Reader’s Choice – Favorite OVA/Movie 2014

Your OVA/Movie choice of 2014. As mentioned in the disclaimer above, the choices here were restricted to what’s been released on BD/DVD so that viewers outside of Japan have a chance of watching them and making an informed decision. It didn’t make sense to restrict such offerings to a small pool of voters this year and not have it up it for consideration in 2013, so if you wanted to vote for anything that premiered in theaters, you’ll get your chance next year.

The Top 5:
Madoka Magica the Movie – Part III: Hangyaku no Monogatari – 589 (5.38%)
Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn OVA (Episode 7) – 465 (4.25%)
Kill la Kill Special – 424 (3.87%)
Tamako Love Story – 408 (3.73%)
Kara no Kyoukai: Mirai Fukuin – 379 (3.46%)
Total Number of Votes – 10,952

Lost in Anime's Top 10 Reader's choice:

1. Hunter x Hunter 2011 9.1% (292 votes)
2. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun 6.7% (215 votes)
3. Gin no Saji 5.45% (175 votes)
4. Mushishi Zoku Shou 5.39% (173 votes)
5. Ping Pong the Animation 4.98% (160 votes)
6. Haikyuu!! 3.96% (127 votes)
7. Barakamon 3.36% (108 votes)
8. Space Dandy 3.18% (102 votes)
9. Noragami 2.77% (89 votes)
10. Tokyo Ghoul 2.15% (69 votes)
11. No Game No Life 2.09% (67 votes

I love both as they are both in my profile as favorites. But in terms of animation, HxH wins. The production values is consistently high throughout its 148 episodes while the animation of SSY is pretty dull and pedestrian on comparison. Both story were great and the execution is phenomenal, but if I will choose: the best episodes of HxH (47, 85, 116, 126, 131, 135) arguably is better than every episode of SSY. Taken from whole, HxH wins this for a mile.

It's not just animation.... SSY had more depth to it.

Who cares about animation when you have fantastic world building, OST, depth and consistency?

Also, as much as I loved HxH, I can't see it super strong as a whole while SSY is like a perfect puzzle piece put together.

It's personal preference. I just could say the same about HxH about its world building, OST, depth and consistency. Or in Mikasa's words "depth", I could say that HxH with its themes of humanity's struggle with Chimaera Ants, its underlying symbols (the rose), it's complicated yet varied power system, interspecies romance, emotionally riveting and great character development. I love SSY as anyone here, but I think in achieving consistency in entertaining me and making me think on its 148 episodes, HxH is superior.

Everything is personal preference :>

But yeah, let's just agree to disagree. I think HxH has depth as well, but not SSY's level. That's all. It has a fair share of problems, which is why it's not absolutely perfect in my eyes. And no, I don't think HxH is great at world building. In fact, that's one of the weak spots.

I agree, let's agree to disagree. One of the strengths of SSY is that I really believe that the world it presented could happen in the future. That's why I love it. It's quite different in HxH, in which the world is like us, but more adventure-y and shounen-y. If you happen to read the manga, the DC Arc is poised to create the most WTF worldbuilding I ever read.

Interestingly, I can't sing any more praises on Daiskuke Namikawa's performance as Squealer in SSY and Hisoka in HxH. Both are the opposite in the end of spectrum in terms of villainy, but the performance is phenomenal. I never connected the voices between the two! This is just to show that Namikawa-san is a great seiyuu with an awesome range.

@peeyaj:
I'm not reading the manga. I heard it updates slowly ;A;

And I actually felt more emotional over HxH overall, compared to SSY which had barely any characters that I could that I "loved". So yeah, that's a big point against SSY.

Namikawa Daisuke is fantastic. Such a good seiyuu!
