I think it outweighs their fascination for latin. After Hideyoshi started to close Japanese ports to foreigner because of slavery trade issue, the Japanese almost got cut off from the European technology access, it was later on during the Meiji restoration era Japan then intensifies their intellectuals to study European technology, this time they largely adopted the Germany (Prussia) model of education and hired large number of Germany intellectuals to teach in Japan under the guise of Foreign Government advisors (oyatoi gaikokujin). In short, the adoption of Latin and Germany in Japanese pop-culture is strongly related to their historical significance in their international relationship and influences in intellectual and education culture. |
