I can't understand why people enjoy sad romance anime.

It is very difficult for me to see why someone could subject themselves to a romance anime that ends sadly and is filled with heartbreaking and tragic moments.

I have been suffering with depression for over 10 years now, and anytime I am watching a romance anime and it suddenly becomes tragic and the main character either loses the one they love, or is constantly shit on by the people they love, I just can't finish that anime.

I have been struggling so much to find a truly heart warming and happy romantic anime that really shows the joys of love, and doesn't force the heart break of it as well.

I'd say maybe the fact you've been suffering from depression for quite sometime really masks any reasonable idea why people like tragic romantic stories.

I simply enjoy getting emotionally taken in by shows, and ripped apart from every possible angle by something tragic. I'd say, for myself atleast, it's very enjoyable to go on a rollercoaster of emotions. I guess that kind of makes me a masochist, doesn't it?
Nop.

But if everything had an happy ending, it would be very boring. It would be granted that, no matter the hardships, they will always be together and live happily ever after. It would be sickening.

I love authors who have the courage to surprise us and pull the unexpected move. Also, it makes you feel compassion and sympathy for the characters. And it makes you reflect on how maybe your life is not so bad compared to the tragedies the characters are living. The very same argument you gave is a double edge sword. Won't seeing the characters finding true love, bliss and the happiness all the time like it's easy, like it's a given, make our lives feel pathetic because they are not so great as fiction? Doesn't that depress you?

I also suffer from depression since long ago. But I can tell that anime , manga, movies are just stories, they are not real, they are just characters, and I can appreciate a story simply for being interesting and not for being happy or sad.

Some good points are being made in favor of a more tragic anime. I guess the struggle lies when the anime hits to close to home. My biggest fear is to be alone, so when ever I see a character that was alone but finds happiness it cheers me up. However, when that happiness suddenly turns to sadness and the character ultimately ends up alone again it just becomes to much to deal with.

Being alone, and not just romantically is the most tragic and heartbreaking thing in my eyes. Maybe I feel this way because I have spent close to half of my life feeling completely rejected by the world. So seeing someone else, even if it is an anime character, find happiness cheers me up.

I don't want to ever watch anyone suffer from the same tragic reality that is loneliness, that I have faced. So it probably isn't that I want life to always be happy go lucky, it's more that I want to watch people share their life with someone else the good and the bad. So when the bad leaves the MC alone they can no longer share that with the people they care about and it becomes all to real for me.

Just because you're the main character, it doesn't mean you should win..... what do you mean that should only apply to action anime?

Because the real world is unfair, then should the fictional be as unfair.

Okay. But remember, the happiness of one may be the sadness of another and vice-versa. Forgetting when a character dies, take a love triangle for example: just because one character chose the "wrong" character, it might make the character we saw as deserving it (maybe only because we thought of them as MC due to screen-time and we saw more of his/her feelings) feel bad and sad, but the other two would be happy. And even if male MC ends up with female MC, the supporting character would still end alone and unhappy.

Basically, if you took the exact same story but changed the perspective, if you introduce the characters in a different order and focus more in the feelings of the character that were previously the supporting character, you'd see that the "Happy End" was an "Unhappy End" after all, even if the events of the story remained exactly the same.

Because majority of people here never experienced "love-at-first-sight", "first-love-true-love".

Many real life romances are abnormal if you know what I mean.

If anime is all about happy endings, the people here will look at it as unrealistic with angry eyes.

It's a great feeling when something makes you become emotionally invested in the characters. Sad things happening makes it easier to relate and makes you want to see them overcome their challenges and come out on top. Even if the ending is completely depressing and everyone loses, the connection you've made with the characters still means it was worth watching.

One of my favorite anime is 5CM per Second. The ending is so bittersweet, all those tears.
Shoot first, think never.

I don't know about other people, but sometimes I want to have a good cry. I may already be sad or stressed and want to release some of that through crying. So I'll stick in Grave of the Fireflies and ball like a child. Makes me feel better after though. Whether it's endorphins or just the purge of stress hormones/toxins in your system we don't know yet, but emotional crying can make you feel better.

It's said that those kind of strong feelings, of any nature, increase the level of dopamine in the brain, which leads to pleasure. That would also explain why listening to sad songs is actually, somehow, very good

I can recommend Usagi Drop if you want something heartwarming, though it's not romantic, it's about family. Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou is also a pretty lighthearted series, but is more of a comedy than a romance.

As for sad anime, I'm not sure why I like it. I've always really liked good tragedies. I'd provide examples, but those could be possible spoilers, so I'll refrain.

Aside from White Album 2, True Tears, and some other few, it's quite difficult to find romance anime that are actually capable of pushing my sadness button in the right manner and time. More often than not they tend to be over the top hammy or over the top melodramatic. Downplaying logical progressions and timing in favor of full blown tragedies to force out the viewers' tears as much as possible. As much as i put Clannad in high regard, it unfortunately falls into this.

Though such over the topness is probably what makes them even more entertaining.

I think in this case is more a matter of subjectiveness, even though I don't like to use this term I think in those situations you can only define how good is the show by how much you can relate to the story as a whole. At least that is the logic I apply when watching some drama, slice of life, romance... They are clearly made with a different goal, which is to appeal to the inner self of the viewer.

Eh, really? I think he's one of most relatable MC i've ever seen. He's neither perverted or erratic wimp that gets easily flustered with girls. He's generally subdued and act like what highschooler should do. When the girls are showing signs for him, he doesn't make more shit by pretending to not know that would stretch the entire thing for too long. He's actually willing to date one of the heroine at the start of the story. And even when his heart sways to another heroine, he actually tries to make his standing clear to both girls. In short, he behaves exactly what a normal human male should do in triangle romance.

And that's what makes him so relatable.

The only time I ever watch anything along the lines of a 'sad romance anime' is when I happen upon one unintentionally... I would never watch one knowing that it was going to be sad. I'm a little bit too emotional; a sad anime is enough to literally ruin my week. Obviously, to each their own, but sad anime with a romance gone sour, or anything considerably sad going on as a major part of the story, is something that I just can't deal with. It turns me off. Why would I want to feel cold and empty?

On another note, I enjoy sad romance anime because it helps me to learn to understand pain better so that I know how to handle it in real life. It's what I would say, part and parcel of life experiences.

its hard when something hits home no matter what form it comes in, whether its an anime, a film, a book or a song etc, but I don't know I think its just knowing someone is in that same frame of mind, and maybe has gone through the same experience!

I don't even go so far as to connect it to the real world. I'm just very drawn into fictional circumstances, and I feel emotional connections with fictional characters. People can judge that however they want, but I think it's a good thing. Well, except for the sad moments.

Really depends on how it is sad.
Most anime don't exactly start off as depressing from the get go.
They just become like that after a while.

Also depends on how long the show has been going on.
After 3-4 years of watching lets say Naruto or One Piece, when a character dies it just feels like you've lost something, because they have been with you for a while.

Some shows just manage to click with you from the get go though.

Relatable? He climbed out of a window from a 3rd story building to talk to a piano player. He made out with another girl in an airport while his girlfriend watched because "muh feelings are 2 overwhelming"

Most movie/TV shows in the West always end happily, and that is unrealistic. Sad endings are realistic, it allows someone who went through the same thing feel like they are heard, plus it allows people to cry.

Also people just enjoy the good writing and characters

Komi, Tadano-Kun, Love is Hard for an Otaku, Tanikaku, Takagi-San, Nisekoi, Shikimori, and Pet Girl at Sakurasou all have happy endings.
The right mindset when watching an anime is hoping that it will break your top 10
