movie industry of their own as a part of rebuilding Japan and its reintegration into the World. They believed themselves not photogenic enough compared to their Western counterparts hence they took refuge in Anime/Manga. This can be observed in the lavish coloration and disproportionately huge eyes.

I have heard that but the reason I heard was that Japan was too small of a country for live action to become really big because of limitation for filming caused by the size of the country so they focused on anime. The huge eyes in anime exist because of Tezuka being influenced by Bambi and Betty Boop and incorporating the huge eye character design into anime.

Well, there a lot of rationales for that. Either all are true or none. But, this one topic at hand is pretty interesting. In all honesty though, I've only ever seen a few anime pull of the 'lip' part correctly. The rest just screw it up (*ahem* ore monogatari *ahem*).

When both lips are done (not just a bottom lip) and not done in a super over exaggerated, comical way in anime they tend to look good in my opinion.
