I've finally finished Bubblegum Crisis, and I have to say, it was great. The Knight Sabers were awesome, and the soundtrack was incredible. This is a must watch for any cyberpunk fan.

Agreed. The production values of the action scenes were great. The only anime I watched that had better animated action scenes in my opinion was Venus Wars. Too bad they never finished the OVA series though. :[

I am really liking Tomino, but I turned off the last episode of Aura Battler half way through I was so mad, and had to come back and finish it later. I am almost hesitant going through that again lol. It was a good ending though.

Xabungle and L-Gaim are happier than Dunbine haha, you might not have problems with those.

The Dunbine ending shocked me. I was really not expecting it at all.

I recently finished both season of Ashita no Joe. I had high expectations for it and they were exceeded to say the least. I really liked how it showed Joe's journey from being a homeless delinquent to one of the best boxers in the world. I was assuming it would just be about him boxing from the get- go but it was so much more than that. Everything about the show was perfect, my new favorite Dezaki series and probably in my top 5 anime.

Are the movies worth watching or are they basically just clip shows?

The movies are abridged versions of the story. I really liked the second movie actually, especially the song they included in the finale, made it all the more emotional. Might be worth watching the second movie at least.

I just finished the LOGH movie "My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars."

It was pretty good, but nothing I would call great. Because of this, I can't see myself watching that 110 episode OVA any time soon.

Natsu e no tobira from the director of Hadashi no Gen, it was quite... unique. I wasn't much of a fan of its affected and overly theatrical exposition of emotions, but the visual language was beautiful, at times striking, at times borderline experimental. The sex scene is amazing to look at, and I was a fan of the stylized duel sequence as well. Overall a satisfying view that took me by surprise.

I read the manga as well, which is considered the first or one of the first tagged shonen ai, apparently. The content is roughly the same, but I enjoyed its presentation in anime more.

The last I finished was Astroboy. Just great. It has a very theatrical style, with much boom in the background music. It is influenced by American cartoons of the first half of the twentieth century shows. But its history is much wider and developed too, of course. It has all the nuances, action, comedy, drama and a great finish.
I think one of the interesting points in the series is that it keeps their style from the beginning to the end. Mahou Tsukai Sally, for example, begins with this theatrical style but then appears the color and becomes more modern.
It's a shame i can't found it in its original language.

I just finished "Angel's Egg."

This OVA had an interesting art style and animation, but that was the only thing interesting about it. It made no sense to me at all, and watching it kinda hurt my brain.

Being a psychological/dementia Anime, I didn't think I would like it to begin with, but I gave it a chance anyway, because people keep telling me that I can't criticize something I've never seen. I'll remember to steer clear of these types of Anime from now on. They're just not for me.

I love Angel's Egg, though its definitly not for everyone. Then again, the same can be said for all of Oshii's work, who I find to be one of the most fasinating and bizzare anime directors out there. He's very much inspired by European art films, from directors such as Ignmar Bergman and Andrei Tarkovsky.

His work always leaves me thinking about specific scenes and characters long after the credits have rolled. I can natter on about the docks scene in Ghost in the Shell all day, with its interesting themes with showing another cyborg who looks similar to Motoko, meaning she's a mass produced shell, but her own individualistic traits make up her personality, which is shown effectively through showing and not telling.

Oshii has been a contrasting director for me. I always get a lot more out of his movies with more viewings, but I understand not everyone is interested in that.

I would say Angel's Egg is one of his weirdest movies, yet for whatever reason it was one of the few I've seen of his that I loved the first time through. I think the atmosphere and designs by Amano were pretty amazing.

Well said.

Are you talking about the diving scene?

For me personally I feel like Oshii assumes the viewers know the source material. So after I watched more of GITS (SAC) and Patlabor, I was able to enjoy the movies a lot more. He can be more about plot/story than characters for sure.

@Echelon

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WB-ik-Bpl0c This is the scene I'm on about. Fantastic scene, pay attention when you see the Motoko look alike and the basset hound. Oshii loves his basset hounds.

You could say that, I think that can enchance the experience in a way, especcally when you compare how Oshii portrays characters compared to the source material, Motoko is very much a sexy action heroine in the original manga, while in the Oshii version, she's a cold, calm, deep thinker which I find cool as well. I've always felt the GITS movie worked better than the Akira adaptation, which tries to put to much of the story line in 2 hours, whereas GITS focuses on 1 storyline, meaning it feels more focused and overall more satisfying.

Had a long overdue sci-fi fix again recently,

Captain Harlock SSX - Surprised to see the lower view count and ratings for this one, but I guess it's still only been fully subbed for a year or two(?) now. Hopefully more fans take note and check this one out, it was top notch and I think I even like it a little more than the 70's series. It was nice they kept Harlock's VA since he was so perfect for the role, but this one was a bit darker, Harlock himself was more involved (action wise too), and there were some usual Leiji character changes that I think actually improved the formula even more. Just wish it was longer than 22 episodes, that'd be my only "complaint" if I had one. Great stuff.

Space Battleship Yamato 2 - To be honest I like the first one, but I also didn't love it. It was sometimes a slog (maybe intentional with the story), but I can definitely appreciate its iconic and historic place in anime. However I had heard from a handful of people that season 2 was an improvement and it absolutely was in every single way, so much that I'd maybe even say this rivals some of Harlock and whatnot for me. The pacing was perfect, the art and animation improved a lot with the 4 year gap, the music was incredible, and the story had more layers to it. It also felt like this is probably the one where LOGH got its influences from, the final ~7 episodes or so were some top notch space battle action. The more 70's shows I see the more I love them, but this one definitely feels ahead of its time with a lot of density to it. Highly recommended.

Both were easy 9's!

I've heard that Harlock SSX was supposed to be roughly 44 episodes, but it suffered in the ratings due to the Gundam craze at the time, and they stopped it early at 22 episodes.

I hope Discotek licenses it. I own SSX on LD, but it's RAW, and I can't understand Japanese. I may check out the fansub if it doesn't get licensed soon.

Yeah I agree. After reading the Akira manga, the movie pretty much pales in comparison. It would be great to get a real adaptation someday.

Also not only did Oshii make the wise decision to do a single story for GitS, he improved pretty much everything about it and is more responsible for Motoko becoming the iconic character that she is than Shirow himself is. The director of SAC even said he was flat out copying him and wanted it to seem like the same thing as the movie (source).

Oshii did some great stuff, my favorite was some scenes from patlabor 2. but Akira did so much right, I am glad we got to see sooo much in the movie that was in the comics, even if it is considered bad story telling. Also one of the best soundtrack ever.

Wow, the English dub really is rare, but they at least dubbed all 52 episodes. Some user on Youtube called "Mondo World" has the majority of them uploaded.

Just finished the Ideon series, it had some really good moments, but a lot of filler. The cast of characters were great, I loved the way Deck would plop down in his seat and his puberty cracking voice.
Everyone got thier chance in the spotlight except poor Kasha. I was interested in seeing more of her aggressive-xenophobic ass fleshed out. Sheryl ended up being a very good female character, something I dont see as much of in anime I watch. Bes and Karala were great of course and Ginje too. Overall my favorite cast of good guys by Tomino.

I think I would have enjoyed the show much more if the video quality was better and a dub.
Now on to a contact and be invoked. I took a sneak peak and they both look beautiful.

I wish it was the english one, they kept the op -end of the series.I found it in greek but I wasn't very satisfied as they changed actors from episode 30,not to mention that half of episode 32 was in turkish xD Do you think I can find in english the anime ''Glass no Kamen ''?

Finished both Ideon movies.

A contact was a poor approximation to the series, but the print was beautful, I wish the series had even half the video quality.

Be invoked was great. Everything was a bit predictable, but it was well done and a good ending to the series.

So my 3rd Tomino show, I liked this one the least of the 3 I think, but it wasnt dubbed and had some video quality issues so its harder to compare.

Hokuto no Ken 2 was much better than expected. The retcons didn't really bug me too much. I still think the first season is the better one with even better characters and arcs, but all the Asura stuff and Kaioh in 2 was pretty amazing. Shachi and Hyoh were solid too. The art was insane as well, the whole thing looked like an OVA practically. TOUGH BOY! Lots of fun.

Watched the Lensman film...that was a bad idea. It's like they took the name Lensman and character names from the book then put it over a generic sci-fi plot. Having attempted to read the books I spent most of the film going 'that's not how it works at all'. So yeah, I'm biased.

It was pretty good, better than a lot of the 80s OVAs but nothing amazing. The first episode is deceiving because it's brainless hentai tentacle rape. But I was pleasantly surprised by the rest of the episodes as they ditch the hentai aspect (although there is still ecchi elements) and it becomes more of a horror series. Nice visuals and OST (Kenji Kawai).

The 90s ones are good too, I thought Yume no Kishitachi was the best episode out of them all.

I watched the Patlabor: Early Days OVA and the two subsequent movies after it.

Personally I didn't care for the OVA too much, most of the episodes felt watered-down due to the comedy which was a hit-or-miss for me, though episodes 5 to 6 were excellent in typical Oshii flavour. The movies however were superb in every aspect.

Like the ending felt rushed as hell, which is a shame. Toei did improve a LOT on their character designs in this anime, especially the females. They really did justice to Matsumoto's iconic style.
